Official game day thread- Duke va Kansas

Who would you give the ball to? What would you draw up ? Please tell me ? These are freshman mistakes and over driving into traffic .
I’m trying to figure out who you all give the ball to? Proctor ? Sion ? Foster was barely in . So give it to Brown or Mal ? It’s the fifth game . I thought the play with 3 seconds left were good plays the ball simply didn’t fall.
Least we’re not the number 2 teams who got beat by two unranked teams . I mean come on .
Respect you Shey but that whole minute was ass. There’s a reason you thought the play with 3 seconds was good. Because it was a DRAWN UP PLAY. The previous minute? Absolutely nothing but hero ball

Kon is 1-16 from 3 in the two losses. Though I thought he played much better overall tonight than in the loss to the Toothless Wonders. Coop, please stop with the spin moves. And I actually liked the initial design by Jon for that play at the end. Hell, Kon's three rolled out, so it almost worked. Anyway, poor execution by the players on the floor. It's a trial by fire for this group. I think this pays dividends in March/April.
Someone on the other thread said something like "I bet Kon never shoots this bad again." I was like dude he just did last week. (I just lurk on there)

1. The guard play absolutely stinks.
2. Kon needs to set more.
3. The refs were straight up garbage.
4. Jon can't coach.

There were four no calls on Kansas in the first that were laughable. That said, I don’t think Dickinson should have been ejected though either.

It was telling that Foster wasn’t given the burn down the stretch. He has to be better.

But who brings up the ball? Who has shown outside of Kon( Tonight ) and Flag can actually set the offense and create assist ? I take it back to the play Hunter was trailing Mal badly and no defense infront of him and he was literally looking for the pass and it never came his way . My issue has and always will be , are we going to play team ball or be the Flag and Kon show ? We played self and Kansas’s game tonight .
If I have a knock on Scheyer I can truly agree with many on . It’s his lack of developing a bench every season and it’s continuing. I get big Pat but what about Evans and Harris?
Kansas’s defense was really good.

Our guard play definitely isn’t good enough. I agree that Kon should sit a little more, but so should Cooper. If we’re supposed to be a deep team, then something is wrong with them playing 37 or so minutes. Not sure I’d say the refs were garbage. They aren’t the reason we lost.
Jon isn’t helping himself with the way things have gone in the two losses. To me, that goes back to our guards and this depth we allegedly have.

There are two ways to look at this. Either may be true.
Negative: We really blew 2 winnable games. These games really affect seeding. Cooper and Kon are nice players but not break down the defense type of guys right now. We don't have a true PG. Sometimes guard by committee doesn't work. We made the same mistakes down the stretch as Kentucky. It isn't learning if you don't learn. Definition of insanity...
Positive: We are still a young team (sigh). We will be more effective down the stretch of the season. We just took the #1 team to the wire. We have more new players than they did (but not Kentucky)
Auburn looks GOOD. We better be ready for them.

Failed Test #3 on the season tonight. Onto Test #4 a week from tomorrow night when Duke welcomes Auburn to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils will continue to Learn and Grow.

Evans NEEDS to have Gillis’ minutes.

Proctor NEEDS to have the basketball in his hands throughout Crunch Time so he can make the Correct Decisions.

It doesn’t matter who brings up the ball if nothing is drawn up. I believe that kon Flagg proc and he’ll even foster can distribute if given the right play. Too bad our coach believes in hero ball though

We’ve got 4 other players to help do that. That’s when coaching comes into play.
What four other players when he is literally tied to a defender after his last three? There was a reason Kansas was letting Kon get the ball and Covering Proctor . You take away one three point threat why making another a facilitator . Allowing you simply to double team the lane .

I said it before. Coaching is bad. Failure to play Evans, Harris, and Patrick ANY MINUTES will be a doom going forward. This season and next season... Mass Exodus... plus excus minutes on Flagg, Kon, and Proctor... Kon was not good again in the first half... going forward I'd Play Kon at PG, let him initiate the offense and put shooters around the wings... something isn't working/slightly off.

Terrible last minute of basketball. Shame too because the comeback and second half was fun. Dickinson deserved to be thrown out, dudes a thug and straight up kicked brown in the head. 5 straight foul calls hurt any momentum building off of that. Kon brings a lot more than scoring to the team but I stand by what I said earlier, dude isn’t ready for the league, have to wonder if mock drafts got to him a little.

Three things- We have to figure out the guard play and Jon has to figure out how to call a game in crunch time or we will have an unfortunate end to the season.. lastly why Evans isn’t getting burn is beyond me, pat as well both have looked worthy in the time they got on the court.

Proctor has shown flashes of being very good especially his Freshman season at Duke. Foster for a good stretch showed flashes last season primarily in the neutral site games against Michigan State and Baylor and during ACC Play before he got injured last season.

I am not giving up on those guys, I know they have the talent. Foster needs to be A LOT better though. Proctor has shown up this season.

So what play would you have ran ? Nothing was working in the first , in the second we went to the two man game of Kon and Flag.
So what play would you call to be ran given the way Kansas was defending . I’m serious I actually would like to know . Not arguing if you could have ran two plays in that last minute, what would you have ran ?

Is Kansas even that good? They are solid, maybe a 1 or 2 seed. Most here, myself included, predicted a win. They did not have Hunter down the stretch. maybe Kansas felt disrespected being the underdog. There are a lot of veteran teams, Gonzaga and Houston and Auburn. These are the types of teams we will likely see in the sweet 16 or Elite Eight.
Mal had 4 points and 1 rebound. Not really ideal, although Brown played well.

I still have faith that Jon is the right guy. Bad college coaches are folks like Kenny Payne, Jeff Bzdelik, Kevin Stallings, Matt Doherty, Sidney Lowe, etc. I don't see any of that in Jon. Imagine if social media and message boards had been around in the early 80s. K wouldn't have survived it today. On a lighter note, seeing K chatting with Mr. Chow killed me.

Kentucky and Kansas are good. Both teams have a lot experience on them. Kansas starts 3 veterans in Harris, Dickinson, and Adams. I’m not using this as an excuse, but at the moment I would say Kansas is my pick to win the Big12 Regular Season.

Duke still has opportunities to strengthen the resume if they can Earn Wins against Auburn, Unc x2, and Illinois.

I get what you’re saying Shey. To keep beating the same drum, our lack of having a point guard that has some dog in him is hurting us. And hurting bad. Kansas has a point guard with some dog in him, and he opens up so many opportunities for the others.

I would have ran a play I hadn't ran all night. Self is the best college coach still coaching and he spent his timeout setting up a defense to stop the play we had been running.

If Harris and Evan’s got zero minutes against UK and Arizona, what makes you think they will get burn against the #1 team in the country? I don’t disagree they should get minutes (especially Evan’s imo) but the Kansas game is not the game to bring in two kids JS clearly doesn’t trust yet.

Anyone can look good against Woffard... what matters is can they be affective and beneficial in MEANINGFUL games. That's where Jon is failing imo... you didn't recruit these kids because they weren't any good. But not giving the chance is really crazy imo...

I like Kon, but most of us were predicting that him and Evans would split time at the 3 in the preseason. Kon is getting 100 percent of those minutes. It's either a miscalculation on Jon's part or Kon will become that player at some point this season. I just don't think Kon is a 30-35 minute guy right now. Put in Evans as a change of pace. The D will have to adjust to that. We are too predictable at the moment. I get Kansas may not be the game to do that.

Agree with that. I am with all who say they should get minutes but no way it was coming against Kansas. Hopefully we don’t turn into a 7 deep rotation…

It doesn’t matter what I would have ran. I don’t understand how this is an argument you’re trying to lead with. If you can’t tell the difference with the set play under 3 seconds with the last two turn overs you’ll always have the Duke blue glasses on.

Kon got beat on defense some too

Agreed. I think most of us agree on here that on paper Duke has 11 talented players who can contribute (if Ngongba is fully healthy). At minimum Coach Scheyer should be playing 9 guys to keep the team fresh as opposed to going the Coach Tom Thibs route.

None of us are at practices so we don’t know what goes on at practices. I think a lot of us agree that if a player or two aren’t getting it done then Coach Scheyer should look at the rest of his talent to see if they can offer some productive minutes.

Why not try to see what any combination of Evans/Harris/Ngongba (if healthy) can do with Gillis and Foster’s minutes?

A McDonald's AA, and a top 40 recruit... Freshman, Yes, but they aren't walk-ons or 200 ranked players. Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas all probably recruited them so they are good enough to play against them and at that level... seeing them against lesser schools do nothing g but make their next destination come peeking imo... Harris played really good against Woffard, how does Jon not say "Get out they and make a play"... idc who you are, give a kid to prove what they can do, or earn a permanent seat... I recall Mr Justin Robinson, playing big for use towards the last couple games of his career(Covid year I think) when given a chance... never know what fight someone has in them if you never allow them to show their efforts.

dont want Evans to transfer by any means, but if he doesn’t see minutes against Auburn and/or close games during ACC play, can’t say I’d blame him for transferring where he can play.

He is Brandon Ingram (isch). It’s not the same thing, but I compare it to Steve Kerr sitting Tatum out both times against Serbia this past summer.
