I am surprised Roy does not hire him as an assistant coach. Reading his 500 word synopsis on entry passes and spacing I never realized how little I knew about basketball. UNC players should get 3 hours of course credit for following his write ups .
Ah....the ole geometric reasoning. Problem is, he is assuming they understand geometry.I'll admit that I fell off the wagon last night and visited THR for the first time in a long time. I felt compelled.
The thread title Gary started said "Very brief stuff from Wofford" yesterday....he then proceeded to right a book. This post is pretty good.
"...and that just blew.
- Playing Wofford, Cole or no Cole, that is not a game we should have been in danger of losing. Yeah, Lord knows we did it 2 years ago, but there's still no sugar-coating a bad loss. All I can do here is offer some analysis and hope things improve.
- We only turned the ball over 11 times (not an awful number), but I swear every one of them just seemed to be a momentum killer and/or the result of a really bad play.
- Speaking of which, entry passes (or lack thereof): In addition to some poor fundamentals, there's a geometric reason we're missing too many ops. As for fundamentals, you have to get the Big the rock as soon as that free hand shows, and with the height advantage we enjoyed get it high if you're going over the top. Here's the thing --- if you as a passer delay the entry, then even when he gets it the Big will get doubled and hacked at, and you can't count on the zebra to get you to the line. As for the receiver, get your feet ready for a drop-step and go up like you mean it. Too much volleyball going on today. Bacot in particular needed to be dunking on some mofos' heads.
- If you're coming in with a bounce-pass, then the passer needs to create an entry angle. A good entry from BRob late was the only time today I saw a passer "sit down" with the bounce-pass to get it under prying hands.
- Another problem is that too many entry attempts are coming from tough angles. We're forcing these angles and not making "the pass that leads to the pass" nearly enough. In general the catalytic pass that's been missing all season is what I call the "diagonal-down" pass. When I say this I don't necessarily mean cross-court --- I mean kicking it to the corner from the elbow or the point, forcing the entire defense to move in reaction and allowing Bigs to re-post away from interference. This pass also creates a natural triangle for kick-outs --- something else we are not utilizing as we should --- and somethng that Wofford was basically daring us to do.
- Another place the diagional-down is being eschewed is on ball-reversals on the Secondary. Although KJ probably did the best job we've done all season of "changing sides" with the ball off the dribble, full reversals via the pass are still few and far between. I think I counted 6 or 7 times when we just ignored this pass when it was wide open.
- And speaking of passing, "pitching ahead" has been an issue all season. Today, when we actually did that, good things happened, but we still missed several ops to advance the ball via the pass. Moreover, rebounders shouldn't always be waiting around for the 1 to take the ball if there is a better outlet available ahead. And the pitch-ahead that's really been MIA is the one down the sideline to the corner. Again, the few times we did that, good things happened.
- Defensively, while I understood what we were trying to accomplish, our approach today allowed Wofford to put is into too many up-down switches for my liking. So, although we were able to thwart access to the 3-point line from the initial ball-handlers, it allowed way too many missed rollers, as well as late-clock open 3s off of botched recoveries from switches. Wofford's guys were prone to being flustered --- their bad shooting jags came when they were --- and I would've liked to have seen more aggressive scrambling.
- As for individual players, I'm not gonna say much other than I'm flummoxed why some of this crew insist on driving (or even cutting) to contact, as opposed to creating space. As James Tiberius Kirk said in The Wrath of Khan, "I don't believe in no-win scenarios". Welp, when you get yourself in no-man's land without a plan, that's exactly the scenario you're creating. Harris and Francis get a pass with only a few college practices under their belts, but Keeling should know better. Thing is, CK did some nice things today, but he still needs to grasp that space is your friend. Not sure where Pierce's head was today, but we sure could've used a stronger outing from our Small lineup vs a team like Wofford. BRob had a strong performance at his natural 3, and showed some alpha-dog by (as @Tarheel75 puts it) "demanding" the ball in crunch time --- something I'd like to see more of from AP, BTW.
Anyway, it was a tough day, and it sure as hell ain't gonna get any easier Wednesday. Now is the time for the guys to bull their necks and embrace the challenge ahead. All cliches notwithstanding, it really is the time for everyone --- individually and as a team --- to suck it up and step up..."

Well djay, if that qualifies as very brief, then uh.... I am shudder at a regular size would qualify as.
I about spit my damn coffee out! Hahahahaha!UNC players should get 3 hours of course credit for following his write ups .
They don’t already?
Hahahaha omg Dirt
Were Pierce and Keeling one of those grad transfers that get 2 years of eligibility because they graduated early, just like Cam Johnson??
Asking because that is huge for the rest of the ACC if those 2 guys get to suit up and play for UNC next season too.
what was that line? Something about a shadow and a light? No no, it’s, she’s not really dead if we find a way to remember her!
I know, Jerry will tell you that the Wrath Of Kahn was the better picture.
That’s it Jerry, that’s the line that ruined my life.
Unfortunately, they're just one-year rentals. The kind of players every UNC fan hates.
But staying with Pierce and Keeling....remember, these two were the 4th- and 6th-rated grad transfers in the entire country. Just remember that. I'm not saying it doesn't work with grad transfers (because it clearly has for many teams, the Heels included with Cam Johnson), but it's not a for sure. Often times there's a reason these guys are playing at 'lesser' schools.
But where would the cheaters be this year without keeling and pierce?OFC
