🚨 Official Gameday Thread- Duke vs Kentucky- champions classic 🚨

True on last two years, I would say in year one that early season injuries really screwed that teams development. When they finally got healthy we saw that 10 game win streak and the ACC Championship. (Should have been 11 in a row if not for screw job at UVA)

Last years team clearly had a shorter ceiling without Lively’s awesome rim protection.

This squad has tremendous room for growth, though I don’t see much of a post-up game as part of the equation going forward. And as others mentioned, where does Harris and Evans fit in down the road? It’s easy to play a lot of your bench when you’re up 30 on slippery rock state.

Hopefully they will work with Maluach and establish him as a back to the basket scorer. I know Lively was on campus this summer working with him.

Harris is too talented not to play. Harris is too good of a shooter not to play... 3-4 minutes a half is 6-8 a game... Give good minutes, don't get destroyed Defensively and provide good energy and teamwork and you should get this each game. With a chance of increasing PT based on your minutes on the floor... they are perimeter players, guarding the outside and wing players, stay in front of them and box out once the shot goes up. THATS PRACTICE DRILLS, surely they can do it in the game... obviously we don't want them switching to defend the post.

Spot on DBM0828, we are not at practices so we do not see what goes on. I am in agreement with you I find it hard to believe Evans and/or Harris are incapable of giving 6-8 productive minutes each game.

Evans and/or Harris have to get some minutes in at least 2 out of the 3 games against Arizona, Kansas, and/or Auburn, otherwise I see no scenario they return to Duke for their Sophomore campaigns.

If you are a highly touted incoming recruit like Evans and Harris are, you come to Duke to play in big time games.

Evans and Harris probably didn’t sign up for the Coop and Kon show. Had to have seen it coming with Coop, but Kon’s huge role so far would have prob been surprising a couple months ago to the other players I love Kon’s game, but want to see Evans and Harris more

We were all hoping for change with Jon replacing K. Unfortunately nothing much really has changed from playing time to play calling. Like others have stated, Jon better start playing Harris and Evans otherwise they'll be gone at the end of the year.

I saw a stat the other day in passing, I believe it said Jon had the second (maybe?) most wins ever for a three year ACC head Coach. Yet, I think Krzyzewski has a better record with Jon’s roster. Think about all those early season “name” matchups that K has won over all those years far more often than he lost.
Scheyer is not on the good end of that so far. So when you say we were hoping for change I know it can’t be from a W-L standpoint?

I concur with your post. For a lot of the game, teams are who they are and do what they do. It’s up to the players to make shots. Those last few min are when a coach earns his pay, and Jon came up short Tues pm

Correct. That's why I said giving our bench more playing time and play calling especially towards the end of Coach K's career.

Fair enough. Say the next 5 seasons bring 3 FFs, 3 ACC titles, dominate the rivalry, and two EEs but no title. Do you guys think our fan base would accept that? Or is it title or bust in these next five years? I'll be the first to admit that I am disappointed in the lack of national championships since '15. We've had much success since the last title, but this program and the fanbase expect NTs. And I don't disagree with that at all.
That is a Huge step up from round of 32, elite eight. I'll have what you're drinking.

Finally got a chance to watch the game and WOW did Duke leave a lot of points on the court. That's basketball, but the missed layups, missed wide open 3's, Sion and Mal going down.......

Add in UK making some really tough shots and having a couple improbable baskets go in. If the cats had 9 lives going in, they used a few to get that W.

Because of their experience, that UK team wouldn't have gotten blown out like a Calipari led team probably would have, but they sure got lucky to not lose by 10+ pts.

Oh well. Lousy 3 Pt shooting nights and a lack of adjustment to reflect it are a recipe for a loss. We are not going to shoot 17% from 3 many times this season, but when we do, we can expect a loss if we keep jacking them up.

I don't disagree with some of the negativity towards Jon. Running plays in the last few possessions seems like a much better plan than handing it to one of your highly rated freshman and hoping he makes a play. But as already stated, Duke has a long history under K of doing the exact same thing. He did it 5+ times in the Zion/Barret year including the E8 loss against MI State. I hope over time Jon develops his own coaching strategies, and I have not lost faith that he will.

End of the day, losing sucks, losing to KU sucks worse, but losing a preconference game to a ranked team is not really a big deal. I have always said, I would rather us lose these games this time of year and win them in March.
You still can avoid losing to KU; get better in the next 2 weeks. It was UK who hung the L on the devils Tuesday, not Kansas

Shooting from the outside like that in a match up versus a name program will lead to far more losses than wins. I have no doubts this team will be a much better shooting team than they have showed early on in the season. It’s very very early. Also what’s up with the cramping issues? Are these guys teenagers or 40 year olds? Before someone says “adjusting to the College game”, this isn’t 1985. These guys play all the time from tournaments to all-star events, scrimmages, etc.

With that said, not very many adjustments by Jon and the pattern follows a number of high profile opponents in the Scheyer era. Which is to compete but ultimately lose by a small margin at the end.

Will Scheyer be 0-2 vs Arizona and Kansas each when November concludes? I don’t think anyone would be shocked. He’s a great recruiter so far but I’m assuming the goal isn’t 30 lotto picks 10 years from now and 0 Final Fours. (Posting the quiet part out loud)

We’ll see. Of his three teams this one has the highest ceiling no doubt.
Otherwise known as the Calipari model

Excellent Analysis. UK's experience alone will get them 10 wins before tip - off.

I was impressed with Pope. They have an entire new team. They will improve as well and be a tough out.

I can’t agree . He’s got players with a ton of game tape . Yes they can play better as a team but there was a reason they were picked 8 in the SEC. We win more than once if this game is played ten times . I’m not knocking UK but this is only three games in to the season and over half their players have been in college 3 or plus years .

I would take 3 final fours and 2 elite eights. Tough choice but that is consistently excellent. Jon has not shown he can do either scenario, so we will see. He does get an A in recruiting, but this feels like a big year for him. Final four would be a success this year and feel like progress.

This team will win games because of their experience. Talent means a lot, but it does not take the place of experience.

Well, to be fair, this is only his third year. But it's Duke and the pressure is mounting.

I am probably overreacting to the loss. But the issue is we've seen this type of loss many times the last few years. We either beat a good team by 10 or we lose. I have no confidence in late game situations against good teams when it is close. We don't seem to have poise in those situations. Young teams make that tough. We still are a relatively young team. We will be young again next year likely. It is a lot to ask a kid who should be a senior in high school to singlehandedly beat Kentucky in the last minute. But nothing cures like winning.
BTW I hear McCain is tearing up the NBA. He just scored 34 points. Flip has 2 straight 16 point games as well.
