Coach K Stat-Tracker

If Duke wins out, for K to win number 1000, he will have to earn it at Louisville against Rick Pitino. There's a storyline right there!

Showing the effects of a long exam layoff, the #2 ranked Blue Devils had enough in them to secure Coach K's victory #992 with a victory over Elon by the score of 75-62. Jahlil Okafor celebrated his 19th birthday in style as he achieved his second double-double of his short career with 25 points and 20 rebounds. The feisty Phoenix team hung around for most of the game, but the Blue Devils were just too much for them. Now it is on to East Rutherford, New Jersey and a battle with defending national champs, the UConn Huskies. Hopefully Duke will be better prepared for this game. Should be a good one. OFC

After a somewhat sluggish first half and a piss poor start to the second half, the Duke Blue Devils went on to capture win #993 in the Hall of Fame career of Coach K with a 66-56 win over the UConn Huskies. Not the prettiest of games, but the steady play of Amile Jefferson and Tyus Jones led the way for the #2 ranked Devils. Getting ever closer to that magic win #1,000. OFC

Showing the rust from yet another long layoff, the Duke Blue Devils had enough in the tank to take down Toledo tonight 86-69 for Coach K's 994th victory in his great career. Thank God that Jahlil did not leave his game in the locker room as he was by far the difference in the game. Another great performance with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Cook and T. Jones played well also, and Amile had his normal steady game. Next up the crowd from Wofford, who took down NC State not too long ago. Hopefully Duke will be back on track for this game. OFC

With freshman Jahlil Okafor leading the way once again, the Duke Blue Devils won their opening conference game of the ACC season with an 85-62 win over Boston College. Remaining undefeated on the season, Duke captured their 13th win of the year and gave Coach K his 996th career victory. The week ahead is a tough one, with road games against Big Four rivals Wake Forest and NC State. It will be new territory for the Duke freshmen. OFC

Duke beats Wake Forest 73-65 for Coach K's 997th victory. That is all I have to say. OFC

Career victory #998 is secured for Coach K with a 63-52 win over Louisville. Duke won in unusual fashion, employing a zone defense against the poor shooting Cardinals. Okafor continued his fine play and Jefferson remains a major cog on the Duke team. Poor Justise Winslow has hit a wall of bricks and they have fell back on him. He needs to get on track as Duke has a tough stretch of games coming up. Great victory after two discouraging losses. OFC PS...to all the doubters, the crow will be served shortly.

The number 999 has a nice ring to it for Coach K. He notches that victory total with a 79-65 win over Pitt. Did not get to see the first half, but the end of the game stall ball was horrible. Duke has to get better at that. Tyus found his shooting touch, but Winslow remains in a funk. Now it is on to Madison Square Garden and hopefully win #1000 for K. OFC

HERE IT COMES BABY ! !

It is in the books! Victory #1000 for Coach K is now enshrined in sports history. Duke comes back from 10 points down to St. John's and earns a hard fought 77-68 win. The boys never gave up, and the new military guy gave them the boost to get them going. Great job by Marshall. Tyus Jones showed why he was the considered the best point guard coming in this year. The entire team did what they had to do to take this one. Congratulations Coach K, and here is hoping you put many, many more victories in the books. OFC

I know Coach 1K has his 1000th victory in his possession, but victory #1001 was, as the late, great Jackie Gleason would say," How sweet it is"! This game was for all the Duke haters and so called Duke supporters who had no faith in Coach 1K and the Duke team. Jay Bilas had UVA as the best team in the universe, and all of the sudden, the boys from Durham came alive. All of the team contributed, even the number 8 man Allen. What a win my friends, and for all you doubters, this one is for you. Final score: Duke 69, the previously undefeated UVA Cavaliers, 63. O- Old F- Farts C - Club.

In a game that honestly Duke should have lost, the Blue Devils hold on to defeat the last place Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech, 72-66, for Coach 1K's number 1002 victory. Coach 1K also passed Dean Smith with his 423rd ACC victory. Congratulations to him on that feat. As for the game, Duke just could never really get on track, as they basically played the game is spurts. It is obvious that Coach 1K should consider using the zone for the majority of the time, since not one player has really shown that they have learned to play the defense the way 1K wants it to be played. Justice is back, thankfully. Matt Jones had a good game. Next the Blue Devils have the ND Irishmen at Cameron. Hopefully the boys will perform a little better, and the Cameron Crazies come to life. They were pitiful tonight. OFC

Number 1003 goes into the Coach 1K column via an overwhelming 90-60 victory over the Irishmen of Notre Dame. This one was over early and the entire team played great. Justice is surely back to his early season form and all other players have enhanced their roles. Looked like the Blue Devils of old on the court, and the Crazies did a whole lot better today. Maybe they have been reading our posts. Great victory to atone for the lose at ND. OFC

In a see-saw game from start to finish, the Blue Devils had just enough to hold off Florida State by the score of 73-70 for Coach 1K's career victory #1004. Shots were not falling early, but Duke climbed back to take 8 point half time lead. Florida State made a great run in the last four minutes to leave the game in doubt until the final whistle. Quinn Cook led the Devils with 26 points, while Plumlee played well for Okafor as he was in four trouble early. All in all, a good win on the road, setting up game with Syracuse on Saturday. OFC

Heyman, thanks for keeping up with this man! I love your quick breakdown of each win and the game itself. Awesome work man!

Anytime Heyman. It is a labor of love that we all share with you buddy!

In what can best be described as a slug fest, the Duke Blue Devils gave Coach 1K his 1005th career victory with an 80-72 win over Syracuse. After a somewhat slow start in the first half, and tremendous shooting by Mike Gbinije (ex-Duke), the Devils got their act together and put the Orange Men where they belong. Okafor fought off the football like tactics of Syracuse and torched them for 23 points, while adding 13 rebounds. Tip of the hat to sub Matt Jones, who appeared to change things around once he got involved in the game. Now the Scar Heels come into Cameron Indoor on Wednesday for the best college basketball rivalry in the NCAA. GTHC, GTH!!!! OFC

One thousand and six, one thousand and six, one thousand and six. Say this number real slow and savor the sound of the new career victory total for Coach 1K after an amazing overtime thrilling win over arch rival UNC by the score of 92-90. In a game that saw the Blue Devils jump out to a big lead, then UNC coming back to cut the margin, then Duke going up by 13 points and Carolina scoring the last six points to cut the halftime lead to seven. Okafor turns his ankle and scares all 9,314 in attendance (at least all the Duke fans). He comes back before the half is over and all seems well. But, giving the Heels their due props, the game took a sudden turn when all of the sudden Duke could not stop anything inside. UNC proceeds to take a ten point lead, and with less than two minutes to go (1:48 I think), they are up by seven. Things are looking bleak for the devils, then we have the Tyus Jones show! He seemed to just take the Devils on his back and willed them into overtime. In overtime the Heels go up by three, but Tyus and the Devils are not going to leave Cameron on a sad note. Duke does what is needed to secure one of the greatest games in the history of this storied rivalry.

As noted, Tyus played great, Quinn did a whole lot of damage with his dagger threes, plus some great defense on Marcus Paige. Okafor had 13 rebounds, Winslow had his normal game and Jefferson came to play. All the subs, especially Matt Jones, did their part in this team victory. Great pre-game moment of silence honoring Coach Dean Smith, which was only fitting. The Devils welcome Clemson next on Saturday, hopefully with Okafor in good shape. And I end with this, "GTHC, GTH"! OFC

Playing without the best big man in the country, the Duke Blue Devils went small and played zone in defeating the Clemson Tigers 78-56 for Coach 1K's 1007th win as a head coach. Jahlil Okafor did not dress as a result of an ankle injury suffered last Wednesday night against UNC, but you would never tell the Blue Devils missed him as they hit on all cylinders in their gutsy, well earned victory. Justice Winslow and Quinn Cook were the leaders, but all players did their part. Grayson Allen had a great game off the bench as he scored 10 points and had a very good floor game. It is great to see him contribute as he will be needed down the stretch. Great win, the crazies were fantastic and now it is on to Va Tech for a Wednesday night game with the Hokies. Go Duke! OFC

Coach Mike Krzyzewski's 1008th career victory was not a thing of beauty, but it goes into the record books none the less, with a hard fought 91-86 overtime win over Virginia Tech. Duke's saving grace was the fact that they shot almost 60% from the field for the game, plus they have Quinn Cook and Jahlil Okafor on their roster. Quinn was the big difference in the spurts the Blue Devils got during the game, and Jahlil's presence made it easier for his teammates to get some good looks. Best way to describe the defense was in one word, horrible, as Va Tech made more three pointers (12) than any team they have faced this year. On most of those attempts, Duke was completely out of place with their defense. Win and survive is the motto this crowd uses for sure, and they proved it tonight. Next up, Syracuse comes to Cameron Indoor on Saturday and the place should be rocking. OFC

Getting back to playing some good Duke defense, the Blues Devils gave Coach 1K his 1009th career basketball victory with a 73-54 win over Syracuse. In Duke's ninth straight win Justice Winslow led the way with a career high 23 points and 9 rebounds, seeming to be all over the court. Jahlil Okafor had another double-double (13 points and 14 rebounds), while Quinn Cook added 17 points (which included making an ACC best three-point shot for the 39th straight game). Matt Jones played well on both ends of the court with his shooting improving each and every game. Next up for the Blue Devils is the Wake Forest Demon Deacons who come to Cameron on Wednesday for the last home game for Duke, and the last time senior Quinn Cook will ever suit up for a home game. OFC

Something tells me Quinn's last game in Cameron will be a winner.

Victory #1010 for Coach 1K was put into the books last night as the Blue Devils tuned up for UNC with a 94-51 drubbing of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The game was never in doubt as Duke came out hustling all over the court and WF never knew what hit them, being down 52-15 at halftime. Grayson Allen showed what he could do when given some playing time by leading the Devils with 27 points. Winslow had his normal great game, while Matt Jones gave Duke a huge spark scoring wise in the second half. Senior Quinn Cook scored 13 points after a slow start, while hitting a league leading 3-pointer for the 40th straight game in his last game at Cameron. Okafor had an off night with only six points, but luckily he was not really needed to beat the hapless Deacs. Now it is on the Chapel Hill and the annual season ending game with the Scar Heels. Here is hoping the Blue Devils come out with the same intensity that they showed last night. GTHC, GTH! OFC

Wow, what to say? The 2014-2015 edition of the Duke Blue Devils end the season with an impressive win over arch-rival UNC with a thrilling 84-77 victory, placing career victory #1011 into Coach 1K's win column. With all the press that Okafor, Cook and Winslow have been getting this year, it has come to light that Tyus Jones is the man that truly makes the Devils click. Scoring a season high 24 points and dishing out 7 assists, Tyus was a true pain in the butt for the Heels all night. Cook finished with an overall 3-1 record in the Dean Dome while adding 20 points, including his 41st straight game with a made three-pointer. Okafor's presence opened things up for Duke, but he also added 14 points for the night. Winslow had his normal all-over-the-court game, but showed he was a true freshman with both a kicking and tripping foul called against him. This was basically uncalled for and I hope Coach 1K will address that matter with him. UNC honored the G.O.A.T. before the game for his 1000th career victory, a classy move by the Heels. Proves you can have respect while also not really caring for your rival. Now it is on to the ACC tournament next week and it is a great time to be a Blue Devil! OFC

PS...I must report that another banner is now hanging in the Dean Dome:

Thanks bleed. I am fully prepared for nine more write ups, and that is a darn good looking banner! OFC

In a game that was over before the first four minute time out, the Duke Blue Devils took care of the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the opening game of the 2015 ACC Tournament with a convincing 77-53 thumping of the Pack. This was the 1012th victory for Coach 1K. Duke had six players in double figures, led by senior Quinn Cook with 15, while Lt. Marshall Plumlee had a career high with 12 points, all on lob dunks. Cook also hit a three-pointer for the 42nd game in a row. Now it is on to the semi-final round against Notre Dame, who will be out for blood after the beat down the Devils put on them earlier in the year at Cameron. Just love March basketball! OFC

With a team loaded with freshmen who have never played a NCAA tournament game, the Duke Blue Devils accomplished several things last night with their 85-56 victory over Robert Morris University First of all, they gave their coach his 1013th career victory. They also won the 100th game for Duke in NCAA tournament play, placing them third in all-time victories. And, not to be forgotten, they won the opening game of the 2015 tournament which puts them into the field of 32 remaining teams. Duke was led by senior Quinn Cook, who scored 22 points and extended his Duke record of hitting a three-pointer to 43 games. Jahlil Okafor added 20 points in limited action, while Justice Winslow provided the spark when Robert Morris closed the gap to ten points midway of the second half. Amile Jefferson and Marshall Plumlee also gave great efforts off the bench, something that will be needed if the Blue Devils want to advance. All in all a good, well rounded effort for the Devils, who now face San Diego State on Sunday. OFC

Duke advances to the Sweet Sixteen by defeating San Diego State University on Sunday afternoon by the score of 68-49. This win gives Coack 1K his 1014th career victory and gives Duke 101 wins in NCAA tournament play, third all-time. The Blue Devils were led by Jahlil Okafor, who dominated the Aztecs for 26 points. Senior Quinn Cook added 15 points in a steady game. The player who was all over the court was Justice Winslow, as he contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds, plus the best block of the game. Great game overall by the Blue Devils and now it is on Houston and the next game against Utah. Two down and four to go! OFC

Elite Eight baby, that is what I am talking about! Great job by Duke last night in capturing career victory #1015 for Coach 1K while defeating Utah by the score of 63-57. Utah was determined to not let Okafor beat them, and it was a good plan. What they did not plan on was hometown and birthday boy Justise Winslow going off on them. Justise had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Devils, while Tyus Jones added 15 points, most coming on free throws at the most crucial times of the game. Senior Quinn Cook scored 11 points, while having his consecutive streak of three-pointers stopped. Okafor only scored 6 points but added 8 rebounds as he was hounded all night. This was the 102nd win in the NCAA tournaments for Duke. Now it is on to Sunday and a game with Gonzaga and the right to go to the Final Four! OFC

On to the Final Four! Duke takes care of business and defeats Gonzaga by the score of 66-52. The Blue Devils upped their defense and shut the Zags down at the end of the game for the last six minutes or so. This win placed victory #1016 into Coach 1K's column, plus securing the 103rd win in Duke's NCAA history. Coach 1K advances to his 12th final four, tying the legendary John Wooden for most all time. Justise Winslow came up big again with 16 points, while Matt Jones came to the rescue with 16 points also. Matt was all over the court and was a vital part in this victory. Most Valuable Player of the South Region Tyus Jones added 15 points and 6 assists. Senior Quinn Cook also scored in double figures with 10 to make it to his first final four. Okafor had an off game once again, but I am confident he will break out in the next game for the Devils. Now it is on to the Final Four and a rematch with Michigan State, who Duke defeated earlier in the year. OFC

NCAA Championship Game! This has been Duke's goal the entire season, and now it is here. The Blue Devils rode the talents of their talented four freshman to defeat Michigan State by the score of 81-61. After four minutes, the Spartans held an eight point lead, but after that it was all Duke. Coach 1K earned career coaching victory #1017, while the Blue Devils won their 104th win in NCAA tournament history. The Devils were led once again by Justise Winslow with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Jahlil Okafor ended a two game funk while adding 18 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Quinn Cook added 17 points in making it to his first championship game. Tyus Jones had his normal great floor game, while Duke's sort of "unknown" freshman Grayson Allen provided some spark with 9 points, and the best dunk of the night. Matt Jones, Amile Jefferson (7 rebounds) and Marshall Plumlee all contributed as well. Now Coach 1K goes to his ninth NCAA Championship Game with a chance to secure his fifth national title. It will not be easy as the Blue Devils face a Wisconsin team that gave Kentucky its first loss of the season. Duke defeated the Badgers earlier in the season, but you can throw that out the window as this one is for all the marbles!
