When will Duke Basketball retire another jersey?

With the current landscape of college basketball and the early entries into the NBA draft... when do you think Duke Basketball will retire another jersey?

I did a article on this at DR (link below) but I'm curious on your opinions. Will it happen in the next 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, never?

Never imo with the way things are going. wouldn't mind seeing tyus's get retired i don't care what the requirements were... that kid was one of the most clutch players in basketball I've ever seen

And just think, his clutchness pales in comparison to Laettner. But truthfully, there's 25+ players more deserving than Tyus....and that's not a slight on him.

It's an interesting topic though, skeelow. I think we all know to never say never, but admittedly it's something that's hard to picture in college basketball's current landscape....specifically at a school like Duke.

It's gonna be a while unless they change the requirements. This topic seems to come up at least a couple of times a year. You just can't retire a number because you think he should be retired because we wouldn't have any numbers left. Example for me. I loved Gene Banks, Bob Verga, Kyle Singler ,Jim Spanarkel, Mike Lewis, Randy Denton and Tate Armstrong and I say let's run them up. Who else needs their jersey up there. Wojo, Langdon Vancedek, Schyer, Nolan Smith? How about Quinn Cook? How about this suggestion and neither I or anyone else here could make this happen. Why not take a section that runs along both the home and visitor sides and just put up deserving names and numbers .and keep the criteria for retired numbers to be the same. OFC

10-20 years maybe. Singler and Smith were really close to getting their jerseys retired and they didn't play that long ago. I like the high standards for jersey retirement, makes it even more special when it's harder to achieve and whoever the next is to get their jersey retired we'll have a great deal of appreciation for that accomplishment.

With the 'NBA' rule as it is it doesn't look likely that anyone talented enough will stay long enough to accomplish getting a jersey in the rafters. A few more championships would help ease the pain for me.

We need to start insisting that big men wear numbers in the 50s. We can't have post players retiring #s 1, 5, 14, 15, 21. That will lead to guards wearing 52, and that's just wrong.

It's interesting that the Wojo won National Defensive Player of the year honors in 1998 but his jersey wasn't retired. I know his teams didn't win a national championship but neither did 8 of the other players who have their jerseys retired.

Wojo was a great defender, but we can't retire numbers just because a player is great something. If memory serves, he didn't even score 1,000 career points.

That is just one of the requirements that he hit though- and it wasn't National POY, but DPOY....still quite an accomplishment. However i would put him well down the list of players i'd consider before Wojo, and i loved wojo.

Scheyer
Singler
Smith
Brand (will happen if he finishes his degree)
Langdon
Carrawell

All of these guys hit some requirements but not all. Which is tough. Singler to me would probably be the guy I would say, while he didn't win any national POY honors just sits so high up on our scoring, rebounding etc. lists tough not to include him. was also the Final Four MOP.

Anyone saying Tyus needs to have their head examined, and i absolutely LOVE TYUS....he'd agree with me too.

With the standards that Duke has when it comes to jersey retirement, it might be awhile before anyone else gets up there.As Boogie said above, the closest thing is Elton Brand, should he decide to finish his degree now that he is retired. He meets all other requirements.

Nowadays, if you are a NPOY-caliber guy, you probably won't be in school long enough to graduate. This past year's NPOY was an interesting case study though. Kaminsky came in lightly regarded and spent four years developing into a lottery pick. That sort of thing is less likely at Duke because they recruit such elite players.

It's hard to get into the rafters of Cameron, as it should be. Probably more than a few players that haven't had their jerseys retired at Duke would have them swinging at programs that haven't had the success of Duke basketball.

The honored jerseys of our rival UNC is an excellent idea I think. It allows an opportunity to show appreciation for excellent players that didn't quite make it to legendary status.

Singler is certainly as close to it as any player in the K era along with Brand. (Bilas has been a strong advocate for Alarie btw) I truly believe that Kyle was very close to achieving that honor, like some of you have said a Final Four MOP is incredibly special and rare. Plus all the stats he achieved in points and so on. I think the problem was his senior year, remember mid-season when he completely lost his shooting touch and endured quite a long shooting slump? (during that stretch Duke blew a critical game for the regular season crown up at VA Tech and then just played completely flat in Chapel Hill, allowing the Heels to finish first. Though Duke destroyed Carolina for the real ACC Championship the following week) I think that really put a damper on his chances. He was solid as always but not "special" as a senior and he went out with a thud in the NCAA'S though he did play well vs Arizona.

Compare that senior year with his junior year. ACC Tourney MOP, Final Four MOP, had that amazing game where he hit 8 3-pointers vs Ga Tech. He had many special moments as a junior but not as many in his senior season.

It just speaks to the game today. Duke's first three title teams each featured multiple guys who went on to get their jerseys retired. As it stands now, the two most recent title teams won't have any jersey retirees.

How in the world is letting somebody like Singler in lowering the standard? Did you the stats posted in his favor? Come on man.

That guy took a beating every night just to will us to victory. He was truly special. Started every game. number 12.

Wojo's resume was pretty blank besides the defensive accolades.

This ^. So many great Duke players, this discussion could go on forever. We need to be proud of those that are in the rafters (and the standard that has been set to get there), but also just always remember those that did not make it, and the joy that they have given us over the years.
Some of my all time favorite Duke players are not in the rafters, but it sure doesn't lessen how I feel about them.
