Transfer Portal

Hurley is the best coach in the country right now there is no denying that.

I disagree with whomever said Hurley lost the majority of his team from the 22-23 season and repeated with a completely new roster, that is simply not true. UConn lost Jackson, Sanogo, and their stud player after the 22-23 title. They still returned the core guys of Newton, Karaban, Clinigan they defend the 23-24 title along with adding Spencer, the big who replaced Karraban & Clinigan off the bench, and the one and done freshman.

Mr Scary is right in that UConn is losing all 6 of those guys this off season.
I don’t think they win it next year with new team. All players don’t buy in I don't care how good of a coach Hurley is. They will be in the hunt

Sion James may not necessarily start, but I do think he'd get at least 20 minutes a night. He's a great defender, a good secondary playmaker, and he's in the 96th percentile on spot up jumpers. Much more prepared to contribute than most of the freshmen. - and will likely have a bigger impact than the other two transfers.
Scheyer himself came off the bench as a soph and averaged 28mpg, 3rd on the team. As much as many of us (and apparently Scheyer, too) want to play bigger than a 3-guard lineup next year, having that option is pretty much a necessity for any team that wants to compete for a title.

If we get the Tulane guy, and hints are suggesting we did(Duke IG just followed him, a good sign), we have a complete team that has as good a shot as anyone. Experienced tough transfers in the frontcourt, wing and backcourt. Plus talented freshman. (I like freshman I just think they are hit and miss) Jon will have made some hard choices and assembled a team without a glaring hole. Only challenge is fitting those pieces together, but Proctor can help with that.
Yea. For sure. Sion is exactly what Duke needs. Fifth year senior. 6’6, 220. Can shoot the 3. Rebound. And will bring that mature physicality Duke has not had.

Many of the losses the past two seasons have been to older teams with physicality who just beat us down.

We have good depth. Now we just need Jon to work these kids hard to get them strong and then to play 8-9 deep in some real, competitive games and get them acclimated so we have depth beyond 6-7 players.

I’ve been thinking about this and wanted to get someone’s thoughts. Flagg is getting a lot of hype. Do yall foresee the media villainizing Flagg? I thought flip might get that treatment but did not.

I kind of doubt it. Flagg seems to be well liked. And doesn’t appear to have that in your face mentality like JJ did. Plus it usually grows over time and great players aren’t staying at Duke long enough to be hated. As it is, people will see Flagg once - twice if they see him in the tourney - not 4 times plus the ACCT like they did JJ.

Also feels like a different culture in sports and CBB. Fans in general are softer. The offense police are always on the prowl. Used to be Duke fans just crushed opponents. Duke and Maryland. Of course with so many players in the portal every year, every team except a few look entirely different every year. I don’t know half the players at the start of the year each year.

Except for the few that know they can’t handle the NBA so make a career out of playing at UNC. 😉

I just find it hard to believe Jon will be able to juggle all this talent, and keep everyone happy. If you think it can happen, you haven't been a fan for long.

But then again, college sports are upside down. Maybe there's a first time for everything.
I just think it’s going to be hard to keep Knup and Harris on the bench . Yes, they will probably be last off the bench but they will get minutes .
A 4 year starter from Tulane is going to transfer for year 5 at Duke and be ok sitting on the bench ?

If he comes and accepts that role that’s awesome I hope he does but it doesn’t make sense to me
All above are legit concerns from three of our best posters. We've got really talented individuals, and Jon is going to need a viable plan for proper chemistry and PT distribution.

Duke has never used a Leonard Hamilton approach (I AM GLAD) of a 5pm rush hour at the scorers table. He's pretty much followed the K approach to this point.

Will a Kneupper/Harris be happy with a token first half appearance, and 2nd half splinters? I think NOT. These are really good players.(I am merely using these two,as someone will get the pine.)

I will say however, I truly think a legit 3rd guard was needed, and I will be happy to see James in the TRUE BLUE and WHITE. John must develop a fairly harmonious rotation though. Can it be done??

Agreed. I think all of the above posts on the concerns over how Jon uses the bench are legit.

The interesting thing is that the first two decades at Duke, Coach K used a deeper bench than he did the last two decades. For example, the 88-89 season saw 8 players average 15+ minutes game and the 9th, Brian Davis, averaged 8.4 minutes per game for the season. Same in the 98-99 season.

I think Washington will be fine, it’s the depth I’d be concerned with. I’ve seen nothing from High and idk who else they have.

We don't know how good Duke will be. Jon has a lot of mouths to feed. It's one thing to have 11 guys on scholarship, but this is unchartered territory. To have 11 guys (on paper) that can play?

It's also not smart (read offseason threads 2023) to say think the holes won't be that good this upcoming season. I hope they are garbage, but it's only May.

Let's be honest...they are always garbage, we just don't know how many games they will win.

Well it's a fan forum on the internet so talking about a rival and their roster isnt that far off. To say that's no smart is weird.

I actually think Flagg IS going to be the villain, but it’s a role I think he’s prepared for and welcomes. He’s known as a trash talker, which was on full display in both the McD and jordan brand games. You see it on his highlight films as well. He was also pretty outspoken after our season this year, suggesting that the team didn’t have the fight they needed but that was going to change. Not the words of a wallflower. Which is exactly what we need.

You can talk about another team, sure. But to sit here in May though saying our rival is going to need their star to score at least 40 for them to win is not smart. Maybe you'll be right. I hope you are.

I think espn is also a factor in how they portray a Duke player. Not saying that Grayson didn’t self inflict negative attention but I remember an espn article written before Grayson stepped on campus stating “the next Duke player you will hate”. They never let off the gas after that.

Does he realize they stress defense? Maybe Virginia needs a shooter. I was never on the Power train.
