Transfer portal thread

I think Reeves can really help us in year 3 or 4. Shame he didn't redshirt. He would need to make a huge leap to be in the rotation next year. So we should bring in another portal big man, regardless of what Flip does. I really like Young but he is probably best as a 8-10 minute guy.

Reeves and Young will get a bulk of playing time because they just know the system. I am in high agreement, the kid wasted a year not redshirting.

It's a solid frontcourt, just not a final four frontcourt. Add Flip and a transfer and we're cooking. The Dayton kid looks like a stud. He may be waiting on Flip; but he looks good enough to start. The Dayton kid, Flip, and Mitchell and Proctor and the freshman shooter. That's a heck of a starting 5. Then you have Young, Reeves, Blakes Schutt and the other 4 freshman. Wow that's 13 guys. Reeves and Power probably sit. Blakes or Schutt too. Allow for one injury or transfer. That's 9.

If we bring in the Dayton big and Reeves doesn’t get much playing time I think we see Reeves hit the portal next year, but that’s just me. There are a lot of Forwards on next years team and Young . As of right now I give Foster the starting nod over McCain.

In fairness though, do these final 4 teams have a front court better than that? Uconn maybe? Reeves will be fine and I bet if he stays he’ll make a nice impact next year.

Agree 44. In the limited action he saw last year he just looks the part. Obviously needs to develop but I do think he can help us as soon as next year, and be very good by his Junior year, if he stays.

He looked good against other teams scrubs in garbage time. It’s way different in a tie game late in the game in ACC play. I think he sticks around this year, playing limited minutes. And depending on what Foster does he’s here no matter what as a Junior if Foster stays. They were boys at Oak Hill. If him and Ryan Young get 75% of the minutes at the 5 next year, Duke is in trouble. They’ll still be good, but not final 4 good. I don’t wanna have another year where we have all the guard play and wings, but no bigs.

Yes I realize he played in garbage time, and it's different in a heated game. Just simply saying he looks the part and I think he will be good eventually.

Regarding Reeves, he was a redshirt candidate, so hopefully his expectations are tempered. I think he is a development big, who could give us 8-9 minutes a game next year, then maybe a leap the following year. We forget that these guys are freshmen! We are blinded and/or scarred from all of the one and dones. Nobody trusts the process anymore it seems. The nobody I speak of are the players and their parents.

Again though, which teams left have “final four bigs”? What did lively do offensively for Duke?

I only have one disagreement with you 937. If Reeves and Young can be consistently decent and healthy at the center position, and the rest of the team provides scoring and everything else, Duke will be fine. Lively was not great. He was decent. Young and Reeves have a year in the system.

He will give Duke 20 minutes and may start.

Reeves is a project, and he knows it. This kid isn't some Top 50 guy.

Guard play wins in the tournament, that’s why getting Proctor back can be seen as bigger than getting Flip back.

Obviously I want Flip back, we would be preseason #1 if we get him and Daron Holmes. Probably top 5 if just Holmes.

After watching the MCD AA game last night, Sean Stewart does have some “small ball 5” potential due to how athletic he is. But still, we can’t have just Reeves and Young as our only true 5’s on the roster. Reeves is a project and Young is matchup dependent. Take a team like Miami, Young absolutely cannot be on the court against fast/space the floor teams.

The fact that we are pursuing transfer big men tells me Reeves isn't a 20 minute guy. If he played this year maybe. And Young played 4-5 minutes vs. Tenn. If Flip comes back we will be fine, but what if Flip gets hurt? Or if Flip leaves, then the Holmes transfer makes sense. These things usually work themselves out.

How much did Young play against Tennessee? He’s great in spurts, but in tough, physical, competitive games he can’t produce much. Lively didn’t do much offensively, you’re right. I’m thinking more Mark Williams next to Paolo. I’m not saying Holmes is Mark or Flip is Paolo, but they complemented each other well. That’s what we could get next year with Holmes and Flip. Match that with the rest of the roster and that’s huge. You don’t get that with Reeves or Young. I think the staff knows that and that’s why they’re exploring.

If you played Tenn again, Jon and the staff would adjust to the matchups. We played without Mitchell, don't discredit that. Tenn were grown men, so you have to outcoach Barnes.

There was not enough high/low with Young and Flip. Lively needed to be played in spots. Any yes, the guard play must be on point in the tourney.

Holmes is not necessary the answer. He's a veteran upgrade from the A10. Reeves will make a contribution, but just like Flip and Lively, the weight room must be his second home.

No I don’t look at him as a project any more . If that’s the case why lift his red shirt? He already has Lively’s frame and averaged half a block in the brief minutes he saw on the court . He will have two years In Dukes system next season and IMO he played well in the limited minutes he got on the court . Sorry but you sit him next year or play him five minutes a game next season and that kids gone . He already burnt a red shirt so ..

Exactly why Duke is loaded with forwards and not centers . Even the Dayton kid is listed between 6’8” to 6’10”. Even with out Flip and Mitchell back . Dukes front court still goes from 6’8” to 7 foot . There is only so many spots on the floor . You throw more Mitchell type bigs on the floor that can guard multiple positions and the rebounding and defense remains in tact from this year . Duke needs solid shooters, which they are saying Duke has some coming in , to help stretch the defense and keep the game honest and allow the bigs to be effective.

His Countdown to Craziness stats are impeccable. It's hard to say with Reeves. At times he looked good and at times he seemed a little lost. He will get there, but it may take take time.

Holmes is already on the scouts radar. A year at Duke, even in a Lance Thomas role, can get him drafted.

He can contribute next year, but he cannot be our starting center next season. That's just the reality of where he's at.
I would not be surprised if he's the starting center. He and Lively were twins. Lively was just born two hours earlier.

If Reeves can just provide the rebounding and Defense half as good as Lively he will see the court . An entire off season and a pg or combo however we look at Foster , he’s used to playing with will give him confidence.

UConn's Adama Sanogo is pretty darn good. One of the better bigs that a lot of people don't know about at 6'9, 245 and averaged 17.1 and 7.5 a game this season.

I really like Norchad Omier for Miami, and he's not a traditional big and is undersized inside but what he does works for them. 6'7, 248 lbs. 13.3 a game and 10.1 boards. A lot of little things he does, timing on defensive plays, etc.

So in answer to your question I would throw out Sanogo. I'm torn on that game as far as my thoughts on how it will go. UConn is far more overpowering inside but Miami is a bitch to play against with all those ball handlers and shooters. They'll spread the Huskies out and make them work. I noticed ESPN gives Huskies a 76% chance to win. In this insane tournament can you give anyone that big a chance?

Can't speak for others but probably safe to say that most Duke fans are pulling for Miami. There's traditionally no love loss in the ACC but who wants the Huskies to tie Duke in Titles in only their sixth Final Four? Kind of disgusting but it is what it is. One of the rare times Kentucky and Duke fans will probably lock arms for a game LMAO) They've prevented two Duke titles but they've also prevented two Kentucky titles. I'm convinced that the Championship game is Saturday night at 9, I just don't see SDSU or FAU cutting any nets Monday, I think Cinderella's slipper shatters into a zillion pieces after that first semi-final game is over.

Well there’s an entire off-season to go - not sure why you’re discounting that?
I am not discounting that. Hey, I hope he takes off in year two. But the reality is he will be a big off-the-bench next season who we all hope can contribute significantly. Why else do you think we're going so hard for a starting 5 in the transfer portal?

Do you really want to go to the portal for a starter? Or a 5 that can support Reeves and Young?
