It's really bad. There is a picture of a guy who jumped over the center divider and literally put himself in front of oncoming traffic to stop them from driving off of I40 into the river. He saved so many lives. If you live outside of NC, you may not know how bad it really is in the mountains. What we’ve seen is of Asheville, and it’s awful. They showed videos over the weekend of water up near the rooftop of a McDonald’s. Chimney Rock, a small tourist town near Asheville, is almost gone. Most of it is in Lake Lure. Boone, the home of Appalachian State, was hammered, There are lots of other areas up there that aren’t getting any coverage that are just as bad, maybe worse.
Interstate 40 near the Tennessee border has been severely destroyed. Bridges are gone. So many people are stuck. We don’t know how many may be dead.
It’s so bad up there that I’ve heard multiple reports of men driving to the mountains, and taking pack mules to get supplies to many of the people up there.
Just a small example of how bad this is, this is a resident who lives at the top of a hill overlooking Chimney Rock. He has a few videos documenting the storm. Unbelievable stuff.
