The coaching of Jon Scheyer

[/QUOTE]
I hate the whole SEC and I live in Florida, so it sucks watching someone else win our championship. We will be back ladies and gentlemen! Considering the leap we made this year, I think there's a scenario where we are back next year!

The way Duke recruits I'm not so sure. The freshman model is quickly becoming a dinosaur. We will probably never see a freshman class like this again and didn't get squat from it. Duke better revisit how they want to build a team in the future.

I'm not the biggest OAD fan in the world but we did just go to the final four.
I like the direction Scheyer has Duke going. He’s smart and will continue to Evolve.

3 Seasons at The Helm
2 undefeated seasons at Cameron Indoor Stadium
1 ACC Regular Season Championship
2 ACC Tournament Championships
2 Elite 8s
1 Final 4

Duke will continue to be Fine

All I can say is I hope the NCAA gets the portal in check. NIL in check. And get rid of these 23-25 and 5/6 year players and it may get back to somewhat normal... Then we will start to see non superstar freshman players matter more. More emphasis on true development and team building and more of the norm... I would just love to see true Duke Development of our players like the old days. Mix good system pieces with star freshman... Takes full Buy-in though.

I’m convinced that the folks at Duke should write the sequel to Logan‘s Run. Now in that movie they killed people once they turned 30. In the Duke scripted sequel I guess 18.5 or 19.5 would be the cut off for eradication?

Logan's Run is one of my favorites, although Star Wars came along the next year and blew it out of the water.

Didn’t get squat? Huh? We won the ACC regular season and tourney, made the final four and lost a total of 4 games ALL in the last seconds
Seems pretty accomplished. Don’t let the last few min of the last game take away from how great this team was all year

I'm sure at the beginning of the season we would all be ecstatic to have the record we did this year. And don't forget beating the Cheats 3 times!!!
At the end, only 1 team will be happy and become champions.

^ Exactly what Blue said. Only 1 Team out of 365 Division I Men’s College Basketball Teams wins the National Championship each year in a single game loss elimination tournament.

If it was so easy then every team would have 1 National Championship already.

People saying this team didn’t accomplish much just don’t understand the game of basketball. Duke has been to the Final Four 18 times and have won the championship 5 times. That shows you how hard it is to win it all. As Pisgah said, this team was in every game that it loss during the final minute of play. Coaching is just like life, you learn as you go along. Coach Scheyer has gotten better each year and will continue to get better. Duke fans are spoiled and expect a title each year. Jon will bring one home soon. He was a great competitor as a player and I know he’s hurt more than anyone. Look at Coach Sampson, with all his experience he still couldn’t get it done.

We are a very spoiled fanbase, and it will only get better from here with Jon.

K lost as a strong favorite in his first FF bid, too. Hopefully it won't take Jon 5 FFs before bringing one home.

That's as heartbreaking a loss as I can remember in a long time. I suspect a repeat of my post-2019 response, where I just didn't care as much or enjoy it as much the next year. A team I really liked with players I really liked got prematurely bounced and entirely new faces the next year just don't get my buy-in.

I'm always too invested despite the moving parts. Though I think the '16 and '21 teams pushed me to care.

It was a wonderful year, and a lot of Duke fans really invested emotionally. I think a pretty decent number of fans who were starting to kind of drift away because of the state of college basketball and all the crap going on with the sport kind of reinvested again because of how wonderful this Duke team was. We’ll always appreciate this great group and what they did. But we’re also gonna have to accept the fact that the ending will be tattooed on Scheyer’s forehead forever or unless he somehow can win one. There’s no other way to spin it, and Duke fans are going to have to own it and swallow the PR criticism over it.

Now for our friends in Chapel Hill, who thoroughly enjoyed it, their coach and program have their own wonderful distinction. The largest blown lead in the history of the national championship game. 16 point second half lead choked away. (Beating K wasn’t the title, tho some of them act like it. )

The amount of gloating over us losing by fanbases whose teams didn't even make it close to the final four is strange.

Jealous fans envy Winners. One of my unc buddies text me after the game, “it’s the greatest night of my life.”

I had to quickly put him in his place and remind him, Duke losing in the Final 4 doesn’t erase the fact that unc basketball is not relevant at this time, they got eliminated by Ole Miss in the 1st round, and Duke beat unc 3X this past season.

Ended it with telling him, talk to me when you actually know and watch men’s college hoops

I agree. But let's also be fair about this. Duke gets a lot of attention. I mean a lot. So that only fuels the other teams and their fan bases. Sampson referenced it after they won. He also used it to motivate his players.
I think sometimes it bites us in big games too. Maybe it's me looking through my Duke glasses, but I think there’s been times the refs get influenced, and not in a way that benefits us.

Correct. No other program has the perception that they “get the calls”, not Kentucky, not the holes. It’s a way to deligitimize Duke’s success over the years. My brother for some unknown reason used to be an IU fan. He was convinced that the refs gave the 92 semifinal to Duke even though other than Chaney they had no one who would even sniff playing time at Duke. Damon Bailey prob would have gotten Marty Clark type minutes.
The refs nowadays go out of their way to make sure Duke doesn’t get the calls. If they’d have called our game the way they called the finals we’d have #6 right now. Call it sour grapes if you want that’s just the way I see it.

They hate Duke more than they love their own team. It’s a sickness, one that no amount of pills or whisky can solve.
I get the hate for Laettner. He was practically begging for it. Jj a little less so. But to hate on this year’s team when Coach K isn’t even here anymore says a lot about these folks.

Scheyer has been great. There are always philosophical debates and I think there is room to improve. But he has brought talent into the team. He's won two ACC Tournaments, an ACC regular season championship, went to the Elite 8 last year and went to the Final Four this year. That's pretty impressive for 3 seasons.

Fully deserving of coach of the year.

Fans that are impatient with coaches blow my mind. Coach K is hands down the best coach of the 64 team era; the best since 1980. Only Wooden is in the same conversation. And he was despised by most of the Duke fans in the early 80s who wanted him fired. So, as with every coach fans will complain about this or that, the fact is we got a very good coach in Scheyer.

I'm very happy he's the Duke coach. He's a good human being. He has compassion for his players and people. He's a class act. Which is hard to find in this day and age.

He can't control guys dribbling the ball off their leg in the clutch as happened twice, missing the front end of a 1 and 1, going 0-4 in wide open 3s. And the perfect storm of an accidental flagrant 1 that gave them a 6 point trip down the floor and brought them within 8. The game turned on that. Still, we had a great chance to win and get to the Final.

I also am very happy to see that he used his bench this year. This was a significant change from the previous 25 years of the K era.

I do think he needs to work on some things: 1) a few more offensive sets; 2) draw up some in bounds plays; and 3) continue to recruit in the portal. We need tough, physical vets. If we had not had Sion, Malik, and Mason, there's no way this team makes it to the FF. Their toughness was huge.

But what he did this year was great. Sometimes the ball just doesn't go your way. If Proctor hits his FTs, we win. If he hits 1 of his 4 open 3s, we win. If Gillis doesn't backhand that guy in the jaw, we win. imo.

One other thing.

I'd rather have Scheyer as our coach than Hubert Davis.

Jon was given the keys to the premier brand in college basketball with a decade long run of top recruiting classes. He has done great, but his start and K's start are not remotely comparable. That said I am very glad he is our coach. But he had huge advantages over Dawkins and Capel and Bobby H and Wojo.
But he has seized the opportunity beautifully.
