The coaching of Jon Scheyer

I think guys were tired, and when you are tired you make mistakes. Their pressure was relentless. A lot of the criticism I see is why we did not use the bench more. And unfortunately we resorted back to give Cooper the ball instead of running the offense.

Jon had accolades and praise all week. He can take a little criticism about what happened. He is in the big chair making the big money. You blow a 9 point lead in 2 minutes there are going to be questions. Jon will learn from this. But I agree it is staggering how the press turned on us. But to be fair it was a very public and dramatic meltdown. I still think we had a great year, but that was a painful end. The year UNLV boat raced us in the finals was painful as well, but we won it the next year. The difference is we had 4 starters back. Jon's job now is to keep the team from scattering to the 4 winds, besides the obvious NBA departures.
I'm sure Scheyer would have liked Proctor to pass the ball to Flagg . I believe Flagg would have scored or if he was fouled would have made the free throws. Scheyer was upset for the defense giving up the three pointers they were giving up too much space

It still burns me inside that we lost the other day. Keep playing those last few possessions in my head over and over again. 😢

Sampson been coaching nearly 40 years and he finally is getting his chance tonight. Izzo been there many times in 40 years and only won once. Although Geno Auriemma has won a bunch of championships, until yesterday he hasn't won one in 10 years. He said something to the fact that he wasn't sure if he made the right decision to keep coaching.

Point being is that we're going to feel the pain of the other night many more times in our hopefully very long lifetime. I'm sure it's hurt Jon more than anything that he's gone through. Hopefully he learns from this and continues to learn.
i agree with all of this. In the last few minutes of the game there was a string of several bad things that happened, all of which went in favor of Houston. In thinking back on it, if any one of those things had gone our way, we would have won and there would be a different tone to our discussions.

The frustrating thing is if any one of 10 things go our way late we would have won. We got tight/tired is the only explanation I can think of. Houston smelled blood in the water and at that point we were playing not to lose.
Edit: ha the post above said the same thing.

I’m Monday couch point guard coaching, would have loved to have seen a 2 man game between Knueppel and Flagg (the two guys who delivered all game)

The biggest gripe from me is Coach going away from his bench which imo led to the fatigue physically which led to the fatigue mentally which led to the turnovers, failure to box out, failure to defend the 3 point effectively.

The ACC was the weakest in the last 25 years. Kentucky beat Duke on a neutral floor and they finished 6th in the SEC. Duke was good, but they definitely were not the best team in the country.
I do think Scheyer is a good coach, but then again he had the best talent in the country.
You’re an idiot. Duke would have boat raced Kentucky in march

Who do you'll think Jon will reach out to as an assistant coach?

Within the brotherhood?

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Wake Forest beat Duke and finished sixth in the ACC. This was 1992. (lol) When March and April gets here, a November regular season game in particular is absolutely meaningless in terms of revealing anything about the prospects of the team who lost the game.

Btw Duke curb stomped one of the SEC’s elite teams last week and beat another elite SEC team that ended up in the Final Four.

Bull, totally with you on shortening the bench. Ngongba and Evans only combined for FIVE MINUTES Saturday nite. Houston definitely appeared the FRESHER team down the stretch of both halves.

OFC

Thanks Bleed! I try to be an optimist in life. I’m way too blessed to let a ball game get me down. I was upset Saturday night, but got over it pretty quickly. Life goes on and sports are just an outlet for me.
I need to be more optimistic. Right now this loss is really consuming all my thoughts. It's not healthy.

Best advice I can give you Brother is to distribute your energy towards other people and things that bring you happiness.

For me it’s:

Working Out
Family
Friends
Grilling Out
NBA (follow the former Blue Devils throughout the playoffs)
Being outside and enjoying the weather
Watching good shows (Last of Us Season 2 premiers on Sunday 04/13)
Going to the movies

I wish our guys were playing tonight too Bleed, but it’s very difficult to win it all and Duke bowed out in perhaps the Most Stacked Final 4 in Men’s College Basketball History, it’s not a failure in my eyes. All 4 Teams in this year’s Final 4 are some of the Greatest Men’s College Basketball Teams in the tournament’s history from both an Offensive and Defensive Efficiency Standpoint

Keep Your Head Up Brother

Thanks, brother, for the kind words! I have a lot of personal stuff going on of late, but the distraction of Duke basketball gave me such a positive emotional lift. The loss hit harder than usual because of it. Well, I take all my teams losing hard, but none harder than Duke or my dysfunctional Raiders. I get way too upset over sports. I have for years, and I need to be calmer. I love hiking and going to movies which I need to do more. Anyway, man, your kind words of encouragement mean so much; thank you!

Means the world, brother!

Sports can be a nice distraction, and this board is certainly fun. But I try not to get too emotionally involved. Not saying I don't care, but you can't hitch your happiness/hope wagon to something you have zero control over. I think after the Zion year I distanced myself a little bit. That is exactly why I do not predict natty's; because so much has to go right. Final Four is a more attainable goal; even sweet 16 is a good year. The game is also changing; and the constant roster turnover means less 4 year guys, etc. The NIL mania is a turn off for me but it is what it is.

Jon is a good, not great coach just yet but he’s already accomplished so much. Make no mistake, 98% of the programs out there would take him in a heartbeat. However, it’s okay to be critical and he had a very poor game Saturday at the worst time.

That loss hurts and it’s one that will never fully heal. This team without a doubt was the best team in the country and we should be about 2-3 hours away from hanging #6. I’m upset still at the moment and anyone who voices their frustrations here isn’t saying we didn’t have a great season and Jon didn’t do a wonderful job, but it’s okay to be pissed off.

The Duke train will roll on and we will be in a good spot to go to our 19th final four next year, but this is 99 team letdown. Sh*t sucks!

A lot of people, including Bilas, picked Houston to win the game. So while we were a great team, I'm not sure we were clearly the best team. The most talented team yes. Arguably the best team. With the best player. Prior to the tournament a lot of folks picked Florida.

Jon is smart, and will win a lot of games, but he got out coached by Sampson. Simple as that. No substitutions were made to give our main guys a break in the 2nd half, and it showed. Kon didn’t play like a lottery pick down the stretch. Other than a few free throws, he didn’t do much in the 2nd half. But he plays at Duke, so he’s a lottery pick and I doubt we see him as a tougher sophomore.
I’m not trying to hate on Proctor, but I just don’t get people hoping he stays. He wilts under pressure, and his ball handling is actually below average for a guard.

In spite of all that, we still should have won because we had Cooper. He’s that freaking good.

I want Proctor back because we need some continuity. Proctor can be frustrating but he is not that far from being an elite guard. Who knows what Foster is going to do. We need program guys that will stay. Pat, Evans, Brown. Proctor. I think we caught lightning in a bottle this year, mostly due to Cooper and Kon; returning only 2 guys is normally not a recipe for major success.
***Just checked the score Houston up 6 on Florida. Now tied.
Did Sampson really refer to the ACC as a toy poodle league? Damn.

In fairness, I'm not sure Sampson was referring to the Acc. I think he was saying that they dominated a great conference. I think the Big 12 was grossly overrated this year. That being said, I think he was touting his conference, not dogging ours.
