Some of us have been critical of him at times (anyone that did including myself was dead wrong) I keep seeing people say “he was born on third base” that didn’t help ANYONE that has ever followed “the man” all these same folks said Duke would fall off when K retired.. guess what.. we’re in a final four in year 3, went to the elite eight in year 2. We have owned our rival, won the ACC tourney twice, regular season once. Jon is currently tied for the most wins in the first 3 years of a career (I believe he’ll pass it by 2 and win the natty) it’s clear K made the right call with his retirement announcement and choosing Jon. Has to scare the rest of the nation to have a 37 yr old in this position

Let’s go duke!

His game day prep has been insane and probably the most underrated part of his coaching that nobody outside of Duke will notice.

His rotations/sub patterns have been phenomenal all year and we are out of the 7/8 man rotations. He had the balls to start Sion over CFOS.

He is really good with his timeouts. Called a few this year when we almost got a backcourt. Called that one yesterday when Bama found something. Jon wasn’t having it and immediately switched in Maliq for Pat.

And damn we are running beautiful offense this year. I think that was the slight knock the first two years was ball movement with a slower tempo. And this two man game with KK/Coop/Rese with Mal….beautiful to watch.

I agree with all that has been said above. I’ll confess I thought his offensive scheming was weak, but he stuck to his guns and was able to get the team behind him. Now they call their own plays and can adapt on the fly. Probably the most growth I’ve ever seen in a Duke team over the course of a season, going back to 1971.

It’s pretty clear his players love him as well. I’m feeling really good about the future of the program under his leadership.

First off, Coach K is a genius! The man just gave the university he loves so much the greatest parting gift: Jon MF'ing Scheyer!

I never understood the criticism of Jon. The man had to get his feet under him having never been a coach before. He had to find his own way and look how quickly he's done that. Jon was always the right choice and K knew it. The 2nd part of that is there probably isn't more than 2 days that go by that Jon and K don't talk. Jon having K as a sounding board and continued mentor is an unbelievable asset.
K allowing Jon to be his own man and his own coach is a testament to how much trust and love they have for each other.

Now there's unfinished business in San Antonio!!

LET'S GO DUKE!!!
DDMF!!!

Pretty amazing. Tied for most wins the first three seasons for a head coach at 89.

-2022/23, 27-9, ACC Champs, 🏆, tough round of 32 loss to Rick “foul em for 40 mins, the refs won’t call them all” Barnes. Very good first season!

-2023/24, 27-9, fair to say a disappointing regular season vs expectations of who came back and didn’t win anything in the ACC but was 20 minutes from the Final Four and after taking out top seed Houston, I was convinced they would beat NCSU,. “Good but just not good enough” was kind of the story of that team.

-2024/25, 35-3 so far, ACC RS & Tourney Champs 🏆🏆, and the fourth Duke Coach to reach the Final Four 🏆 with hopefully more games to play.

Duke hangs a conference banner in two of Jon’s first three seasons and is now in the Final Four. No Duke coach has ever started off this hot three seasons in. Not even the great Vic Bubas who did win the ACC Tournament in his first season in 1959/60 and won two games in the NCAA’s. Bubas went 22-6 in year two (3rd in league) and 20-5 in year three and finished 2nd in the league but you had to win the ACC tournament back then to go to the NCAA’s and Wake those two years was just a little bit better. Vic’s 1962/63 and 1963/64 Final Four teams owned the ACC. (4th and 5th year into his tenure)

Jon is without a doubt the right man for Duke and guys seem to love to play for him. A different approach than K, which is fine. Every Coach has to make it their own and put their own stamp on it.

You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh%#, so being at Duke helps. Jon is one smart guy though. His halftime adjustments prove that, and he had the team so prepared for Alabama.

He also understands the climate we are in, and has adapted to it.

I’m in no way calling last season a failure, because it wasn’t. But he knew he had to have a different roster. One that was built to be a Final Four caliber team. This proves he’s not afraid to make some tough decisions.

I think it is ok to be a critic of some of his adjustments during games. He is in year 3 of a 40-year contract. Yes, I said 40 years. Jon will be here for a while. We were all critical of K at times during his tenure. I think it is ok to be critical of him but I don't think I have ever read a post here that he was bashed. Just think...in 5 years Jon will have more Nattys than Dean. Take it to the bank.

I (like most) were a bit worried about Jon's passive demeanor during games, I remember in year 1 when we got robbed at UVA (Flip got fouled before the buzzer) and Jon didn't go crazy at the refs. K would have had a field day. Jon's offensive sets and playcalls were also questionable, even this year, remember in early December when we scored 28 points in the first half against Incarnate Wood? What about scoring 68 total against George Mason? Not to mention the end of game "clear out and let Cooper do it all" play calls against UK and Kansas.

Regardless...Duke obviously made the right hire. The Nov/Dec growing pains were worth it to get to the monster that we currently are. Offensively and defensively, seems like Jon is playing chess while other coaches are playing checkers.

I agree with all of this. If he wins it this year he has a significant head start on what will be a historic career
