"Roy Williams is a snake."

"If you ain't got a class with a basketball player you better go find one. If you got one with 'em...you know it's an "A."

"If you seen a basketball player and you dropped that class then you just ignant."

"I had a class with (bleeped out basketball player's name.) He didn't come to class at all. He just came to class for the test but he didn't even take it. There was this girl in front of us that took his test then she gave it to him then we ran a train on her."

Re: uncch scandal=TPowell,x-uncFB, "I took paper

you guys need to be copying that audio. the part about being TOLD to miss things on the test in Durham? that's to show that you qualify for an IEP, an individual education plan, which gives you the right to take a "notetaker" or a "helper" into your tests. this is big: they were TOLD to screw it up on purpose so they get the helper to take their tests for them. this is how they passed the real classes that were tough. That's gaming the system big time and may be illegal. certainly extremely unethical. the NCAA needs to hear this audio. and Dan Kane too.

unc faculty want more input, power over athletes' academics

...some urged more assertive control of academic decisions regarding athletes.

Four professors who authored one of the letters arrived at the meeting Monday with a challenge that faculty be a vocal defender of the academic enterprise - and willing to stand up to athletics.

"Things are bad now at this university," said Rudi Colloredo-Mansfeld, professor and chairman of the anthropology department. "We are sitting amidst the worst athletic/academic scandal in the history of U.S. collegiate sports and we are ground zero.

But others asked why, for example, Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham and Michelle Brown, the director of the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes, are advisers to Renner's committee and attend the meetings. Renner said it is for information and efficiency in faculty getting the facts they need.

"Bubba is an influential guy with a substantial presence," said Jonathan Weiler, director of Global Studies. "I think his regular appearance in the room influences the conversations. I think that that's something that should be considered seriously if we're thinking about these oversight issues. He's a powerful person on this campus. He's one of the highest paid people on this campus

One thing several faculty stressed was that unc not let the AFAM "disaster" pass without making significant change.

"The response of the administration seems to have been that no further change needs to happen, all the reforms have taken place, so the most important thing that we should all do is make happy talk about carolina and change the subject," Watson said. "That just seems horrible to me in the midst of all this."

Like or not, Watson said, the scandal does define carolina in the eyes of the nation and world right now.

"We have broken our trust," he said. "We can't just claim that trust back. We have to earn it. And we have to earn it by confronting this, and trying to remedy our shortcomings, and not change the subject."

Walter Williams: Phantom courses disservice to black students

The University of North carolina made this accommodation; many athletes were enrolled in phantom courses in the department of African and African-American studies. The discovery and resulting scandal are simply the tip of the iceberg and a symptom of a much larger problem.

How cruel is it for unc to admit students who have little chance of academically competing on the same basis as its other students?

Unfortunately, and to the detriment of black people, there is broad support among black members of the academic community for practices that lead to academic fraud. In the wake of the unc scandal, the carolina Black Caucus - a campus group of administrators, staff and faculty - rushed to the defense of the black athletes and the department of African and African-American studies, claiming an unfair investigation and unfair public and media attack.

Interesting stuff in the latest blog from unx alum Bob Lee. Much of it in the "COMMENTS" section....

Matt Merletti & Bryn Renner refute Tydreke.... sort of. Drag this podcast link to your URL bar. Its a 30 minute podcast....

If unc had a roster full of Matts and Bryns we would not be in this mess. They even acknowledge towards the end that unc under Butch did not have a roster full of Matt & Bryns.

Prior to Marvin's tweet, many unc Madeleines thought happy thoughts that unc rosters overflowed with Matts and Bryns..... aka The carolina Way. :-(

I'm sure neither Matt nor Bryn ever sat with Mary for remedial reading.

FROM: BobLee 2.0

Listening to Tydreke Powell then listening to Merletti & Renner one realizes those young men had absolutely nothing in common but wearing the same helmet.

Merletti & Renner want to believe they were all "a band of brothers" with Tydreke and his sidekicks but they were not.

I believe a certain Internet Legend has written of the Gladiator / Spectator Chasm. It can exist among the Gladiators just as easily.

Crowder understood the chasm but was waaaay off in how to bridge it.

I never thought commissioning what turned out to be the Wainstein Report was a good idea because, while it was sure to provide some answers and details we did not have, it was also bound to rekindle more bad publicity for unc and raise new questions.

MARY WILLINGHAM ADDS UNC CHANCELLOR CAROL FOLT TO LAWSUIT, SAYS SHE WAS CALLED A LIAR

Former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill advisor Mary Willingham, the whistleblower who claimed some student athletes were functionally illiterate, has amended her lawsuit against unc to include Chancellor Carol Folt - who she accuses of calling her a liar.

Willingham's lawsuit now challenges that response, alleging that Folt and other unc leaders at a January 2014 meeting "falsely informed the attending members of the UNC-CH Faculty Council that Plaintiff's research into UNC-CH's athlete literacy, as reported by CNN, was 'so flawed' that it had 'no merit.'"

The lawsuit also alleges Folt called Willingham "a 'liar' for having shared her personal research with CNN and others."

Willingham has written a book with unc History Professor Jay Smith titled "Cheated: The UNC Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports." It is due out in March.

You don't need to post this one if you don't want to, just wanted to point out, the director of that Durham organization that tests for learning disabilities is Catinia Farrington. That is the same name as the girlfriend of Fats, who actually rented some of the cars that athletes were driving when they got tickets.

I don't want to go to far with the line of thinking, since it's mere speculation. But if Fats' girlfriend was the one giving fake LD diagnoses to athletes with the knowledge of anyone with a unc job ... ?!?!?!?

BL

Catinia is Fats Thomas' girl friend and partner-in-scam !!! Good Lord.... Holy Choo Choo Batman.

Not a Good Tuesday in Zigga Zoomba World at all.

Just so we're clear. Tydreke stated in his interview that he and other unx athletes were sent to a facility in Durham to take a battery of tests. unx specifically instructed them to fail on purpose. By doing so , the athletes would earn the "learning disabled" tag. That label allowed the players to be assisted , IN CLASS! , by an academic advisor , tutor , whatever...even during exams. Not a bad way to ensure decent grades in those courses that actually required some measure of academic effort. Topping it off , Fats' ol' lady ( Katinia ) ran a learning center in Durham during the time-frame. The implications of this are staggering even if Fats had nuthin' to do with it. Geez Louise , only at unx...

At least one former player doesn't absolve Davis. A man who identified himself as former North carolina defensive tackle Tydreke Powell told a Greensboro, N.C. radio station that Davis "came into a meeting one day and he said, 'If y'all came here for an education, you should have went to Harvard."

Davis acknowledges the remark, but insists that Powell misunderstood the point. "I said that, OK, in the context that I made that statement one time, and it was a poorly phrased context, but I said it half comical and half in the form of 'stop complaining,' Davis says. "Your days are long. It's a long, hard day. You've got to practice, you've got to study, you've got to go to class, you've got to take notes, you've got to do extra work. If you wanted to just get an education period, and you didn't want to play in a high profile football program, and you didn't want to chance to go to the NFL, you should have gone to Harvard. It was totally kind of halfway joking and halfway whimsical, comical, and halfway saying 'hey guys, I hear you. I know being a student-athlete in a Division I major college program in any sport is harder than just being a student.' If you just wanted to be a student, you should have gone to Harvard, you know?"

Damn shame that unx educators have to report anomalies in confidence for fear of being "Willingham'd..."

unc considers system to report academic, athletic concerns

Amid the tough findings of an investigation that found a bogus paper class scheme inflated grades and helped keep athletes eligible for nearly two decades, officials at unc-Chapel Hill are developing a standardized system to report concerns about academics and athletics.

Members of the university's Faculty Athletics Committee during a meeting Tuesday discussed how such a system might work, what it might look like and how the university would respond to concerns, among others, of athlete clustering and questions of the legitimacy of athletes' grades.

"We want to make it easy for people to raise their hand and ask the question" of whether an issue warrants further investigation, Joy Renner, the Faculty Athletics Committee chairwoman, said during the meeting.

unc is preparing the reporting system after an independent investigation led by Kenneth Wainstein, a former U.S. Justice Department official, uncovered the depth of bogus paper classes in the African and Afro-American Studies Department.

Those courses, which spanned 1993 through 2011, were filled with a large percentage of athletes, often football and basketball players, who received high grades for doing little or no work. Since the Wainstein report was released, unc has grappled with the question of how to ensure a similar scandal never happens again.

A standardized reporting system to raise concerns about the intersection of athletics and academics, Renner said, would be accessible to everyone - students, athletes, faculty, tutors - and would allow concerns to be logged and investigated.

The Faculty Athletics Committee discussed one concern raised by a tutor from the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes. The tutor questioned whether athletes were being steered toward Drama 115 and Drama 116, and whether there was an overlap in the two courses that led to questions about originality of work.

Renner handed out to committee members a draft of the "Issue Review, Analysis, and Recommendations" surrounding the tutor's claim. The preliminary analysis concluded there was no evidence of grade inflation for athletes, or clustering, outside of rare cases during a five-year period.

Renner emphasized that what she handed out was a draft while the committee works to decide how the reporting system would work and what data analysis methods it would use to investigate potential questions.

One of the objectives of the system would be to grant anonymity to those who raise concerns. Renner said the committee's goal is to have a reporting system in place as soon as December.

Supposedly PackPride is doing a little investigation based on what I gathered from the main board. Supposedly, players were driven to Durham to a learning disability center to take a test. If they failed the test, they could get into UNC despite lower than low test scores/grades. The rumor is that there is one person connected to UNC that lives in Durham...Fats. It was said that Fats girlfriend runs a learning disability center in Durham...

This could be total BS but leave to PackPride to pull up something.

Another player. Bernadette Gray-Little. Former provost at unx. Chancellor at KU now. Memory issues too. Go figure...

3. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, LITIGATE

Work with me here, people. I'm quite perplexed.

On one hand, it seems like the only way North carolina will be punished for making a mockery of the student-athlete model is by any player (or many players) suing the school for breach of contract because it funneled players into bogus courses.

On the other hand, it's utterly laughable that Michael McAdoo is suing unc because he was steered into useless courses - when all he had to do was say "no."

The problem is this: if the NCAA would simply do its job - instead of swinging and badly missing (or is that intentionally missing?) the first time around - I wouldn't have to hope and wish and get on my knees and pray McAdoo wins a court case he clearly has no business initiating.

Then again, this is America, and we have attorneys, and the landscape for the NCAA in the legal system has never been more vulnerable. In other words, anyone could sue amateur sports' governing body for just about anything.

And get away with it.

So let's recap for McAdoo: never lived up to his recruiting hype at unc, his career was cut short by academic scandal, his NFL career lasted a year, his CFL career lasted less than that. And now he's deciding that, yes, after the football thing didn't work out for him and he has zilch to fall back on, it's time to - wait for it - hire an attorney!

You must be so proud of yourselves, unc, for producing such stand-up men for society.

Was it really worth it?

What the author fails to mention is that McAdoo wasn't ever given a choice. Could he have said , "no" to the classes? Sure. But he was brought in to play football. Period. He wasn't a student to begin with. unx KNEW this. What did he know of "choices?" unx brings 'im in , hands 'im a class schedule and says , "now go play football." Jus' for sheets an' giggles , let's pretend that McAdoo and his limited academic abilities DID say "no." Say he WANTED legit courses. unx woulda never allowed it. That or they'd get rid of 'im. The more I've thought about it , the less I'd put ANY of this on kids who were incapable of doing college-level work in the first place.

Dear Alumni and Friends:

This is not the email I thought I'd be sending you this fall.

You are no doubt aware that a report on past academic irregularities at carolina was recently released. This account of irregular classes was deeply disturbing and we accept the findings, one of which was that insufficient oversight allowed the classes to exist for so long. From the time we first learned of these irregularities in 2011, my colleagues and I in the College of Arts and Sciences have implemented significant reforms to ensure that nothing like this happens again. Now that we have a thorough understanding of what occurred, we are using this information to guide us into becoming better and stronger. (Read more about the report and reforms at http://carolinacommitment.unc. edu.)

And yet I also feel certain that the carolina experience cannot be reduced to these improprieties. Over the past few weeks, I have watched our students on their way to classes, labs and studios, and I am reminded of the great work the faculty, staff and students in the College are doing every day.

During their four years in Chapel Hill, our students will be taught, motivated and inspired by expert faculty. They will be challenged to think critically, communicate clearly and generate ideas confidently. They will deepen their knowledge with experiences outside traditional classrooms. And they will forever belong to the carolina family - a community like no other.

I have first-hand experience of that last part, the sustaining support of our carolina family. Over the last two months, the continuing support of alumni and friends like you has demonstrated a vote of confidence in our faculty and students and has carried us through this difficult time. For this, I thank you.

I ask you to consider joining me in supporting the College with a gift to the Arts and Sciences Annual Fund. Your gift allows us to continue the academic excellence that is at the heart of a carolina education. Your gift allows us to:

Recruit and retain distinguished faculty
Provide opportunities for student internships and global experiences
Fund faculty and student research
Innovate the classroom experience. Our successes in using active learning techniques have recently been covered by The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today.

For 221 years, students have come to carolina to seek opportunities that will forever transform their lives. For nearly as long, alumni and friends like you have given generously of themselves to make those opportunities possible. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Karen M. Gil

ACCREDITATION WARNING LETTER HEADED TO UNC

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has sent UNC-Chapel Hill a warning letter about its accreditation status in the wake of the Wainstein Report.

SACS President Dr. Belle Wheelan confirmed Thursday that the letter is in the mail, and should be received in a matter of days.

Wheelan would not reveal the contents of the letter, and SACS is not subject to public records laws.

SACS said in October it was reviewing the Wainstein Report and would be notifying the University of any core value violations. UNC will then have 30 days to respond and detail any course of action they are taking to correct those violations.

When asked about the accreditation review, UNC Provost Jim Dean told ABC11, "The entire university should not be punished for the academic fraud that went on for nearly 20 years."

"During that period of time that the report represents, we had about 97,000 students and about 3,000 of those students were engaged at the most in this activity," said Dean. "So as bad as it was, to say that it represents the whole university is pretty disingenuous."

SACS, which has 804 institutions under its jurisdiction, has a lengthy list of core values upon which it bases its accreditation. The SACS board meets in December and June, but the executive council does have the power to act outside of those two meetings if circumstances warrant.

In Jan. 2013, UNC was put on notice by SACS when the AFAM scandal first surfaced. SACS sent a strongly worded letter advising UNC to take immediate actions to pull itself into compliance accreditation standards. Eighteen months later, SACS said the school had a reform plan in place and would retain its accreditation.

The Wainstein report "will be treated as a completely new issue", Wheelan said. "Right now, UNC is fully accredited, nothing has changed and nothing will change until the board has acted."

Once SACS completes its review and UNC responds, it will be up to the association to either put UNC on warning, on probation, or drop the school from membership

The Great Unpleasantness has become unpleasantier. It wasn't "all over" with those unpaid parking tickets way way way back when.... or with The Martin Report.... or with Ken's Report. Cheated: The unc Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports

In 2010 allegations of an utterly corrupted academic system for student-athletes emerged from the University of North carolina at Chapel Hill campus, home of the legendary Tar Heels. Now, however, the fallout of this scandal-and the continuing spotlight on the failings of college athletics-has made the school ground zero in the debate about how the $16 billion college sports industry operates.

Written by unc professor of history Jay Smith and unc athletics department whistleblower Mary Willingham, Cheated: The unc Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports exposes the fraudulent inner workings of this famous university. For decades, woefully underprepared basketball and football players have taken fake courses and earned dubious degrees from one of the nation's top universities while faculty and administrators looked the other way. Cheated recounts the academic fraud in unc's athletic department and makes an impassioned argument that the "student-athletes" in these programs are being cheated out of what, after all, was promised them in the first place: a college education.

Editorial Reviews

"The underlying fraud in big-time college athletics is academics. With the most comprehensive accounting, Smith and Willlingham paint an absolutely devastating picture of how so-called student-athletes are shamelessly exploited. . . . Cheated is nothing less than an American tragedy."-Frank Deford, author of The Entitled and senior contributing writer for Sports Illustrated

"This book informed me that, as a black athlete and a student, more awareness and information about the universities you attend must be thoroughly analyzed before making a decision about your future. The details of fraudulent education and unprepared black athletes in this book should shame our society. I am a living testimony that this book is the Pandora's box of university secrets and black athlete exploitation. It is a must-read."-Rashad McCants, former NBA player and unc NCAA Champion

"Smith and Willingham's exposé of the corruption at the University of North carolina reads like a suspense thriller but unfortunately is nonfiction. Michael Jacobs is CEO of Jacobs Capital and a professor at unc, where he teaches MBA classes on corporate governance and business and government....and he's a shameless tarhole homer...

Jay Smith rebuttal...

Jay M. Smith: Revisionist history on unc scandal

Regarding the Nov. 12 Point of View " What athletic scandal?": Michael Jacobs has things backward, and it is sad to see the residue of denial continuing to contaminate good minds.

To Jacobs' argument that "athletes were not the only ones enrolled" in the fake classes and that the scam was therefore not primarily athletic in nature, there is one obvious retort: Would this course scam have existed if not for the presence of athletes who "needed" lightened academic burdens?

Of course any academic fraud is incubated on "the academic side" of the university, because athletic departments cannot create courses and do not participate in teaching. But the demand for fraud in this case clearly came from "the athletic side" of the campus. No amount of revisionist history will change the brute fact that athletes were at least 12 times more likely to take a fake class than regular unc students (48 percent of enrollees were athletes; 4 percent of the student body are athletes).

Jacobs' insinuation that "a vocal group of faculty" is out to "eliminate athletics" from unc is also a gross distortion. The Athletic Reform Group advocates for the best long-term interests of athletes and seeks transparency and integrity across the university. These goals, by now, should be uncontroversial.

Recently , B-Rad (in his usual stupidity and arrogance) offered a "Wainstein Report Exam" on his dumb=azz blog. It begins...

I have constructed an exam that I am proposing all UNC faculty members require themselves to pass before commenting on the Wainstein Report publicly. Misinformation hinders democratic participation because it undermines our ability to form sound opinions. Hodding Carter, Jay Smith, and Harry Watson have contributed to the spread of misinformation by pontificating on the implications of the Wainstein Report as if they had actually read it closely. I implore them and others to spare us their opinions unless they can pass this exam, which actually should not be difficult. I have made it very easy.

Sickening. Anyway , a Duke fan has his own blog and he responds to the "exam." Good stuff. Check it out....

I was told for a number of years that athletics was in charge of our institution -- a sad state of affairs. #ncaareform

@paperclassinc @dankanenando Do you mind telling who said Athletics was in charge at unc Chapel Hill for all of those years?

@ncstatenate11 @dankanenando Watch the documentary "Schooled". It was, of course, my boss.
