Sounds Like Baldwin Playing for His Dad at UWM

That’s fine to be critical of him, but to talk about a UNC player putting his nuts in his face is a crazy thing for a Duke fan to say.
You think THAT was crazy to say? Man, that doesn’t even rank in the top 10 of what was said by Duke fans this past season.

I love how Quavarius brings up the years Duke struggled to make his argument. Most sensible Duke fans love talent, even OAD talent. After what we’ve seen the last few seasons, it’s understandable why many are skeptical of bringing in 3 or 4 OAD’s. But, and it’s been proven, talent only takes you so far, especially if you lack chemistry. The best example of that is the 17-18 team. Loaded with talent, but too many chefs and not enough dishwashers.
We had the perfect blend in 15, especially after Sulaimon was booted off. But, that team only came into the season with 1 expected OAD, and the best thing about Okafor may have been how unselfish he was.
Of course I bring up those years because when we were struggling, everyone said we needed talent when we had experience and now everyone is saying we need experience when we get talent. It just seems like fans don’t remember asking for what they are getting and now they act like they don’t want what they’re receiving. And you’re speaking for the sensible fans; I’m not.

I would rather have younger talent and have Coach K mold them into an unselfish team than have less talented upperclassmen and have Coach try to make them into a talented team.
Me too! And that’s what most sensible Duke fans wanted a while ago as well. Not sure what changed

We must be watching different clips. The most unimpressive supposed OaD I've ever seen. This kid is going to get killed in college, forget the NBA. Yes he can shoot for a big dude but I'm not seeing much that is gonna translate him into a good college player. Maybe I'm dead wrong but I don't think I am.
He's a shot blocking machine.

Chet to Gonzaga. Skinny or not that kid can play. I thought he was going to the G league. Good month for Gonzaga. I know they lost but still made the final four. Zags now with 2 one and dones, and two top 5 guys.
Hope you don’t mind a UK fan asking a question here but , one of our insiders reported that Chet’s handlers/coaches? didn’t allow Calipari or coach K to even recruit the kid . Have you guys heard this ? Seems strange.

I haven't heard this but he never seemed to show interest in Duke. Maybe because we already had Williams and were the favorites for Banchero?

I don’t really buy that. Holmgren has been Gonzaga-bound for well over a year. The only reservation he might have had was to see what Suggs experience was like, and obviously it must have been good enough for him not to waver.

As someone who has watched Holmgren a number of times in person, I’ll just say I’m very impressed. I think he’s going to show out just fine in college. Of course, he needs to get bigger and stronger and that could potentially be an obstacle, but he’s incredibly gifted.

If any Duke team/players deserve to be criticized, it was this past years squad.

Yeah they couldn’t help coming to Duke during the worst pandemic in over 100 years. We will never know this teams true potential if this was a normal season.
But a player that got nut dragged by our rivals and is reportedly to have told recruits he was hosting not to come to Duke should be criticized for a while. Sorry if you love Paulus that much.

Wait, Paulus was telling people not to come to Duke? Or am I missing something here.

I think he looks extremely slow and more developed guys will eat him alive. With that said, he will play in a conference next year with glorified high school teams.

Thems were the rumors. I forgot which player it was.
My buddy’s cousin is dating Kennard. They have since high school. Luke’s final 3 were Duke, UK, and Ohio State. On his visit to OSU I was told that Paulus pretty much slammed Duke and K. Saying Luke would be buried on the bench. How he should just go to OSU and not worry about it..

Yeah, I think you must be watching something different than the rest of us. Watch his game against Emoni Bates. He was clearly the most dominant player on the court. He's an elite-level shot blocker. Wouldn't be surprising at all if he averages north of 4 blocks a game. We're talking Anthony Davis-elite shot blocking ability. He's thin, but he doesn't back down. He's got grit and fire. Good ball handler, rebounder, and shooter. People use the term unicorn a little too loosely when referring to gifted basketball players, but Holmgren really is a unicorn.

I’m not a big Paulus fan. But you’re forcing me to have to stick up for him. Same way you go around here sticking up for every one and done we have.
Every team had to deal with the pandemic, so ultimately it was still an even playing field. Duke wasn’t at some extreme disadvantage this year.

If he did in fact say that, then Greg was dead wrong. Luke shined at Duke.

Who is saying 40-0? Who is saying National Championship? There isn’t ONLY one way to win a championship because if it was about experience, Duke would have won several championships from 2002-2011. After seeing experienced Duke teams struggle to get past the Sweet 16 (remember that knock on us), I’ll take my chances on talent.
And I’ll take my chances with an experienced team. The four championships prior to 2015, were won by experienced teams. Even in 2015 . If it wasn’t for Amile’s defense on Frank when Jah went out that game might not have the same out come, or Quinn’s scoring and leadership or Matt Jones defense and shooting . So yes while talent is good you still need a supporting cast with upperclassmen leadership.

Duke and Kentucky are just seen as one and done schools now. Just visit any other team's message board. And the players know they will be recruited over and the OADs will get most of the minutes. It just is what it is. So we now have to deal with that AND the transfer thing. Just brutal.

The four championships you speak of were won pre-OAD. You seem to forget Grayson Allen’s scoring and Tyus Jones’ huge 3 to clinch the title in your praise for our upperclassmen in that game. What year was they again?

Come on Q. Stop with the nonsense. This isn’t as much OAD vs experience as you try to make it. Sure you have some on the far side that say they don’t want OAD’s, but the reality is we want to see them give their all for however long they’re here. That isn’t happening, a few of them just didn’t pull a Jalen.
For the record, show me a team that won it all solely on the backs of the OAD?

What is another problem is the development of our bench over the years, or lack of.

You could still go one and done no one made these kids stay in college. Over seas has always been there. Did I praise just them? NO . And tyus wasn’t the only one who won that championship or Grayson coming off the bench and he wasn’t one and done and tyus stock wasn’t getting no higher just like tre’s and no one thought he was one and done or Winslow so your argument means nothing out side of Okafor .

Right, I want to stick up for him. And again, it’s similar to how you want to stick up for the one and done guys.
I already know this conversation is going nowhere with you. That’s fine, I still like you as a poster. Just not a fan of your takes on Greg Paulus.

Paulus stayed 4 years, graduated, and probably even completed his second semester classes. That's brotherhood to me.

I'm not saying we're gonna win that game but, Holmgren is not gonna be the reason we lose. He's going to get eaten alive because they don't really have a lot dudes to match up Williams and Banchero. I personally don't understand why he is rated higher than Banchero either, he's frail and he's not so much more skilled than Banchero to make up for his (lack of) frame.
Timme down low can and they can match us their and their PG will be evenly match and their wings are good too. So if they lose Timme they could be beat down low

"Duke will never get a guy from the Sizzle program. When it was reported one time that Duke was going to check out Chet, I checked in and was told, to put it nicely, no thanks..."

So from a barely above 500 team we've lost Steward, Goldwire, Hurt, Brakefield and Coleman. Hope those freshman are good. You would think Baldwin's coming the way our forwards are flying out the door.

That’s selective revisionist history. You can praise him for that now, but my guess is that when he was here many posters weren’t as fond of him as they are now for ‘graduating’....

Ultimately, whether we care to admit it or not, we’re more concerned about winning. We can say otherwise, but our actions over the years suggest otherwise.

I liked Greg and am thankful he played at Duke and had a nice career, but let’s not pretend that because he graduated and was here for four years we applauded him at the time. Few did.
