"In the world of college basketball these days, Kentucky and Duke have become the choice destinations for the best of the best high school players. UNC, meanwhile, has fallen out of favor – and it can't solely be blamed on the ongoing NCAA mess, Williams said on Wednesday.

What John has recruited and what Mike has recruited – I tried to recruit those same guys,” Williams said, referring to Kentucky's John Calipari and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. “So you don't have any idea what makes decisions. I know that because of the stuff that's been going on for the last two and a half years, I know we've suffered."

Loved this quote lol....

“Hell,” Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said on Wednesday at the ACC's annual basketball media day. “I know more professional golfers than all the other coaches in this league put together. OK?”
That'll surely resonate with a high school kid who doesn't care about golf.

I hate the one-and-done era. Absolutely hate it as a college basketball fan. But you know what? It's a reality. Obviously Roy knows that as well....despite what UNC fans try and tell you. They've said how they don't want UNC to turn into a one-and-done factory. And while there's probably some truth to that (because I know there is for me with Duke), they're also sick of watching Duke and UK pluck most of these top kids.

Basically, my point is that UNC is trying hard to be just like Duke and UK....they're just failing miserably.

Coach K and Roy Williams were both asked direct questions yesterday about the level of a coach's responsibility. Here are the two direct-quote responses:

Roy: "You have responsibilities, there's no question. But I find it hard to have responsibility for things I have no control over...But each case is completely different. You should be responsible for what your players do on the court. You should be responsible for teaching them, leading by example, and teaching them the right things to do. You should be responsible for emphasizing the academic side, you should be responsible for making sure they go to class, and making sure you have the right discipline if they don't go to class. I cannot make a youngster learn. I cannot make them do a lot of other things, and in today's world, in the college environment, they tell a coach, "You're not involved in the academic side, you're not talking to the teachers, you're not talking to the tutors, you're not doing those things because they want to keep them separated, but yet you're responsible for everything. It's a hard position to be in, and in some ways it's not fair. The head coach is responsible. The buck stops somewhere, but there are a lot of things going on that just going that, whether I believe it's fair or unfair it doesn't make any difference, but there are a lot of things going on that aren't just right. Still, it's the job we chose..we are where the buck stops. I don't think it's very realistic in a lot of areas and I wish it would change in a lot of areas, but it's my responsibility to emphasize the right things..it is very hard to say that I am responsible for everything that happens 24 hours a day when I'm not there."

K: "I know as a leader of a corporation and a program, I am ultimately responsible. That's the way it is. At West Point, I learned that the commander is responsible and the CEO is responsible and the president and head coach are responsible."

I think the difference is pretty clear. Roy rambles and deflects as best he can. There is a reason K is who he is, and Roy is who is and is dealing with what he is dealing with. I know I'm so glad Duke has the guy they do.

Roy's system is NOT geared toward OAD kids. He doesn't feature them at all. His system is hard to learn which is why freshmen rarely thrive. Harrison Barnes took a full season to grasp the concepts and it cost him millions. These recruits see the writing on the way. They know Roy can't and won't adapt to them. As long as Roy is at Carolina, they won't land another OAD type player unless it's a legacy kid like JMM... Yeah, JMM... How'd that work out

Gosh dad gummit I love this. I can't wait to read any comments from the THR crowd, that is if they say anything at all because it does you know, make them sound really stupid like we have said all along. Thank you Roy.

This is a tail between the legs and walk away moment for THR.

Based on those quotes from Huffy, I think this "K" guy might just turn out to be a pretty good hire. Just saying...

Unless UNC players can run and gun without a lot of Coaching, they will never win another "Ship". All of his best teams (Kansas/UNC) were that way. Turn them loose and get out of the way.
Right now, with all the eaters he has, he may even have trouble this year!!
Go Duke!!

Anyone else see this as Roy ratting out his bosses at UNC? As a professor, coaches of my students contact me routinely to see why athletes aren't doing well. It's a common practice everywhere. Did someone tell Roy to not check up on players' grades? If so, let's hear who told you that, Roy. If not, then STFU.

I'll be honest....I'm not sure I've seen many, if any, UNC fans say they don't recruit one-and-done players. How stupid would they have to be to say that? They obviously do recruit them.

That said, where I've taken issue with UNC fans is how they claim K has sold out by taking one-and-done kids. Roy would take them too....he just can't get many to take a second look.

The complaining about Duke and UK getting the kids they are is based on one thing and one thing only....UNC can't and aren't doing the same thing. Basically they're crying because they're getting their asses handed to them on the recruiting trail by the two programs who they feel they should be on the same level with....but it hasn't been happening.

Based on that quote I think Roy has made it clear which THR poster he is... Lol what's the one that rambles on and says nothing's name? I keep getting all the crazies mixed up

oy, that was a huge bitchslap to the THR Clown Posse.
Yeah it was. On an number of levels too. First of all , Roy acknowledged that it wasn't just all that NCAA "junk" that's been hurting his recruiting. That "perception" he's whining about is , btw , a reality. Players ARE faced with being held back under Roy. He also shattered a lot of THR rhetoric by admitting what everyone already knew...he recruits the same kids as Cal and K. Roy just doesn't get 'em. And lest we forget...these concessions weren't made by accident. Someone convinced 'im that the recruiting was probably gonna continue its downward spiral regardless of what the NCAA does or doesn't do. This homespun little chat was scripted. "Ok , dadgummit! Ya'll can come play here agin. I dun got rid of them 2 an' 3 year plans for ya'll really gud players. I promise."

As soon as those arrogant recruits turned Roy down it was decided by THR that they were not UNC caliber recruits anyway and they wouldn't mesh with the other players. Had they chosen the Holes they would have been fine young representatives of the great school.

i completely disagree DJ

I have been a regular at THR since 07'.

I love the guys and gals there. Their board was the first board I liked other than UK's. I have made a lot of friends there and have the utmost respect for 95% of them. And to this day I just assume post there as anywhere.

But since Calipari became our coach all I've heard them say is UK is OAD University and they would never want UNC to go that route. And Roy doesn't go for OAD's. Or from a few of my friends there, if Roy ever starts bringing in OAD's then I'll never be a UNC fan again.

So, you might not know many UNC fans that said that, but I know several over at THR that did,

And to be honest, up until last year, many here was saying the same thing until K got three stud freshman that cut down the nets.

It's funny how championships change your mind???????????

JC you are 100% correct in that many on this board did say it but as you know its different when you hook a few like Parker, Jones, JAH and Winslow. I don't think many here will deny saying it. Now the THR fans are definitely in denial which we all know is a lie.

And despite not posting at THR in probably five years, I posted on or read their board regularly since 2003. But I'm not sure what that has to do with this topic.

Anyway....no one here was saying anything about not recruiting one-and-done's up until last year. We've been doing it for over a decade and have had kids who were one-and-done prior to last year. I haven't ever hid from my disdain of the one-and-done era, but I also understand that ultimately it's a part of the game.

Don't take offense to this, but I think UK fans are awfully touchy when it comes to anyone questioning Calipari about anything. I'm sure it's tiresome, but it's always going to be there. He does have a history...right or wrong. And it's the same history UK fans were outraged about when he was at Memphis.

Now, could a few of dumb UNC fans said what you're claiming? Yeah maybe they did. We are, after all, talking about UNC fans. But I admit I read that board regularly, and I haven't really seen that specifically. More than anything, I see their fans saying they don't want one-and-done players....even though that's an outright lie.

There's already a thread at THR about it. Ironically it wasn't started by a THR member, it was started by jchammock.

Completely agree with you...

I would like to explain why I started it.

I didn't start it to disrespect their program or disrespect anyone period. But just a few days prior to Roy's interview several of their posters and I were debating this actual discussion of Roy recruiting OAD's. Several of my buddies over there have argued with me that Roy doesn't recruit like that. And a couple have told me that if he ever started they would stop watching UNC basketball. This has been going on for a long time.

And like I said, just a few days ago my best bud over there tried to tell me that Roy only recruited a "Couple" of kids UK landed in which I called BS. His explanation was that Roy backed off all the others. And I have debated this topic with several of them for a long time. So I was just seeing if those posters were willing to finally admit it since their on coach confirmed it.

To be fair, a lot of their posters have said over this time that they wished Roy would recruit these kids. But several of them agreed that Roy backed off and they were fine with Roy's decession in doing so.

As far as me starting a thread there about this, it was never to disrespect their program. It was basically me proving my side of this debate was correct.

As far as THR and DI goes, I have made a lot of friends on both boards. I respect the hell out of these friends I've made. And I want talk trash about UNC here nor talk trash about Duke there. If I don't agree with someone I will be more than happy to debate that on whoevers board they're a fan of.

I don't know why my thread was deleted, I figure maybe a individual started trash talking and Mike, Jim, or BD locked it. They've always been fair to me and consider them friends. Just like I feel about Denn, DJ, and K-ville here.

And my favorite posters on both boards are usually the people that the other fanbase dislikes. That should tell you what kind of person I am. ;)

It was still there last evening and probably had 15-20 posts in it....maybe a few more. I guess that's one way to deal with things.

I went over and posted in a thread a few weeks back. I thought I was going to start posting there more after a long hiatus. I went back to check the thread I was posting in and all three of my, civil, posting had been erased. Very weak. Like I have said it is their board and their rules, but to not allow civil discussion with opposing views is pretty telling to what they want over there.

I do find it funny that they would erase a thread like this that proves some of the biggest blowhards over there wrong. Maybe they like their blowhards to represent who they are, even though they are a minority of their fan base.
