Pre-season preseason record prediction

When do you all think Duke will release the full schedule? I know they are waiting on the ACC to complete the conference side since the non conference is set.

I already have the 40-0 t-shirts ordered for all of us here!

36-4, and please let's have the losses happen early, maybe drop 2 preconference games and 2 in ACC play and go into the ACC tourney on a roll, and steamroll. Get to the FF, and anything is possible!

Blue tinted glasses firmly in place!!

To be honest, I just want a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, irrespective of losses.

My 9 questions for preseason.
1. How good is Cooper? We know he's good but how good? Is he Banchero? RJ? Zion? Will teams try to bully him like Flip? He does have a slight frame.
2. How good is Mal? I'm not as high as some. He will be good, a OAD, but how long will he take to figure it out? I don't care how good a pro he will be. Just remember how lost Lively and Mark looked at first. Brown at least gives us a small ball 5. I am expecting Lively, but remember Lively was mostly a non factor the first semester. He was injured some, but still.
3. How big a leap does Proctor make? He needs to toughen up a bit.
4. How big a leap does Foster make? He will have more pressure this year.
5. Can the transfers play like juniors/seniors? They are new to Duke.
6. Will Evans like limited minutes? I imagine he is in the rotation but not every game.
7. Is the Kon hype real? Doing it in practice is one thing, against Kansas and Kentucky is another.
8. Pressure will be on Jon and the team. The Cooper hype will be deafening. A few early defeats might be a good thing. This feels like our best chance for a title in a while, maybe since the Zion year.
9. Can we avoid key injuries at key times? This has killed us the last decade.

My thoughts to your burning questions...

1. How good is Cooper? We know he's good but how good? Is he Banchero? RJ? Zion? Will teams try to bully him like Flip? He does have a slight frame.

If he can be as good as RJ, then I would feel pretty good. RJ had a nice all around game where he played PG when Tre was injured. He had a triple double and I thought he was underappreciated.

I think Mal struggles with the speed of the game but all he has to do is play defense and rebound. If he only averages 5 and 5 with a block or two, he will help tremendously.

3. How big a leap does Proctor make? He needs to toughen up a bit.

This is a huge question mark. He has been soft at times and not been as consistent as we need. I think he is better this year than last year, but I’m not sure what that means yet.

4. How big a leap does Foster make? He will have more pressure this year.

If he stays healthy, I think he’ll make a nice leap. We know he can score but can he be a leader?

5. Can the transfers play like juniors/seniors? They are new to Duke.

I think the transfer play big in the first half of the season. I’m not sure if that will automatically translate to wins, but I think they pay dividends early.

6. Will Evans like limited minutes? I imagine he is in the rotation but not every game.

Evans will need to show he can hit big shots at this level. He may look like Brandon
Ingram but he’s not as good as him, especially this early in his college career. I think he plays two seasons at Duke.

7. Is the Kon hype real? Doing it in practice is one thing, against Kansas and Kentucky is another.

I can see him being a more athletic version of Mason Gillis. Kon is getting a lot of hype but we hear this often during the offseason or in practices. So not sure if that will translate to a hot start, but I can see him playing like Gillis, someone who can hit some three’s, have a high percentage at the foul line and not make too many mistakes.
I kind of liken him to Reed Sheppard, who was just a four star recruit and few knew that he could play that well right out of the gate. Although, I don’t think Kon will be as good as Sheppard, but I think he will be steady.

8. Pressure will be on Jon and the team. The Cooper hype will be deafening. A few early defeats might be a good thing. This feels like our best chance for a title in a while, maybe since the Zion year.

I thought we had a shot to win the title during K’s last season. That team had the eventual number 1 draft pick, and several upperclassmen. That said, Jon will have the pressure on him to win. He’s had back to back 27 win seasons, pretty good if you ask me, however, this team is better than his last two.

9. Can we avoid key injuries at key times? This has killed us the last decade.

I feel like injuries are going to happen, but this team is a little deeper with talent, so we should be able to withstand some injuries. But, they will definitely happen.

@johnl1219 thanks for the detailed answer. I know I tend to ramble. I'm actually pretty quiet IRL. We do seem to have better depth. If Kon is a consistent impact freshman this team could go far. In practice Jon was pushing Mal hard to be more assertive, so he must view that as crucial to our success.

We have shooters but we need the front court to be very effective as the should given Dukes size .

Mal as a soph would be a monster. But we probably only get him one year.
I think Pat could surprise, but he may need to wait his turn unless Mal gets injured. Brown seems like a key guy to keep healthy, esp. If Mal takes time.

Absolutely, I think your questions were on the money. If Kon and Mal just play decent, then we have a chance to be great. I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to try and predict points per game per player, but it might be fun to see what others come up with.

You've got to figure that both Proctor and Foster can average 10PPG each and Flagg should be around 15-16 PPG. Then Brown should be able to score around 10 PPG as well and Mal should be able to get at least 5 PPG. That's 50 PPG from the "starters".

If Kon and Gillis can each average 5 PPG, together that's another double digit scorer, then if Evans and James also average around 5 PPG each, that gives you 70 points each game.

Duke average 72 PPG in Jon's first season and 78 PPG last season. So defense will definitely be needed if this team doesn't score near 80 points per game.

Just for context, Duke average 80 PPG in K's last season.

That seems conservative. Bump Proctor to 11ppg, Kon to 7ppg, Sion to 6ppg.
I also don't know any Duke fans IRL, so I have to talk about it here, ha. My dad is a casual fan, but usually doesn't know the players until February.

You may be right. Kon does seem like the real deal. My only concern is we never play good D in the summer, so shooters like Baker tend to look awesome. Rule #1 is stay healthy, so I don't want to see our guys recklessly flying around trying to block shots in summer. There was one Kon drive I think Cooper could have rejected if he really wanted to. Kon does use his body well on drives; he always seems to remain vertical.

With the bump in PPG, that would give Duke about 74 PPG. I think that's pretty realistic and may be a point or two low.

Rrspectfully, I think y'all are off on Kon. I'd be very surprised if he isn't a double digit scorer.
I do think it's possible for Kon to be around 9 PPG so averaging double digits isn't out of the question. I was trying to be a little conservative. If Kon just hits a three and two foul shots, he would be at 5 PPG easily.

The thing I like with Kon over TJ Power, Kon looks more athletic. Power couldn't dribble and couldn't guard a street lamp.

I can barely remember what Power looked like. He's skilled, but so slow. I think he will be decent in college but not much more. His ceiling is probably Hurt, but my goodness Hurt was so much better, at least thus far. I get Hurt wasn't a great defender, but he was a scoring machine his soph. year. I liked him a lot.

Certainly not a bad mindset my friend. Conservative expectations, hopeful/optimistic aspirations.

Was at Barnes and Noble and saw the first college basketball preview. We were 7th or 8th. North Carolina was one spot ahead of us, likely because they return more. Teams ahead of us were Kansas, UConn, Houston, Alabama, Gonzaga. Kentucky was in the low 20s

I hope UConn isn't a contender again. Hurley has made winning look too easy.

I'm just not getting the Tar Heel love.
They are returning 3 guards, and RJ Davis is an all American. They obviously need to shore up the 5. The Vandy forward ended the season on a scoring tear. If he continues that, they could be a problem. My guess is sweet 16. They need a solid year from 6-10 center Washington. I think we are better, but not by much. Also the 6-7 GT transfer is decent. They also have 2 top 15 freshman. I usually study their roster to see how we match up.

I’m not worried about UNC . It’s always a dog fight . I will say this though . If Dukes bench can just score then they need to worry about us . I think our last couple of games are bench scoring has been way down compared to theirs .
