It is a slow morning for me and I know this has been discussed before but here is my top three teams by position. Include your fourth choice. I am sure I probably left someone out.
PG. Hurley , Irving and Jason Williams( Jones )
SG. Dawkins ,Groat and Redick. ( Mullins )
SF. Grant Hill, Heyman and Winslow( Dunleavy)
PF. Battier , Banks and Parker. ( Ferry)
Center. Laetner , Gminski and Jah ( Sheldon Williams)

I'd definitely replace one of the top 3 (probably Gminski) with Elton Brand. The kid was NPOY and #1 pick off a 38-2 Duke team that went undefeated in the ACC regular season, won the conference title, and romped its way to the national championship game. I don't think he was as naturally talented as Jah, but he'd be #2 on my center list after Laettner.

I think the only "no-brainers" are probably Laettner and Hill. I think Battier is probably a "no-brainer" as well. His senior year he won pretty much everything you can possibly win as an individual and as a team (All-American, NPOY, NDPOY, All-ACC, etc. - Team: ACC Champs, National Champs). I'm not sure another player in the history of the game has had the same kind of year, particularly when you throw in the Defensive Player of the Year. Really remarkable for Shane.

The PG spot is a particularly tough one to choose between Hurley and Williams. SG is also tough with Dawkins and Redick.

1st Team:
PG - Hurley (all-time assists leader, 2 NC's)
SG - Redick (all-time scoring leader and shooter)
SF - Hill (probably the best player K has coached)
PF - Battier (see above)
C - Laettner (no explanation needed)

2nd Team:
PG - J. Williams
SG - J. Dawkins
SF - K. Singler (Duke leader in minutes played, one of 4 w/ 2000+ points & 1000+ rebounds)
PF - E. Brand
C - S. Williams (Okafor would be a no-brainer if he were around longer to accumulate more)

Glad you brought this up. I went back to research Gman stats. I forgot he entered Duke when he was only 16.
His first team won only about 50 percent of their games. For his career Gman was three time AA. He was Academic AA. When he left Duke he was career leader in points, rebounds and blocked shots.
He shot 84 % from the line his senior year. I still think Duke would have won national title if Foster had played junk defense on Goose Givens instead of staying in a zone letting him shoot midrange jumpers all game.I think I will leave Gman where he is and replace Jah with Elton.
My criteria for selections included contributions while at Duke plus having strong careers in the NBA.

With all due respect to your opinion aah555 do you know who Mike Gminski was and just how good he was as a Blue Devil? Take a look at his stats. All of them. He would have been my center ahead of Laettner who to me was more of a 4. There were great Duke players before coach K came and the OP included some. Really this list is impossible to create but I will give you my personal favorites at the positions.

SF Grant Hill
PF Christian Laettner
C Mike Gminski
SG Johnny Dawkins
PG Bobby Hurley

High respect and high honorable mention to J.J. Redick, Shane Battier, Sheldon Williams, Art Heyman, Jon Sheyer, Wojo, Chris Collins, Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith, Danny Ferry,Tommy Amaker, Bob Verga, Dick Groat , Trajon Langdon, Gene Banks and Jim Spanarkel are based on the fact that all these players and more stayed through their senior years. I'm not trying to be a old hard butt. 40 years from now if this world still exist and there is still Duke basketball every player we have listed will be forgotten. Please forgive me for my consistent support of pre Coach K basketball. All of you know how much I love and support him. He elevated Duke basketball to heights I never imagined it could be. If it weren't for him most of us would not have developed the good respect and comradely we have here.I am a pure Duke fan through and through and I feel that those who don't know the history of Duke athletics through no part of your own should be reminded from time to time. That's why jimlsumner is the most valuable poster we have because he knows Duke. I've ranted enough and every player listed deserves to be the best. It just so happens that we have so many players that could be considered the best 5. I can't help it. I'm a Duke fan. It's my nature. Bless my heart:D:D OFC

Here are a few facts. Elton Brand was a consensus NPOY at Duke (i.e., he won every major NPOY award his soph. year). At no point in Mike G's career was he even considered a consensus first team AA (let alone NPOY). In the year where Elton Brand was NPOY and ACCPOY, Duke went 38-2 and literally went 19-0 against the ACC. In Mike G's two best years 79-80 where he did receive some national recognition and ACCPoy, Duke finished with 8 and 9 losses respectively and didn't advance to the final four. When Elton Brand left college for the NBA, he was the #1 pick. Mike G was the #7 pick.

Mike G was a very good player who obviously accumulated better aggregate stats over the course of a 4-year career. But in college (and frankly in the NBA), there's little doubt that Brand was more highly regarded in his era than Mike G was in his era.

Great lists by everyone. There are just so many special Duke players. My locks (in order), Laettner ('nuff said), G. Hill, and Hurley. The rest I could spend weeks on swapping in and out of the starting lineup.
