Old Games

Bored so I'm watching Duke/Maryland from 2000. Thoughts to come. Think it was when Williams and Boozer were freshman.
1. I just switched to Duke Virginia in 2000. We lost to Maryland, and I hate watching us lose lol.
2. Carrawell averaging nearly 18 a game? Wow.
3. Even as a freshman, J Will was really good. Strong PG.
4. Odd to see Virginia unranked. Bennett has done a super job there.
5. Boozer is already a load down low as a freshman. His only back up seems to be Christensen, so he didn't have much help.
6. Little Michael Savarino watching his first game at Cameron. Don't you feel old?
7. Duke has won 17 straight games after losing the first 2. And they are up 20 here. They are starting 2 freshman in Boozer and Williams, which was shocking then but has become the norm at Duke lately.
8. Senior Carrawell was really good. 18 a game and a great defender.
9. J Will with the no look pass for a Horvath layup. We haven't had a pg that good since. Maybe Kyrie. (I'd take Williams)
10. I love Bent Musburger. Dickie V was raving about Iverson and Brent basically called him a ballhog lol.
11. Duke up 65 to 33 at the half. When was the last time we were this dominant? I like Casey Sanders but his inability to catch a ball is perplexing.

Old game of the week. Duke Virginia from the 1998 ACC tournament.
1. Checked ahead to make sure we won, ha. I don't watch games we lost.
2. Brand with a strong basket and block. he was a monster as a freshman, and he was coming off a broken foot. He may have been POY if he didn't get injured. Brand with another basket.
3. Chris Burgess in the game for 5 seconds and an and one for Virginia.
4. Hot take: Avery should have started that year. I like Wojo, but he gave us nothing on offense. And Wayne Turner destroyed him in the Elite Eight. Avery in the game for 10 seconds and scores. Avery scores again, and he was a good defender. And Avery hits another 3.
5. This team is deep. We have subbed in Avery. Burgess, Carrawell and Chappell.
6. Burgess with a FT airball. He is 24 out of 70 on FTs. Yikes.
7. McCloud really hurting us. I know he was a pro, but he is not getting it done.
8. Last shot of the half, Wojo gives it to Brand at the 3 point line for a miss. Ugh.

Watching Carolina at Duke from 2015. Will have some observations.
1. Interesting starting line up of Cook, Jones, Winslow, Jefferson and Okafor.
2. Winslow and Jefferson look great as a tandem. It amazes me Winslow is not a better pro. Outside of Zion and Tatum he looks more NBA ready than any of our recent OADs. Winslow with the alley oop he has 6 already.

Okay back to Duke, Carolina 2015. I started last week but then had to work.
1. Freshman Tyus is better than soph. Tre Jones.
2. I forgot how good Cook was. He's hit three 3's in 10 minutes, and made some great passes. He's way ahead of Roach, and it's not even close. Roach may get there, but not this year.

2. ??? You forgot how good Quinn was? Also unfair to compare a senior Quinn to a soph Jeremy who hasn’t played yet.

I hear you. My point is if we're gunning for National championship, this backcourt is way ahead of ours. But they may yet improve. The announcers mention the Okafor effect, as he effects the game in so many ways. Banchero could be that for us.

Okay back to the game, which keeps being interrupted with phone calls. NC at Duke 2015.
1. Tyus Jones shooting 42 percent from 3 in ACC play. Wow.
2. I know we make jokes, but Meeks is huge. Jefferson looks like a kid next to him.
3. I've been impressed with Okafor. He's playing good defense, and even dived for a loose ball. And he's great on offense.
4. Jefferson was the perfect role player. Does all the little things.
5. 15 minutes to go. Okafor hobbled, UNC takes the lead. Duke on the ropes, down 3.
6. UNC seems so relaxed. Hate to say it, but they never seem one bit intimidated in Cameron.
7. Despite all the one and dones, it is somewhat amusing that Grayson Allen, the guy who stayed 4 years, is arguably the best pro.
8. UNC up 8 with 6 minutes to go. We are on the ropes. Down 9 with 2:38.

Watching another game. Duke at Wisconsin 2015. Started watching us at NC State and then realized we lost that one lol.
1. We are ranked 4th. They are ranked 2nd. Hostile crowd and great test for a young team.
2. Frank the Tank was a really good college player. Him and Okafor doing battle.
3. Duke had 9 MacDonald's all americans, which must be a record. 8 when RS got kicked off.
4. Suliman playing well. Plumlee giving good bench minutes. He's a big dude.
5. Grayson Allen standing and clapping after a Duke make. I think this is important. He was a MacDonald's AA, barely played, yet is still cheering for his team. And he was ready when they called his number.
6. Wisconsin must really hate us. This was their 99 team, their best team ever. And we beat them twice. With 3 freshman starters.

#6 They learned that from Roy. Huckleberry was scared of nothing (except temporarily Ncaa compliance officers but he realized eventually that the fix was in and plus Wanda was squirtin a little Jack into her nanner puddin recipe)
# 4 enjoyed watching Jefferson

Jefferson was a bit of a unicorn. Top 20 player, Kentucky really wanted him. Nova too. Stayed 5 years and became the ultimate role player. One of my favorite Duke players. Seemed on the verge of stardom before he got injured.

Watching Duke North Carolina. 1998 ACC Championship. I don't think I've seen this one.

Finally rewatching Duke UConn 1999.
1. Langdon with a turnover and getting his shot blocked.
2. They are double teaming Brand. And Langdon cannot shoot off the dribble. This is hard to watch.
3. Duke up 9-2. What can go wrong? (I watch this so you don't have to)
4. Langdon picks up his dribble, gets a TO.
5. Maggette scores. Please leave this guy in. This is a physical game.

I hear you brother. I just ran out of 99 games to watch. Me and my dad watched it. When Langdon drove, at the end, I kneeled in front of the TV, screaming "pass it to Avery!" Alas.

I tried to tell you a while back not to watch that sh—. Worse than the 94 Arkansas game, you should watch that one too while you’re at it just for sh— and giggles

Haha. Yes. It's been a while. I'm sure I cannot watch the last minute. I am just curious as to what went wrong. Not sure if we went out the night before, or UConn seems to know what we will do. Sorry to bring up a sore spot. But I must know.

Watching Duke UCLA from 1998. I watched this one a while ago but it's really entertaining.

Watching Duke at Michigan from 12/91. The Fab 5.
Rose with 3 fouls in the first half.
Billy Packer is insufferable. He is gushing over Michigan.
Webber is really good. Michigan also has 4-5 upperclassmen to go with the fab 5.
Duke up 10 at the half.
Hurley in the first half. 10 points, 4 assists 0 turnovers.
Webber is one of the best freshman I've ever seen. Wow.
duke taking 4 charges!
Grant Hill with a couple of nasty dunks over people.
Webber outplaying Laettner.
Michigan cuts it to one.
Michigan up 3 with the ball, one minute left.
Overtime!
Michigan chokes as they always do. Duke wins. Hurley with 26 points. I forgot how good Hurley was.

Accn was showing 90 ga tech game early this am . First half was amazing. That team hadn’t quite come into the title teams. No Grant Thomas didn’t o play much. B Davis was more of a role player but you had Alaa A, Brickey, and Phil Henderson. Brickey was out the ga tech game; teams more athletic than I remember Arkansas game in the final four cool one to pull up as well from 90
