Old Games

A 43-7 run. Put the screws to em. Me too, it just isn't Cameron without them.

One of the most impressive displays of team basketball I have seen from a Duke team. Locked in is an understatement to describe what they were able to do against a damn good Notre Dame team. That was the first time that season I truly thought we could win a title.

Well, I thought we could win it after our unbeaten Non-Con, but the back to back losses to NC State and Miami really shook that belief. But once Sulaimon was gone they seemed to find their stride again. Didn't lose again the rest of the regular season. But then of course, ND played out of their minds in the first half of our tourney matchup. Oh well, I like the way that season ended anyway.

Great second half of the Duke Florida 1999 game. Avery hit 7 threes in that game. Maggette got T'd up for slapping the backboard after a dunk, then had a put back dunk a minute later. Florida was good; they had Haslem and Mike Miller. Domzalski was another big body off the bench. Gonna watch the Duke St. John's 99 game next.
Maggette with dunk number 4.
Avery and Langdon with 12 threes between them.
We had 100 points with 6 minutes left. Against Florida.

Duke by 2 at the half against the Ron Artest St John's team of 99. Maggette with 8 points at the half; why isn't this guy starting again? Artest was really good.
Wow Carrawell really stepped up late against SJU.
Nate James makes 2 FT when Duke up one with 10 seconds left.
Artest 3. Overtime. Brand has fouled out.
Battier charge and 3 point play. Battier second charge. Game over.

This one is for all the old farts like me, who recall success in Duke Basketball before Coach K. Its also college basketball's first-ever "Airball Chant" ever in 1979. Thanks Rich Yonakor- great it was at expense of a Carowhina player. Duke won 47-40, and this is one of those games that cried out for a shot clock. Chokin' Dean tried to hold the ball. Halftime score was Duke-7, Cheats-0.

The first air ball chant reminds me that I read somewhere the other day that our very own Nolan Smith’s dad Derek is credited with popularizing the high five (not David Puddy on Seinfeld). Back in his playing days at ul. If this is common knowledge forgive. I’d just never heard it before

Thanks. I’ve always had a fondness for all things 70s. 7. 0. At the half. Seriously? And we’re supposed to kiss this guys ring?

This may also have been the first game for which students camped outside of CIS. My back still hurts from sleeping in the entrance way without a sleeping bag.

Thats Dedication with a capital "D" for DUKE my friend!

Hart. I know dean smith obviously abused the situation. But do you hink most teams shot sooner later or about the same as now without the clock. From what I’ve seen of games from that era it seems about the same dean smiths freak show notwithstanding
Think that the Some Duke teams during that time averaged nearly ninety five points per game

Plus, there was no 3 point line.
KD I copied Topps and GAAP too. You asked a great question, and they supplemented it with good info:

I watched just as much ball back then (or listened) because obviously we didnt have all the hoops tv coverage we do now. KD to me, the college game seemed just as fast-paced (ACC anyway), except as when you noted- Dean pulled it back with say a lead and 6-10 mins left in a game when he led. He usually did that to pull the other team out of zone, and it really slowed the game down. Generally however you didnt even think the game needed a shot clock- teams still loved to run.

Topps is right, there were some Vic Bubas and Bill Foster teams that put plenty of points on the board, and Duke players like Art Heyman, Bob Verga, Tate Armstrong would put it up in a heartbeat. GAAP made another good observation about the 3pt line as well. That trey makes for some higher scores now, but nevertheless teams would generally fire away pretty quickly.

It was fun watching some of that 47-40 game, so thanks for that. I think that was the first time I saw the 2-3 zone defense that has become so popular. Of course, Kentucky found the weakness in it didn't they 😟

Just when I had forgotten about Goose Givens, you have to bring him up. Thanks.

If Duke wins in78 it would be interesting to see how different it would have all played out. A lot of different scenarios Foster may have stayed longer and k may be who knows where and duke would have one trophy not 5. Who the hell knows though?

Not a Duke game, but it's a Carolina loss! This is one of Dean's best teams to not win it. Still can't believe that team didn't win the ACC tourney or at least make it to the Final Four. For all the junk people talk about our freshmen heavy teams in '18 and '19, this team had a Junior Jordan, Senior Sam Perkins, Sophomore Brad Daugherty, Senior Matt (greatest UNC coach) Doherty, and a Freshman Kenny Smith leading the way and still they faltered. That team was stacked and didn't make it past the Sweet Sixteen. One of Knight's best coaching jobs in my opinion.

There are no guarantees in a one and done tournament

And one of Cheatin' Dean Smith's worst!

Watching that game I couldn't believe how much more talent UNC had over Indiana, and just about everyone else that year not named Houston or Georgetown. Crazy that they didn't make it to at least the final four. For all the shit I hear from UNC fans over Zion and RJ...they went further than that team and won a championship(ACC), that '84 team with Jordan did worse.

Watching Duke Maryland 99. I'll give my thoughts soon.
1. Steve Francis is really good.
2. Battier and Carrawell doing the small things.
3. Langdon struggling again.
4. Brand was a beast. Even when he struggles, he wears teams down.
5. Nate James a weapon off the bench.

Watching Clemson and Duke from the 1998 ACC Tournament.
1. Avery really struggling. He really improved from year one to year two.
2. Ditto Burgess.
3. Does Wojo ever look to score?
3. Langdon playing really well in the first half.
4. Duke down 10 near the half.
5. Duke with a late run down 5 at the half.
6. Avery tips in his own miss at the buzzer to win.

Watching Duke Cincinnati 1999. Yes I know we lost that game but I will give my thoughts.
1. Burgess with the start. He had 16! rebounds the previous game.
2. Cincinnati had Kenyon Martin and was very athletic. Battier and Maggette were both sick but played. Duke down early 23-11.
3. It's now 31-15. Yikes.
