Old Games

Watching Duke Cincinnati 1999. Yes I know we lost that game but I will give my thoughts.
1. Burgess with the start. He had 16! rebounds the previous game.
2. Cincinnati had Kenyon Martin and was very athletic. Battier and Maggette were both sick but played. Duke down early 23-11.
3. It's now 31-15. Yikes.
Wasn’t that hame on super late east coast time? Like midnight start? Obviously it was in Alaska but i remember i woke up and found out we lost. I was a soph in hs haha

Watching Duke at Maryland 99. This team fascinates me.
Langdon off to a hot start.
Profit is good. What happened to him?
Carrawell is like Moore with a jump shot. (still time to change that)
Duke traveled twice on one possession. Then Langdon awkwardly draws a foul. The Duke gets all the calls thing...if I wasn't a Duke fan...

Btw Carrawell didn’t have a jumper until his Junior year

It STILL pains me that the '99 squad didn't win it all.

That team had few, if any, weaknesses. A true juggernaut.

The only weakness was there was no backup for Avery if he got injured. Langdon was serviceable, but he was not a playmaker.

Watching Duke vs UCLA from 98. I will have my thoughts. Brand's freshman year at Cameron. Dickie V raving about diaper dandys Brand and Battier.
1. Musburger calling the game. One of the goats.
2. This UCLA team is stacked. Baron Davis, Kris Johnson, JR Henderson, Tobey Baily, and Earl Watson. Brand's first game back from injury.
3. Tobey Baily. Senior guard who won the national championship as a stud freshman. Let that sink in.
4. Langdon with 8 early points. When he is on he's so smooth.
5. Battier playing center as a freshman. He's so locked in.
6. Burgess with the putback dunk. And then a block. What might have been.
7. Avery with a 3 and a steal in his first minute. No offense Wojo but he's already better.

One of the most enjoyable games I ever watched. Didn't we score like 120 or something?

Avery just hit another 3. Damn he's good. Coach Carrawell with a 3.
I’ll have to check that out. Need to watch that 99 UConn title game again. Know Brand made a couple of horrible decisions dribbling the ball the length of the court and it’s always seemed like Avery had a poor game so it’d help in fairness to him to watch and remember how good he was. If we win in 99 maybe we don’t in 01 Hate to sound like that guy but the refs let UConn get awful physical and we never really adjusted. Not that it’s easy to when you’re getting mugged

I don't rewatch games we lost ha.

Me either. Never have, at least not that I can recall.

I've actually never seen us lose a game in person, and I've been to 20-25, mostly conference games (i.e. that wouldn't be worth mentioning if all the games i attended were against Lower Meat Flute State or whomever).

Burgess reminds me of Bolden. You can see glimpses of the talent, but he could never put it all together. He was actually better than Bolden as a sophomore.

Both Burgess and his dad thought he should be playing the 4 position. I was at a game once and my seats were upper level but right where the team came on and off the floor. At half time I saw Burgess' father with Coach K and they were discussing something and I couldn't hear a thing they said. It was his soph year and of course he trandsferred to I believe Utah. I tried to follow his career and it seems Utah used him the way Coach K did. Had some talent and if he had stayed with the program he would have ended up being a lor better player than he was. Just my opinion. OFC

I’ll never watch or get over that ‘99 loss. That team was dominant. Ugghh

We may have won it all in 98 if Brand didn't get hurt. He came back but probably wasn't 100 percent.

I don't know. Avery had a really good year. He is certainly better than Roach, at least two years in. But he was badly outplayed in the national championship game. Brand seemed to have trouble with UConn's big center as well. I think U Conn was just a bad match up for us.

Better than roach!? I mean no disrespect to Roach, but Avery was a STUD.

Avery would have been the best guard in the country as a junior. Him and Maggette broke my heart. But as I've said before those freshman getting so much PT in 2000 allowed us to be dominant the next year. Elton is my favorite Duke big man by far. I've never really cared for Laettner to be honest. Something about him was off putting. I know he was pretty mean to Hurley. But he was great no doubt.

It really was. The refs called it like an old Big East game which was in their favor. They allowed Voskul sp to mug Brand and Moore and Hamilton played the game Of their lives

End of my work week. Cracking open a cold one and watching Maryland at Duke from 1999. Last time I watched Duke at Maryland. Thoughts to come. We were #2, they were #6.
1. Avery threading the needle to Brand for a dunk. The A man to the B man, as Dickie V says.
2. Battier with a charge and then a steal and a layup. Warrior.
3. It is hard to describe the impact Brand has on everything. He is a load; yet mobile. He allows guys like Battier and Carrawell to roam around. If Burgess was the player he was ranked as in high school Brand would have been even better. We stopped getting pushed around the second Brand suited up for us.
4. Maggette really struggling. No one's a bigger Maggette fan than me but he had an advantage over today's one and dones in that he didn't start and didn't have to be the man right away.
5. Carrawell with 8 points halfway through the first half. A top 10 high school guy as a role player.
6. Battier with a steal and a dunk. Then a jump shot. And then a 3. How the heck did this team not win?

We're in the off-season people and I am already chomping at the bit to see some college basketball. I love watching old games and I know there are many of you out there who do as well. So, I thought I'd start a thread where we could post some of our favorite games or memories of games. Something to distract us all from the monotony of life without college basketball. I'll start with a personal favorite of mine:

I know it’s not unpredictable by any stretch but the 91 unlv game us when Christian signed his nanw into the turf and went balls out the greatest performance I have witnessed

I seldom do these days but when I was younger instead of crying in my beer over failed romances, I would drink a bunch of jack and cokes and watch big duke losses on old vhs tapes and throw stuff around the man cave just for sh— and giggles

Watching the second half of Maryland Duke from 99. I never finished the game last week. I'll have my thoughts.
1. Duke up 10 at the half. Vitale mentions Boozer, who is down to Duke, UCLA, and St. John's, my alma mater. SJU could have won it all with Boozer and Artest.
2. Langdon hit 2 three's, Duke up 15. On a loaded Maryland team that won it all the following year.
3. Nate James with 4 straight points. Forgotten role player.
4. Battier with 23. Slowly becoming a star.
5. Avery with a 3. Then Maggette with a dunk 85-56. On a top 10 team. Brand with another and one.
6. Francis shoves Battier to the ground. Sorry, Shane is just better than you pal.

Maryland didn’t win in 2000, Michigan State did. Maryland won in 2002 after we won in 2001 though, if that’s what you were referring to. But you’re right about that 1999 MD team, they were stacked.

Battier just hit a 3. He's got 23. They have 6 guys in double figures. They are up 23 on Maryland. It's just silly how good they were.
