Official game day thread- Duke vs ND

Cooper was fantastic, but we went to bird watching, resulting in the others playing defensive. Hope they learn from this because early on our ball movement was almost as good as theirs.
Notre Dame had to play out of their mind just to have a chance.

I didn’t have a problem with the double tech with Maluach. Either it’s a total no call, or that.

Wow. It didn’t look bad at all and he didn’t even have ice on it. Looked in good spirits so this is odd. We all know he will miss some time though when Jon is vague with these kinds of things.
Yeah, I thought he was being held out as a precaution. But if it's something more serious then I hope Big Pat is ready for some burn. Our bench has regressed of late outside of Gillis. Foster is a shell of himself. Brown's toe was clearly bothering him even before this happened. And Evans has come back down to earth. So my biggest concern about this team is depth and Brown's health. People said Brown was walking around the locker room and seemed fine though. So maybe Jon is being cautious with his words before there's anything official.

Brown being out for an extended period would not be good, but if it’s a few games we should be okay. Gillis has played well and I still like Evan’s to get minutes. If he’s on, he’s an automatic 3 waiting to happen.

By far the biggest concern is Foster. Like wtf happened to him? Big time regression that’s for sure.

Duke beat reporters said Brown seemed fine. So I'm hoping Jon is just being cautious and this ends up not being that bad. We need him. Gillis has become who we all expected him to be. Evans is streaky, but need him. I'm also very concerned about Caleb. I think his confidence is broken at this point.

I thought foster turned a corner in the smu game. He was attacking and playing instinctively. Hope that comes back soon. I sometimes wonder if he has trouble balancing looking for his shot vs setting up the offense. And today the offense was set things up for cooper. He was the hot hand but as others have said that can hurt an offense.

All the talk on here about Duke going to Cooper too much today is crazy. He was in the zone today (11-14 from the field and 16-17 from the line). Do we want to move the ball and look pretty, but have more empty possessions? Our perimeter defense was the issue, but you have to give ND credit. They just wouldn’t go away and not many teams will shoot that well from the 3 pt line.

Ugh. Hopefully it's very minor. We have Miami at home next then at BC. After BC we have a week break and play at Wake on the 25th. Lucky we have capable backups compared to years past. Time for them to step up

I’ve been impressed with Big Pat. I think he can give Maluach a break without hurting us.
He plays within himself and knows his role well.

I say our defensive efficiency drops over the next month with Brown out. And I think the dream of finishing undefeated in conference play died today. But again, as long as he's back in a month and everyone else stays healthy we have a shot in the Big Dance.

Nah it won’t. He’s great at what he does and I want him back fully healthy but we’ve already went up with him playing less minutes

My issue was the other guys stood around. Whether that was by design or not, I don’t know. The result was hardly anyone else did anything, and we looked like we were playing to not lose.

Combine that with the fact Notre Dame had nothing to lose, makes for a tight finish.

Same 91, I believe the main thing with Big Pat is him gaining more confidence by extending his minutes.

I think we can all agree we do not want the offense to turn stagnant/one dimensional.

The ball movement at the start of the game today was magnificent which led to the quick start. More of this ball movement PLEASE

The coaching staff using the mismatch advantage today with no one on ND being able to defend Flagg is fine with me.

Imo the Duke Coaching Staff has done a Great Job in exposing mismatches.

Georgia Tech - Knup and Mal’s pick n roll game in the 2nd half

Notre Dame - Flagg

Great to have Coop with his 42 but it doesn't get the others into the flow of the game.
Yes, it’s a 2-edged sword when he goes off like that. The other guys definitely turn into spectators on O. But that doesn’t explain our defensive letdown (saying that, you have to credit ND for hitting 3’s like they were in a game of H-O-R-S-E, including that ridiculous bank shot). They seemed to lose the intensity they came out with. But I expect Jon and his staff get that and will fix it. All-in-all, an inexpensive lesson for the team to understand they have to keep the foot on the pedal for 40 minutes. I just hope Brown is ok. We should be able to sit him for a few games, if necessary, but need him for the stretch.

This might seem like a negative take, but based on history when Brown comes back he won't be 100%. He hasn't been the same guy before this latest injury. Silver lining is Pat gets more minutes which will help later this year and next. Obviously we can beat the Notre Dames of the world without Brown (their frontcourt was bad, my how the ACC has fallen). Can we beat Illinois type teams without Brown is the question. Seems like injury is our greatest foe the last 15 years. Foster does not seem 100 percent either.

I think so chris especially since USC went into Illinois yesterday and dominated them in the 2nd half. Illinois sustained a Quad 3 loss as a result.

Brown is A Great Defender, but Duke is Deep, Next Man Up.

Mal has the higher ceiling and I’ve always said he needs to play in that 25-27 mpg range for Duke to go to a final four. However, Brown is such a great 2nd piece if he’s out for months, we will be in trouble. We are going to run into a tough, veteran, scrappy team in March which Brown is made for.
