Official game day thread- Duke vs Miami II

I had the absolute pleasure of being at both the Illinois and Miami games live, the only two times I have watched the team in person. This team is incredibly special. The way guys step up, root for each other, stay engaged, and the development of the Freshmen have been something I have never seen I think. The Tyus, Jah, Winslow squad started fast and kept going all the way, but that team wasn't as deep and physical as this team. We go a legit 10 deep with all of our players, its almost crazy. This team was fun to watch as they just meticulously picked the two Orange teams apart!

This post is not meant to throw any shade at Proctor. He has always been one of my favorite Blue Devils during his time at Duke these last 3 seasons. He went through the sophomore slump but I never gave up on him. He will play in the NBA.

For context,

He gave donuts across the board in the Elite 8 loss to NC State last March, shooting 0-9 from the field, 0-5 from 3, and he didn't attempt a single free throw in 30 minutes of action. Tyrese was the only starter held scoreless in that game.

Proctor Provides Leadership being a Junior and has been Playing Great this Season, Especially the last month. He and James are Duke's Best Perimeter Defenders.

Proctor currently is averaging

11.8 points/game: 3rd highest on the team
3.2 rebounds/game: 6th highest on the team
2.3 assists/game: 4th highest on the team
.8 steals/game: 5th highest on the team
Shooting 43.7% from the field: 9th highest on the team
Shooting 75.5% from the free throw line: 6th highest on the team
Shooting 40.8% from 3: Tied with James for 2nd best on the team both behind Evans.

Foster is playing better recently and is no scrub. Hope he gets the starting nod while Proctor is out and Evans continues to Embrace the 6th Man Role.

Hope Proctor returns at 100% for Duke

Good post. I remember vividly last year in the Elite 8 Proctor was awful, we were up 6 early in the 2nd half and he missed back to back wide open three's, I knew then we could be in trouble. I also remember his freshman year against Tennessee, he was great and maybe our only guy who had a good game.

Personally I don't think the numbers tell the whole story on Proctor.
Other teams respect his 3-point shooting much more than James or Foster. This gives Cooper and Kon more space to operate. The floor is going to shrink when we play James/Foster together.
He is much taller than it appears on TV, and he has really long arms. This allows him to be an elite defender and a perfect foil to Sion on the perimeter, whereas Sion is all bulk and strength, Proctor has the length.
He appears to be our vocal leader. Watch during free throws when we huddle, Proctor is the one barking in the huddle usually.

If Proctor is out, I agree in starting Foster, at least for the FSU game at home and see how he does. I think Evans off the bench is an insane weapon that no other team in the country can match. We can win it all without Proctor, but I think we would be underdogs against an Auburn or Houston now. Staying positive he will be back in a couple weeks though.

Agreed DukeDallas. I think there are a lot of Leaders on this Duke Team though in their own way if it makes sense. Flagg steps up and does what needs to be done in crucial moments. Knuepple is Flagg's Robin on the offensive side of the court. Proctor and James are the 1-2 punch guarding the opposition's best perimeter players. Maluach/Ngonba/Flagg/James are the rim protectors. Brown is the team's Secretary of Defense. Evans is Duke's Super 6th Man and Energizer Bunny. Gillis is Duke's Glue Guy, he can score from the 3, give Flagg a breather, and defend at a high level. Ngongba scores inside the interior when Duke needs him to. James/Brown/Proctor/Gillis are the Blue Devils Vets. Foster is Duke's combo guard off the bench.

Most Balanced Duke Team I've Seen play for One Another
