Official game day thread- THE final four- Duke vs Houston

Think this was one of the best chances for us to win #6 and we blew it. It's hard to win it all and even harder when you have 3-4 freshman who are the main part of your rotation and playing against 22- 24 year olds. Unfortunately nothing will change with the way we recruit. It's been like that for the last few years. We put out great NBA players but unfortunately we only get those great future NBA players for only a year.

Shooting 50% free throws down the stretch for a guard is inexcusable. Even their big man who shoots 60% made both of his toward the end
Hey I’m with you but it’s wild that he’s gone down so much lately. Our 7’2 center shot 80% tonight. Better than proctor. In fact he finishes the year at 78%. 10% better than a junior guard.

Believe it or not Tyrese was 80% until recently I believe. What’s crazy is he was 87% freshman year. He’s gone down soph and junior years finishing at 68%. Just wild

My final top 10 of the year. I would like to address the players and the coach, in case anyone reads this. Heartbreaking loss.
1. Coach Jon: I loved you as a player and I love you as our coach. You seem like a good man and a terrific coach. Thank you for this season and you will learn from this.
2. Cooper Flagg: You were the best player in the country this year, and it was a pleasure watching you. You represented Duke in the best possible way, and I will cheer for you in the NBA.
3. Kon: As the son of a coach your fundamentals amazed me. You exceeded all our expectations and no way we make the FF without you. I will cheer for you too at the next level.
4. M. Brown: thank you for giving us your all this year. You played through injury and I really hope you return to lead Duke next year.
5. Tyrese: I get the feeling you are moving on but hope you will stay. Having you as our senior leader next year would be huge.
6. Mason: thank you for coming here and providing leadership to our young team. You will be a success in life.
7. Sion: your physicality really helped us this year, and I enjoyed what you brought to the team. You too have a bright future.
8. Caleb: you persevered through some hard times and injuries and really helped the team down the stretch. I hope you return.
9. Pat: it was a pleasure watching you develop. You will do big things next year.
10. Evans: please return to Duke. You will be one of our go to guys.
4 and 10 are big time important

Just an infuriating and incredibly painful loss.

We were soft with the ball giving up too many turnovers that last 6-7 minutes. Proctor, Sion, and Kon all drove and either just lost it or let it get blocked. Have to do better.

Got to say, Proctor shot terribly. In some ways, the game was on his shoulders. He just did not come through. He is not good enough for the moment. You can see he doesn't have confidence to nail it. How many open 3s did he miss? Painful. He's been really solid at times but you could see he just was not relaxed as a shooter. He's not really a shooter at this point. And just could not come up big when we needed him. He is also not a good FT shooter. He's missed so many crucial FTs this year and we mostly won in spite of that. Missing the front end of a one and one at that point is a knife in the back. But the bigger mistake, imo was when he got the pass from Kon he had to look get rid of it immediately. Even Sion (who has more ice in his veins than Proctor). Flagg was open. Just can't hold onto it unless you are an 80% guy.

Flagg was awesome. But I have to say, and this is probably the one criticism of him at this point, he tries too many tough shots, those pull up or fade away mid-range umpers are very difficult and not really high percentage shots. He missed a ton of those. I've noticed this challenge for many years now that shows up in a lot of talented, young, usually OAD, college players. Same thing R.J. Barrett would do. They learn the moves that you see from a Kobe or LeBron or Doncic or Jordan that in reality are very tough shots unless you practice them thousands of times. And at this stage, Flagg has just not taken those shots enough, imo. It's one thing to mimic the moves of the pros and develop the same move. Flagg has that. It's another to master those shots at a very high %.

That was not a great shot he took at the end, imo. Would have been an amazing shot if it went in. But he needed to drive for the basket or drive and dish.

Again, love him. We would not be in the FF without him. But that's part of the territory with a freshman.

Really, really sad and so incredibly irritating to be that close and lose, especially given how great a season we had. We had that game and just ****ing gave it away! 64-55. Should have won, no doubt.

Haven't been this sad probably since 1999. There were other tough losses (2004. We were just robbed. 2006 tough - but that team was flawed. 2022 hurt but it seemed the case we just were not good enough). This hurts so bad because we had the game in our pocket and could not execute down the stretch. Houston has a great D but still, we are better than we played. Could be and needed to be. We just had to play tough down the stretch and have more poise getting the ball in, being strong with the ball.

The other frustration was when our defense broke down. Usually from an attempted steal or double team in the 2nd half. You just could not leave one of their 3-point shooters open. That one where Flagg tried to jump the double and left his guy wide open. Ugh. Happened 3-4 times in the second half. No reason for the D to do that. You have to stick to their guards.

Losing in the elite eight is worse. I was glad we made it past Alabama. And I HATE losing in the first weekend. Final Four I can live with.
What is the difference between elite eight and final four really? Both you come up short. This was a Duke choke. Sorry to say it. Definitely going to hurt because this team should have won it all this year. Coach Scheyer needs to get better

We lost the Game... Bad coaching down the stretch. We made ZERO WINNING PLAYS. Gave up too many offensive rebounds. Jon made zero adjustments to maintain. Proctors 1 and 1 missed free throw will killer. Up 1 you have to hit the front end... Lastly, if I'm Jon I tell Coop, GET TO THE RIM NO MATTER WHAT. IF THEY DONT ROTATE, MAKE A PLAY AT THE BASKET, IF THEY ROTATE, LOB TO ManMan, it will be open, don't settle for a jumpshot.

Last play, Cooper get to the rim score, Get fouled, or Throw the Lob and Dunk. BAD to say, but let the refs make a tough call if you get fouled. If that happens We Win. If you miss it, I'll live with that result, if I'm Jon...

Good season, Banner season, but not CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON. Next year. And now the FUN of the off-season. (SARCASM)

I didn’t think it was Jon’s fault, or the refs, or the freshmen.. It ultimately came down proctor not being clutch with 1 and 1’s and a terrible turnover and sion not being able to get the ball in.. take those things away we still win. I’ll also add I’ll take proctor back in a heartbeat.

This one stings a lot- I believe this was the best team in the nation. To get to a final four in yr 3 is impressive and something to be celebrated. Glad we made it here even if we had to choke, still better than losing at any point before.
