Because the local police and govt aren’t doing their job, somehow that equals the locals are making it all up. I’m not sure how that benefits those complaining at the city council mtg.

YOU were the one citing the Holocaust denier and my point about Lord of the Flies was that it would be banned today not to compare it with anything else. I have an utter disdain for bigots and ignorant people who refuse to get educated. Datt pointed out how most of the books on the list were NOT homoerotic porn but were age appropriate. We should be EMBARRASSED by a request to ban a book about a jewish kid trying to survive post Nazi Europe. Instead you turn it on me. This “safe place” crap is code for “don’t expose me to other points of view.” It isn’t safe for gay or trans kids but you don’t appear to give a shit about them. Nazis banned books. You should be very proud.
There have always been common sense limits to the types of books placed in children’s libraries. The books were only banned after being foolishly placed there in the first place. Something tells me there’s more to the story you’re not telling us about the Jewish kid in post war Europe. Just a hunch. The Left banned Huckleberry Finn in schools for years due to the N word. Don’t pretend the Right is the party of censorship in 2024.

And if you went down the list, there was a book about a Jewish kid in France just after WWII that some parents objected to as biased. The book about Michelle Obama was objected to because she described Trump as a bully, which of course he is. Other books the parents felt that the accurate depictions of things like slavery would make their kids ashamed of being white. You guys are all in a twitter because Harris wants to do something about the disinformation on X and other Social Media sites which you see as impinging on the First Amendment. Well, who the hell gave you the right to dictate what my kids can read in schools? Isn't it my job as a parent? And don't you think someone like me would want kids to be exposed to literature dealing with gay kids. There would be a hell of a lot less bullying if there were open discussions about how these differences are ok. This country is moving more and more in line with Nazi-like group think, by demonizing "the other." It is frightening.
Pot meet kettle. Biden has been demonizing half the country for four years. He has “othered” Maga supporters with the help of the cheerleader media.

That is rich. What you seem to do is copy a tweet by some half-wit without doing any kind of deep dive into his claims to see if they are remotely correct. Then when I point out how half-baked they are, you tell me I am twisting myself in knots to disagree with you. You know what is twisting yourself in knots: citing something posted by a Holocaust denier and then claiming that the mere fact that "he said something dumb about the Holocaust" should not be a factor in the accuracy of his posts while dismissing anything that comes from mainstream media; or refusing to acknowledge that Trump is now admitting that he lost the election by coming up with some nonsense about how that does not mean that the votes were not fixed. I could go on with some of the truly surprising posts that show up here. As far as education, yes we want our kids to learn in a safe space but that does not mean that they should not be pushed to learn about people who are different or asked to do some examination about how people are treated. We read Lord of the Flies in school. It is an absolute masterpiece of a novel that would be banned today because it shows bullying and essentially a rape scene. Right now, gay kids are still being bullied and girls face sexual harassment and if you take out books that deal with those issues, then you are not protecting those types of kids at all. If that makes some parents uncomfortable, well, that is tough. The educators go to school themselves to learn how and what to teach and I would rather have them making the decisions than some homophobic or transphobic or racist parents who don't want their kids to expand their minds. That is how we are trending right now.
I have no clue what you’re talking about here up until you started talking about “as far as education goes,” like literally no clue. Who’s a Holocaust denier? Was the rest of that rant aimed at me or some one else. Very confusing.

Btw trying to equate Lord of the Flies with Bobby likes Bobby is a little extreme, but I guess that’s par for the course. You’re also all over the map in your explanation here. Teachers teach, but they answer to the parents not the other way around. And it’s ultra typical of you to label a vast swath of parents as being some sort of homophobic, trans phobic, racists etc etc etc. your utter distain for anyone who doesn’t have your warped world view must be a horrible human being and definitely not a parent that just wants to give their child a safe place to grow up and go to school.

Another, more contemporary Nigerian author, Chimamanda Adichie, has a really good TedTalk called "The Danger of the Single Story." You should check it out. It applies to the story you're telling here.

I linked it.
As you have pointed out many times before, I am a little slow. Can you help me figure out how an article from 20 months ago, referencing numbers from 2022 makes what Kirk said 3 days ago, half true?

Like people who claim to want to help you by giving you free stuff, but actually are locking you in generational poverty and dysfunction. Here’s a welfare check, but you only get it if your baby’s daddy or daddies lives outside of the home. And if he pays child support your food stamps will be cut. Bye Daddy.
You can’t afford an apt with your welfare check, but we have lovely public housing available. There’s a lot of crime and drug use, so just stay indoors the best you can.
This is what the Dems think of our nations poor, running on 60 years now.
Black birth rate out of wedlock: 25 % to 75% in twenty years.

There's a chapter in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart where the Ibo people of pre-independence Nigeria have different reactions to two British missionaries with very different styles. The one who seemed to be supportive was actually rather devious.

That's the context in which I 've used Malcolm X's white liberals speech, to illustrate how people who seem to be on your side can actually hurt you. Tell me I made that up in the last hour or so.

I would like to believe you, but your posting pattern over the years suggests your Party (and personal) accountability meter is too low, but your blame meter is too high.

Basically you're full of shit.

Dude, you must have one long planning period or is it Fall Break already?
Shocking that some parents don’t want their children reading about FOURTH GRADERS having sex. Simply shocking
That misrepresents the scene. It was curious 10-year-olds touching each other. The book is aimed at an audience in the late teens to early 20s. This isn't in any middle schools.

As a public school educator, it's pretty much part of my job description to help poor children overcome their circumstances regardless of race. I do this face-to-face -- not on internet message boards -- and have for more than 28 years now.

I can't imagine going through life without proper ID, but I know that people do, and disproportionately, it's BIPOC who don't have ID. It has nothing to do with intelligence. The only logical explanation left is that it's systemic.

Every time you claim Black people have been hoodwinked by the Democratic Party, you're essentially saying they're too dumb to see your so-called "truth."

I provided you with a few links sometime last week.

First book on your list: Drama, by Raina Telgemeier. It's set in middle school, exactly when kids are dealing with puberty and their sexual orientation. It includes at least one character who is gay. So what? If you don't have problems with heterosexual explorations in literature, it's just your own bias to draw the line at gay relationships. It's not going to turn any straight kids gay. It very well may give an already gay kid some sense of belonging. Representation matters.

book #2 on your list: When Wilma Rudolph Played Basketball, by Mark Weakland. It's about Wilma Rudolph -- one of the greatest American track stars -- who grew up under segregation in Tennessee. Is she unworthy of being the subject of a book? Should a book about her life completely ignore the circumstances around her?

book #3 on your list: Lawn Boy, by Jonathan Evison. This is a book intended for older teens and young adults. It's semi-autobiographical. The protagonist is exploring his sexual orientation and dealing with racism. There's a scene where an adult recalls a sexual encounter with a 4th grader... when he was also a 4th grader. Why should high school students not have the option of whether to read this book or not for themselves?

Feel free to pick and choose some tough ones for me to address.

If you want schools to be safe places to learn, deal with poverty and violence, not books that make parents uncomfortable. Education is inherently uncomfortable. You don't grow from a place of comfort. You have to challenge your current understanding to grow. The concern that teachers have gay agendas or are trying to indoctrinate students is without merit. They want kids to become better critical thinkers. They want kids to be challenged. The classroom has long been a safe place for that because there's an adult who planned it thoughtfully and is monitoring it.
