Transfer Portal

Wish the guys would have stayed but looking at things objectively, Duke improved its roster with the current transfers.

At this time, Brown > Stewart/Power & Gillis > Schutt & Blakes.

If Duke brings in a guard through the portal, I think one of the Frosh guards decomits.

That’s just leaves Stewart and Power who I truly believe wanted more playing time and simply didn’t see it at Duke.
I don’t think the staff told them to look else where . I think it was more or less not guaranteeing them what they wanted to hear .
I think this is close to the truth. Stewart & Power needed to show the staff that they belonged on the court for more than spot minutes. They didn't. They did their calculations and decided to bail rather than compete.

Don't we have 2 bigs plus Brown?
Right now I think we start Brown, Flagg, Gillis, Foster, Proctor. That may change as the year goes on. That is a potent line up with 1 senior and 2 juniors.

Or are these players who are looking at life after basketball? Plus the pf spot has the most minutes available on next years squad . Don’t need more bigs . A mature guard who can play the 1-3 is needed simply to help out with the youngsters.
Shey I agree it wouldn't hurt to have a mature 4th/5th year guard, but I believe Proctor and Gills will be the voices of reason. When you look at our most recent success, it came with a 4th year pg, sf, and Big. You need that in these times. Now I do not devalue Stanley Borden's presence in the locker room, but I realize there will be a learning curve our new BIGs.

The thing is they aren’t freshman guards. Evans can play there but Harris and Kon are more SF’s. Yes they can give some minutes at the shooting guard spot but could they guard someone like RJ Davis? Flagg will play some minutes at the 4 this season and Gillis will be 3/4. Harris/Kon will get some minutes at the 2/3 spot. But I see more at the 3 for Kon. Just my opinion.

Why not get an inside enforcer around the rim? Or are we thinking the freshmen are going to do it? I'd rather we get an inside force that can rebound/defend bigs and get 10-15 a game EVERY game than another guard...still not sure what a JS Duke team looks like
Good lord there are only two frontcourt spots in the post . You now have three legit post players in Mal, Brown and Pat . Gillis can play pf . Flagg can switch to pf if need be . One more big and your pretty much asking big pat not to develop and get ready to hit the portal in 25 . Not to mention you already have a log jam at SF and you playing devils advocate hoping one or two can switch to sg if needed.

Shey you're right. I will say it for myself, I'm just scared Flagg will be Kyle. He won't start at center, but he shouldn't play a lot of time at the pf. I just don't want him out of position. Gillis and Brown are great pickups. Harris, Kon and Evans should be able to figure out the sg position.

As I see it these are the positions the roster could play:

Proctor (1,2)
Foster (1,2)
Evans (2,3)
Harris (2,3)
Kon (3)
Flagg (3,4)
Gillis (3,4)
Brown (4,5)
Maluach (5)
Ngongba (5)

The front court should be good with 3 options at the 4 spot and 3 options at the 5. The SF spot is very good with plenty of options. What worries me is if Foster or Proctor missing anytime the guard spot really would be thin. If Duke is going to add another portal I believe the best option would be a combo guard. Doesn’t need to be starter but a good specialist offense or defense.

If you look at it , Mitchell was planning on going back to the sf spot . He wasn’t at Duke because of Flag. Flag is your starting SF. Mal isn’t coming off the bench which allows Brown to be your starting pf which is his natural position . Gillis is your hybrid 2-4 spot player however I think he was brought in to keep the frontcourt physical when brown or Mal goes out and big Pat from all things being said will need to work on his conditioning coming off injury which I think the addition helps him . The thing is Scheyer has barely kept to a nine man rotation.
I say bring in a combo or true pg like most are saying and have Young come in and show the freshman post Moves and foot work .
Foster will also need conditioning I’d imagine in the off season .

Conditioning is another conversation. You are correct on that also. It's about bringing in players and making sure they know their role.

10 Scholarship Players... If you pick up two more...what are their positions?

Brown and Gillis are really good pickups. Brown will help, but not sure how much better he will be than if Stewart had all summer working on his game. If he is an upgrade over Stewart, that's even better.

Our freshmen (other than Flagg) would have benefitted in terms of playing time had Power stayed. I'm not sure they will now that Gillis is here. He seems like he can do it all, and do it with some muscle. I expect him to play a fair amount.

As far as point guard, a guy from a small school willing to come in and be a good practice player, maybe fill in when foul trouble or something arises.

Agree with your positions, except for Evans. I just don’t see him playing the 3 with his light frame. I could see Kon playing some 2. It will be interesting watching this team develop.

Yep. They traded 4 guys for two guys that can for sure give you 20+ minutes a game. The other 4 are either not guaranteed to make a leap to starter level minutes next year or program guys.

I still wish Stewart would have stuck around because I think he would bring great value/energy off the bench and would have been a starter level minute guy as a junior for sure. But obviously he is probably going somewhere where he is already in a teams top5.

What transfer guards are we talking to?

It is frowned upon to talk about kids transferring during the season. I figured Reeves, Schutt, and Power. And Blakes.

Is it wrong that Gillis and Brown are already my two favorite players? Nate James and Lance Thomas 2.0.

I've seen the Brea kid, Mahaney from St Mary's and someone else that I can't remember at this point

Gillis shot 46.8 percent from 3 last season. 6’6, 230 lbs, the Big 10’s sixth man of the year and he will turn 24. I love it! Sick of players like this being on the opposing teams here lately. If you can’t beat em join em! Bring it on!

Appreciate the nice posts from the Purdue fan. Sure was pulling for them against that other team.

Evan’s ability to attack the basket and shoot his mid range shot are exactly why he will play the three. He is not a sg although I think you see him play some there given his abilities to help draw attention away from Flag .

Duke’s height next season as of now:

6’5”
6’5”
6’5”
6’6”
6’6”
6’6”
6’8”
6’9”
6’11’’
7’1”
I like it. If we pick anyone else, veteran guard and BIG that do not want to disrupt the progress and vision of the team. Mentors. 5th year players preferably.

I just don’t see him being physical enough to compete with other experienced 3’s, especially on defense.

I can't be the only one thinking that we pose this same question almost every year? Can this be the year where we legitimately play 8-10 guys? Or will we see a 6-7 man rotation by ACC play with our guards playing 38 minutes again?

Evans reminds me a lot of Ingram in his style of play and built. As of right now he will need to play some mostly guard due to Duke’s numbers and weight. But his future is definitely at the SF and why they have him classified at that position. He is ranked as one of the top SF in this class.

I'd say Jon plays quite a few guys early on. But the rotation should dwindle down to 7, maybe 8 by mid January. It's what all good teams do.
