1. Let’s get it out there first that I am not inherently opposed to President Trump’s action here.
2. On the face of it, situations where people are paid less than minimum wage should raise red flags. It warrants concern.
3. The article you posted has a single GOP Rep as its only cited source. That means we get nothing but his political take on it. It’s not necessarily invalid, but that’s not good journalism.
4. The article I shared also sucks, imo, but it points out that among the people opposing these workplaces are disability advocates and families of the disabled. Your article says simply “the left.” Mine points out that even among those affected there are differing opinions.
5. When it says “less than minimum wage, let’s be very clear: it’s less than half of minimum wage for some. $3.50, to be exact.
6. This is not an open and shut case of awesome or awful. Like I said in 2, it warrants concern, and I’ll add, monitoring. The $3.50 example I cited above was at a nonprofit, for example. That’s more understandable to me. If it were some place where stockholders and a CEO were raking in big bucks, that would feel much more exploitative.
7. This is also an example of the vetting I keep urging y’all to do with news media, and an example of how I’m not a hypocrite about it.

As for sending that money back to the states, that means sending it back to the states that paid in, not to the states that need it the most. NY, California, Texas... those are the states getting their own money back. Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee will not be getting it.
If you spent a minute of your own education in public schools, you had some amazing, influential teachers. Unless you live in the smallest, bougiest bubble ever, you know public educators today who you think are incredible people. When you support shutting down the Dept of Ed, you're not sticking it to liberals; you harming all public school kids and employees, including the ones you know and care about, and particularly those in the worst circumstances.

President Trump has stated directly he wants to shut it down (or "look into" shutting it down). I am pretty sure Musk has said the same. It has been a very prominent talking point on the right in general, and several of y'all have joined that bandwagon here. It has nothing to do with anything theoretical but misguided; it has to do almost entirely with the lie that teachers are indoctrinating kids, grooming kids, encouraging them to be trans, encouraging them to be gay, making white kids feel shame about slavery, oppressing Christians, treating undocumented immigrant children like children, and every other fear tactic conservatives use to tear down public education and hand it over to profiteers.
