RIP John Chaney

Great man. If he didn't invent the match up zone defense he certainly perfected it. He got the most out of what he had. RIP

Basketball was so much more fun back then! Temple played some bizarre games. Each player had a defined role. They would play nail-biting games that exhausted me watching on TV. Mark Macon would shoot 6 for 21, but never turn the ball over.

In 1988 or 89, Temple took my Tar Heels to the wood shed in a nationally televised TV game on Sunday after UNC played an ACC game on Saturday. My bookie begged me to put a big bet on UNC. He offered me a better line because all his smart clients loaded up on Temple. I really upset him by refusing. Temple's Center, Ramon Rivas, bruised J.R. Reid all afternoon

I will never forget watching a Duke/Temple regular season game and I thought “this HAS to be the only college matchup in the history of college basketball where both coaches ALSO looks like their mascots!” I never got that image out of my head.

RIP to the Wise Old Owl!

Chaney was one of the greats but his temper was a little scary. Cal looked more than a little scared in that video. :)

Cal was in a bad spot. If you beat up someone twice your age, you look like a jerk. If you lose like Robin Ventura against Nolan Ryan, you're the punchline to a joke
