I just listened to the latest 5 point play podcast. Those guys are really high on Proctor. Out of the three fore mentioned freshmen, who has the best year, stat wise? Who is more important to their team's success? Dig deep. Yes, I know this is a Duke forum!

Thanks for the listen! Very high on Proctor and think he has a big time year and ultimately gets drafted in the lottery.

Stats wise it’s always difficult to predict based on what they’re asked to do. But I’d still take Proctor against either of them and I was a huge fan (still am) of JJ’s game.

I don't know how the stats will turn out, but Proctor is the more talented and I think at Duke for only one year. Probably a lottery pick. He is a big part of the reason why I believe Duke can be a very formidable team heading into March. Three lottery picks plus some other guys who will play in the NBA but unlike a certain other fanbase, I am not going to start counting my chickens. I learned my lesson years ago.

If and this is a big IF . Proctor can adjust to the college level like he played in FIBA ball. He will go early first round . Remember this is Roach’s team so Proctor will play the two or should I say combo guard slot . He’s best suited as a pg and I think him and Roach will feed off each other .

This team is exciting (and scary) because there are so many variants and new pieces. We know Roach will be good, and we know Grandison and Young will be steady if unspectacular role players. Whitehead, he could be AJ all over the map or he could be Banchero level good. I think he will be good, but perhaps inconsistent. Not AJ inconsistent, but he is also recovering from an injury. If he comes back quick and stays healthy he could be all ACC good. Lively could get pushed around and struggle or he could be like Anthony Davis by year's end. Flip and Reeves are total wildcards right now. Mitchell is raw, but can he be the Ron Artest type player we need or is he a year or two away? Teams will play off him if he cannot hit a 15 footer. Proctor seems likely to be very good this year, perhaps our best player. Blakes looks better, but how much better? Schutt looks like an AOC type who may need a year or two. And how will the parts mesh together? Right now I see us being a bit below UNC and Virginia. Miami will be good as well. My guess right now is 3rd in the ACC and a 3 seed, but with the potential to be better or worse. Unless several of our freshman really struggle we should definitely make the tournament. If 3 of our freshman are studs we could make some noise. If Proctor, Flip. Lively and Whitehead are humming by year's end we could get back to the FF.

I think Scheyer in an article said this team would be more balanced on offense and any one could be our top scorer on a nightly basis . I like the fact that defense is being pushed .

I see proctor playing a lot of PG and moving Roach over.

Proctor being an elite PG definitely raises our ceiling. He definitely looked more of a PG than a SG in the scrimmage. Right now my line up would be Roach, Proctor, Grandison, Mitchell, and Lively. When Whitehead comes back put Grandison or Mitchell at the 4. Let Flip develop coming off the bench.

I’d have to see a little more then an inter squad scrimmage before I could put Mitchell over Flip. That being said, IMO given Jon’s stance on defense I could see it .

Maybe. With Lively, Grand and Whitehead that's 7-1, 6-6, 6-6. And we still have Mitchell, Flip and Young off the bench.

But you have Catchings who’s more adjusted to playing against bigs and Grandison just doesn’t strike me as a player to contain big men . I’ll stand by my statement. If Grandison starts at the four or plays at the four a lot has gone wrong with the other three bigs . Shoot if Duke goes to playing a lot of small ball a lot has gone wrong or player evaluations were seriously over hyped in both the high school and portal routes .

Flip does not strike me as a top 5 guy. Or top 10 guy. There's nothing wrong with that; he didn't rate himself. He's got nice size and a nice shot but he's a step slow. But I've said this all summer. He is more of a Kelly guy who needs a few years. That's fine; Kelly eventually was a very good player. But it took time. Mitchell, Young, Lively and Reeves are all ahead of him at the moment. We need to bring him along slow. Eventually Flip will be a very good player. He will have his moments this year but he may need a year or two to put it all together. And he will.

I also love your opinion of RJ Davis. I think he is the best point guard in the conference. JJ Starling will have the best stats of the 3. Coach Brey thinks he reminds him of Andrew Toney.

Yeah reluctantly I’m high on RJ Davis haha. It was the best move Hubert could pull because if you remember they were calling for his head mid year.

I can’t agree with this . It’s only been one scrimmage and they haven’t played against another team ( until today ). Haven’t seen Lively and Mitchell while he looked active I can’t say he’s ahead of Flip except maybe on defense. Flip is already bigger then Kelly and someone pointed out its hard to get motivated in an inner squad show( don’t even know if I’d call it a scrimmage) . As for Reeves , I like his game but would have also liked to see his skill against Lively . I don’t think Young is fast enough to run the floor and defend him on leak outs.

I agree with you, we are being judgmental on a 19 yr. old kid even before we see him against another team. I see a young man with great size and a lot of skills who may not yet have matured into his body. Wouldn't it be nice if he pulled a Grayson or Eliot Williams and became a factor in the second half of his freshman year. Like adding a rotation guy 1/2 way through the season.

As for Reeves, I am hoping we don't need him this year but can't wait to see him with another year of seasoning next year.

Flip will be good no doubt. It will just take time is all I am saying. Don't we scrimmage Houston today? Hearing Tennessee blew out Gonzaga by 19. Tenn. could be really good.

Not surprising. We're down 2 starters, and Houston is good. Hearing Mitchell and Young played well. Proctor reportedly struggled. Good experience for our young team.

Proctor wasn’t the only to struggle had this been a regular season game Roach fouls out . A good eye opener for sure for the frosh. Down two stars I’ll take the 11 point loss but Blakes rebounding stats were good .
