Official game day thread- Duke vs Clemson

I was on a plane and missed the game. I watched highlights this morning. The loss doesn’t bother me that much. I really didn’t want to be entering the tourney on a 24 game win streak anyway. ;)

Lots of good comments here. I am not among those on the ledge. Winning out is realistic and I think we get a 1 seed if we do.

If I’m not mistaken in all three losses against old tough teams we were tied with under a minute left. Flagg is going to learn from the experiences and pull thru for us in the tourney. That slip is as just a freak accent and those things happen. He was in position to make a relatively easy shot to send it to overtime.

Next.

I get some of the complaints about the officiating. But, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. We were on the road, in a hostile environment, playing a team that was really wanting to prove themselves.

We just didn’t close the deal. Clemson shot 59% from the field, and out rebounded Duke 36-23.

To win a championship, that’s unacceptable.

Especially when you’re the tallest team in the country . We will see them again and hopefully the team is 100 percent

I'm not a "this was a good loss" type person, losing sucks no matter what. However, we had Gillis out, Cooper was battling the flu, Clemson shot lights out the whole game, we were severely outrebounded, and we still had a chance to win the game. Hopefully this loss fuels us for the rest of the season.

Oh and we are still comfortably a 1-seed. Let's finish out the regular season without another loss and then the ACC tournament won't even matter, we will be a 1 seed no matter what. Another loss and things could be a bit dicey.

I hear ya and realize it's poor form to complain about the officiating, especially after a loss. And, again, I only watched a 10 min. highlight video, but the calls/non-calls borderlined on absurd. How a player like Flagg gets punched in the face/throat area on an obvious pushoff, right in front of the official, not get called is ridiculous. Proctor and Flagg both got body checked and knocked backwards, beyond the 3 point line, while dribbling, yet no call? That's ridiculous. Mal's 5th.....absurd. Kon's flagrant.....absurd. Those are all calls a ref has to want to make or not make.

Trust you're right and the refs were just swallowing their whistles impartially, but that 10 minutes I watched looked like Clemson had the golden pass to play football and Duke was on a tight leash.

Duke was called for 23 fouls....

Clemson was called for 16. Considering we were deliberately sending them to the line to stop the clock and that they were killing us inside, that’s not an alarming or suspicious differential.
Foul differential isn't always the best indicator of how a game was officiated. The types of calls vs non-calls is what made a big impression on me, at least.

DukeDallas yes I agree finish the rest of the regular season without a blemish, but I also think Duke cannot lose in the ACC Quarters otherwise they may lose a #1 seed

I thought officiating was consistent, which is a better metric than “even.” I doubt any of us keep up with borderline calls and no-calls that go in our favor, so I’m pretty reluctant to blame refs.

Officiating was not the problem. There were some times Cooper got hacked, but the refs were letting them play.

also, it was dumb on Knuppuel’s part to get himself a Flagrant 1 Foul

Maybe. What I do know is that the committee doesn't value the conference tournaments like most think they should. 2 years ago when we made the run and won the tournament, it didn't change our seed at all. Plus...the SEC teams we are competing against are gonna have more losses just due to playing one another.

Take care of regular season business which includes beating Illinois and winning some more road games I think is all we need to do. But yes, a quarterfinal win would be nice too because that will be a BAD loss to whoever it is.

Duke dropped to #5 in the coaches poll released today. Clemson is up to #19. Bama, Auburn, Florida and TN are ranked ahead of Duke.

The last replay, it looked to me like he raised his legs after he had lowered them in a defensive gesture, like protecting his middle. I had just decided “No, not flagrant” when they announced it was and I just shrugged. Then I groaned because you know people are gonna start making Grayson comparisons.

We're tied with Florida at #3 in the AP poll. I'm good with that after our loss. What I don't understand is how auburn can stay at #1 after they lost at home. Auburn last week beat Georgia at home by 21 then on the road beat Arkansas who had won 2 road games in a row at Kentucky and Texas.

Kon was protecting his b@%^s, plain and simple. There isn't a man alive who would have spread their legs more so a guy can step thru. It was a bang, bang play that, in slo-mo, can be interpreted to be nefarious if one wants to see it that way. The guy was instinctively protecting his man parts.

Also why wasn’t there a foul on Zachery for jumping on Kon right in front of the referee? Kon already got rid of the ball. Definitely made contact with Kon and the ref pulled the whistle from his mouth looking right at the play.

Anyone wanna chime in on whether Clemson rolls over tonight? They played their super bowl Saturday, doubt they bring anywhere near the focus and intensity that they had then. Think UNC may come out with a W.

I think there size will be too much for UNC but they did lose at home to gt so who knows.

In theory they should definitely beat them but an emotional huge win then a quick turn around doesn't help. It won't surprise me a bit if the Cheats win and then they'll be on a roll until they play us.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Clemson lost tonight. Talent wise, they should win by 5-7.

You're assuming that both teams play the same exact style of ball.

No, that's why I said "they were killing us inside" in the exact post you quoted.
Well, when one team can throw bodies into people and throat punch with impunity, while the other team gets whistled for being taller than their opponent and trying to protect their nads, it's probably easier to dominate inside.

Not taking away from Clemson's age, experience, physicality and the game they played, but they got away with a lot of contact that Duke got whistled for. Perfect example, Clemson's player bringing the ball up stopped quickly and stuck his butt out causing the Duke player (think it was Proctor) to run into him from behind. Foul called. Coop did the exact same thing, with the same result......no whistle.

If I had the stomach to watch the replay, which I don't, I may come away with a different opinion. But I find it nearly impossible to believe that the only absurd calls that went Clemson's way were in the ten minutes of highlights.
