Official game day thread- Duke vs AZ sweet 16

Cooper Flagg man. I never thought I would see a Duke freshman have an impact like Zion did but Coop is simply better. Love Zion and he was the most electric Duke player of all time but Coop is just different.

That boy absolutely carried this team tonight.

His kid played on the Wisconsin team Duke beat for the 2015 title...

Probably a bitter douche!

Jim Jackson’s Ohio State team was the number one seed in the Midwest region in 1991. Some team from Durham came out of that region that year by blowing out St. John’s in the Regional Final. The same Johnnie’s who blew out Jimmy Jackson’s squad in the sweet 16.

Zona got to the line way too much, had a few clankers somehow bobble around and ultimately roll through the rim and a bunch of Love’s hero ball shots went in. I’ve seen him have like a 1-9 type shooting night from 3 plenty of times, but some nights he will get more in than usual.

Survive and advance, they couldn’t stop Duke offensively. Jon had to massage the situation a little more due to the foul trouble.

IDK what to make of Saturday. Will be a contrast of styles. Duke should be able to exploit them inside and Bama will see a lot of length every time they jack a three. They are very explosive and formidable. One wonders if maybe they maxed out tonight hitting all those 3’s like they did.

I thought the common foul on Pat was the right call. The other dude had him locked up, too, and Pat was already falling.

We've said it before, but Pat has a great edge to him. He and Mal remind me a little of our post rotation in 2010.

I don't go for conspiracies about reffing, but it was a horribly called game. They didn't let them play.

I waved at my TV when they showed Caleb Love at the end.

Jim Jackson sucked, particularly for calling Sion "Sigh-on" multiple times, including after Anderson had pronounced it correctly.

Our lob game is beautiful.

What hasn't been said about Coop already? Wow! Zion was a freak of nature, but Coop is the most complete, most skilled freshman we've ever had.

Loved Mason's minutes. Big 3.

We've played a shorter bench, but the 36 total bench minutes is the second lowest total of the season (34 vs NCSU). 4 starters had at least 32 minutes each.

While watching Alabama, I was rooting for all of their 3 pointers to keep going in. Shooting 50 3 pointers is typically not a great strategy for winning. Yes they made half of them, but how likely is that to happen again? I’m hoping they fell in love with the 3 and will carry that into the game Saturday.

I just watched the game this morning. I didn’t want to stay up late and feel like crap today. I thought after the explosive start of the second half we were going to win by 30.
3 other things:
1. Refs were horrible
2. Announcers were terrible
3. We will never see another Cooper Flagg. Wow!

Brian Anderson. Sounds like a name you’d make up if you had to go into Witness Protection
Unless Coop got hit in the head for a flagrant, can they call a new foul while reviewing another call? Not sure
They can’t call a foul on the replay. But those announcers should have seen it and noted it anyway. It reflected their bias.

Y'all gotta credit the Big Cats for giving you all you wanted.
Agree?

They were tough. I was concerned about this game after they beat Oregon. Had to believe Love would bring it and he did.

Their perimeter shooting and quickness kept us off balance defensively the entire game.

I hope Bama doesn’t shoot as well. And our perimeter D has to be better. Our size is great but Zona’s quickness hurt us. Can’t leave so many open 3s.

This has to be the worst I’ve felt after a win in a long time — largely due to the refs. But we held on.

Another toss up battle in the elite 8. This game is going to be tough. We have to play better D but the matchups will be difficult.

Gritty win! Arizona (Love) made a lot of really tough, contested shots that kept it close in the first half. I said on the first page of this thread that Duke's "good" was better than Arizona's "best". Arizona gave us their best shot, and they lost. D-U-N .... done!

Flagg is an absolute beast. He was not going to let us lose last night.

Next!

And all of a sudden our depth doesn’t look good. Evans and Foster brought nothing. Evans has to make better shot decisions and Foster simply has to shoot better.

We will need everyone to be better Saturday.

I didn’t read through the thread so maybe this has already been said.

I don’t think we really wanted to play Brown, foul situations put us in a little jam and we hit 4 minutes from him.

He wasn’t himself as he favored his left arm. He was strictly a right handed player.

One he guarded the out of bounds passer and he didn’t move either arm.

But, he has two more days to get even more healthy and hopefully 9 more days before the FF.

He didn’t hurt us but hopefully he’ll help more going forward.

It wasn’t just our game, I’ve seen others where the refs start blowing the whistle and it kills any momentum a team has and totally disrupts the flow of the game.

Refs were a joke last night. Hopefully we don't have these refs and can play physical because that will slow Alabama down. Some of the touch fouls called on us last night were ridiculous.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the NCAA allows for the same crew twice in the tournament for any team?

The second I saw Cassell was on the call- I knew he would have his crooked hand in the cookie jar one way or the other. Every time he’s on a Duke call, it’s a major disadvantage for us. Just go back to Virginia game from two years ago.

The bench didn't play great, or much. It's one game. Good minutes from Pat and Mason. Evans has been streaky. He's due for a hot streak.

I just hope Cooper heals from the beating he took last night. It’s amazing how much he got hacked throughout the game.

This! We have a LOT of threats. On any given night one of our players can go off, including bench guys. Look at Proctor. I bet anything Arizona spent a lot of time planning on how to defend him. He had a quiet but productive 7 points. I have a feeling Evans is going to go off sometime very soon!
