jaden schutt

Schutt made 17 three's in a game and shot 51 percent from 3...as a sophomore. Looks a bit like JJ when he shoots.
To be fair, JJ was probably the best pure 3 point shooter to come out of high school in the last 2-3 decades. Think folks forget how good JJ was coming out of high school. I don’t get to see as many high school players that are blue blood bound as folks in the Carolinas, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, etc. The only high school player that came anywhere near to being in a similar category as JJ in high school was Tony Delk.

Granted Delk didn’t live up to the hype in college that he created in high school, but he would make multiple 3 point shots 5 feet behind where the NBA 3 point line is today and that was 25 years ago. Way before players started including that shot in their practice and warmups shots
like they do today.

I got to see JJ play a bunch in high school and his shot as a 15 year old looked like it should be used in an instructional video.

I remember waiting in line to see him play in a small gym at Roanoke Catholic High School against JR Reynolds, who would go on to start at UVA. JR was a year younger, but JJ just looked different, even from another eventual ACC guy. He just embodied the part - he knew exactly what he was and what he was capable of - and we all saw that for four years at Duke.

I don't expect Schutt to be JJ. I hope he will remind us of Scheyer. I do expect good things from him. Just have that feeling.

It's always hard to make comparisons, but the thing that elevated JJ to another level for me was his development as a scorer at Duke. He came in Freshman year as a three point shooter. Soph year teams had a game plan for him and took away some of that. Junior year he came back with a solid midrange game along with a step back and side step three that was a deadly mix. Senior year, despite the way it ended was a thing of beauty to watch as a fan.

If Shutt or any of our recruits has that sort of career it will be amazing. I wish all of them nothing but the best!!

Completely agree. Additionally, JJ got in incredible shape after his sophomore year? Changed his diet and totally reworked his body. They still had a plan to defend him, he out ran, outcut, and outscreened that plan. He ran his defenders into the ground.

Kind of surreal with you describing each of JJ's 4 years. I really miss the days when top notch players gave us more than a year or two.

I watch so many of those games on YouTube. He reads defenses so well and then makes his way to his spots using screens. He only needs a half second to let it go. Such an art. Man I miss JJ.

You guys are too young to remember Bill Bradley with the Knicks. He would run from corner to corner, wearing out his defender. He was a very good shooter (before the 3 point line) so the defender had to chase him. Very JJ like except he wasn't the focal point of the offense (guys like Reed, DeBuschere, Frazier and Monroe were a little more lethal).

Could Schutt have a little Grayson Allen in him? Or was that already mentioned?

Everyone always talks about the '99 loss. And that one hurt bad. But, I'm telling you '04 is worse for me. I loved those guys. What a group. If JJ just sees a couple more go down UCONN never comes back and we go on to Monday night. And then there's '06. He and Sheldon carried us all year and it showed against LSU. JJ was exhausted. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear when those fellas walked off the court the last time. Those two not winning a title will forever sadden me.

99 was worse for me. That was my favorite team. Brand deserved a title. At least Shane got one 2 years later. Can you imagine if Avery and Brand were seniors in 2001, and Maggette a junior? I liked JJ, but LSU shut him down. The entire team was bothered by LSU's length. It was a terrible match up for that team. To be fair, UConn shut down Brand and Avery.

You're both wrong. '86 was worse than either '99 or '04.

Cannot stand Bradley Imo he cost us a National Championship by backing out of his commitment at the last minute. If he had told us sooner he could have had Fred Hetzel who averaged over twenty per game for his career. With either one of them we get our National Championship in the sixties rather than the nineties

Mr. Sumner I watched the Duke/Louisville game in high school but I was not yet a Duke fan. I think I became a Duke fan the following year for some reason. My dad was a high school coach and liked them. I am ashamed to admit we had a betting pool among my high school basketball team and I picked Louisville for the tournament. I won 50 dollars and was rooting for Louisville. Hey I was young and foolish lol.

With you, 99 was the worst. That would’ve been the greatest Duke team ever. It’s such a shame JJ never won one though. 04 team was better but I would’ve loved to have seen senior JJ stick it to the rest of the nation and finish on top w his middle finger in the air.

True; they (the losses) were all bad. I just loved Brand and Avery and Battier (and Langdon and Burgess and Nate James and Carrawell and of course Maggette) and that team. We were blowing out teams all year. It is a shame we couldn't seal the deal.

The NBA peaked with those Knick teams. A thing of beauty.

Didn't JJ need a new jersey at halftime due to it being so stretched out from all the holding and grabbing by LSU?
