FINAL FOUR BOUND

Watching the 2001 title game for the umpteenth time, and man, that was a damn great team. Both teams were outstanding. Also, Billy Packer was terrible at hiding his disdain for Duke. His commentary is hot freaking garbage. Calling us "Duke University" and talking about the referees and the crowd. I really believe this game contributed to Duke receiving increased hate, and Packer was a massive part of it.

Billy was pretty damn rotten that night and I say that as someone who liked the old curmudgeon. He was Snarky, Smarmy, and you’re absolutely right that he contributed to it big-time. Remember that one comment he goes: “and Mike Krzyzewski said great job and he was referring to his players.” 🙄

Wonder how many CBS execs he gave a heart attack to in the first half of the 2008 final four with his infamous “This game is Ovah” remark when Kansas went up 20+ points on the Heels? And you could tell Jim Nantz was nervous about such an early proclamation by his reaction to it.

Here is that exchange after a Kansas player hits a three.

Billy Packer: This game is OVAH
Jim Nantz: Is it?!
Billy Packer: It is!
Jim Nantz: Wow!

That was Packers last Final Four. And the Heels did cut it to single digits in the second half.

The 01 final was a lot of cringe. But I’ve watched the 91 semi against Vegas prob more than any other Duke game, and he had some strong moments in that game

When Duke was up and coming under K, he seemed to be fairly neutral. The more successful we got, the jealousy started kicking in. By 01 he was manic with Duke hate and helped normalize the “Duke gets all the calls” myth, beginning in the semi against the terds

Packer is a massive POS
Growing up some of my friends were friends with Billy Packers kids. They went to a lot of NC State games for some reason. I played a round of golf with Packer after he retired. He had no intention of being a broadcaster but was a fill in for a game and they ask him back. Packer passed away last year I believe

It is all subjective. RR thinks Packer is an ACC and Duke homer. I like Boeheim. A few years ago after a game we lost he just said "Duke is not very good right now." Just casually he didnt soapbox for 10 minutes about it.

Jim Nantz, now that’s my guy! Love me some Nantz, sure miss him in this event. The first Final Four he called with Billy Packer was the 1991 Final Four. Brent Musburger left (or was forced out?) the year before leaving his voice forever associated with the Vegas massacre in the ears of Duke fans. Packers last FF was 2008. Jim Nantz helped provide the soundtrack for Duke’s greatest moments. As well as Bob Harris (RIP ❤️) on radio.

Nantz was a true pro. His steadiness probably helped Packer avoid going completely off the rails.
It’s been said before, but those NBC games with Enberg and Al McGuire were as good as it gets. Bucky Waters was pretty good, too.
Vitale doing those Big East games in the mid 80s was great as well.

The first finals I saw on TV was Indiana State/ Michigan State in 1979. A tough act to follow. Bird and Magic. Indiana State was undefeated going in.

Vegas massacre
😬 We should probably give up dibs on that label.

Very much agree on Boeheim. He reminds me of when Knight got into broadcasting. Very smart, and just ornery enough to not mince words.

Bilas picked Houston. As did the 2 announcers on espn radio today. I think we win but this is mildly surprising.

I know this won’t be a popular take. I like nantz until it is the end of a game or golf match. He goes full overdramatized commentary that doesnt seem organic. I understand that’s his thing kind of like rafferty doing the farmer fran impression after every tipoff. The dramatic thing just gets old after every game.

Coops got jokes too. Pregame show G Hill advises him not to get his haircut right before the FF, referring to the haircut in 91 that he’s always hated
Coop: Did you know it was a bad haircut or were you rocking it with confidence?
Gonna miss this kid
About to show a clip about Coop on ACCN

I went to North Moore, live in UPHS district now.

My son played some baseball for a LHS legend William Hardin.
Oh ok . Wish I could say I had fun times there lol but most my time was spent there only Monday thru Thursday. Friday thru Sunday I was on the beach lol

I really hope we win it . I believe I’m done after this year. There’s to much jumping around . Too much money involved . Politics. Over it. It’s not the same. I’ll Always pull for Duke but not be that much invested .
