***DUKE VS SIENA OFFICIAL GAMEDAY THREAD***

Can't say enough about our length. And it starts with Brandon who actually knows how to use it.

White jerseys...white letters...I thought they changed to blue..team pics???

Defense down the stretch could have been a bit better, but a solid performance. This will be fun to see how the team develops.

So does Ingram normally hit threes?? He's smooth and you can tell he has the talent but I'm not so certain I see the one and done potential there..

Thought we looked ok. Close to what I expected. I thought our D would be a bit better but that takes time as well. Perimeter shooting may be a long road. Plenty of positives but much work to do!

Concerned about only having 9 assists with 90 points. That's going to kill us against better teams.

Issues. Defense in the paint. PG. Passing.

Yep and of those three there are answers on this team, but the question will be can they develop.

That's one thing I love about this group. There are answers for weaknesses all over this roster. The problem is that they are all young. Will they develop this season or next?

Here's my stupid observations for this game (not season outlook by any means):

Grayson - unquestioned leader on O until Brandon decides he is capable of taking over. Probably our best passer right now too.

Matt - Superb on D and a great hustler. Looked more comfortable attacking than he did shooting tonight.

Amile - Obviously it'll be tough to achieve a double-double all year, but he is now comfortable and his added strength and weight seems to be making a difference.

Brandon - Has all of the talent in the world. Obvious one and done potential, but he doesn't have a one and done mind. His nickname is Sleepy for good reason. Hope he wakes up, because if he does, he becomes that future NBA All-Star this team needs.

Marshall - He is what we know. If he can rebound like he did tonight, we're in good shape in that category. Won't be a defensive key in the middle. That'll be Ingram and Amile. And maybe Chase. I'll get there.

Luke - He moves so confidently on the court. If he doesn't second guess himself, he'll be one of the team's top three scorers.

Derryck - Tried to earn his start back in one play each time down the court. He's gotta learn to let the game and his minutes come to him. It's obvious we need him, but he's playing like he wants to start by UK and it ain't happening. Maybe that's how the coaches are motivating him, but he has got to let his ball play dictate the game. He needs to use that speed and those handles to set his guys up as opposed to taking contested layups every other possession. He's fearless, I'll give him that, but he can (and will) be so much better.

Chase - Has length, speed and even decent court awareness, but his lack of strength is going to be an impact all year. Because of that, he's got to find other ways of operating. Hopefully he develops a little jumper before he leaves.

Sean - Will play one day, but that probably won't be until after December. Just seems a little unsure and lost, which isn't hard to understand when you know you're only coming in for a little bit. He's gotta just understand his role as a rebounder and defend some shots.

Antonio - I guess he decided not to redshirt. I wish he had.

Justin - Will probably redshirt.

Nick and Brennan - Thank you for your time in practice. Nick actually is a decent bench leader.

D and length are what this team will thrive on until January or February. Once they learn how to understand and execute with all of the options they have, then and only then, will they reach what they can become.

I kind of expected what I saw tonight. Absolutely loved how aggressive Grayson was. He played great. Amile was terrific. I really like all the length we can put on the floor.

There were alot of shots that just didn't fall tonight. All the whistles really added to the sloppiness of the game. Kennard is going to be a stud. I think he'll be a totally different player by the time conference play rolls around.

Great first win for this group, and a great tape to show the players what they need to improve on. Big picture goal is March/April..not November. :) On to Bryant and Go Duke!

Yep. This team doesn't have some of the unforgivable weaknesses other and better Duke teams have had. Last year, the D wasn't very good and we could not create turnovers. Not this year. 2012 there was no true go to scorer night in and out. We see Luke, Brandon and Grayson can give that. 2010 and other years, depth. Again, this team will have very nice depth by January.

It's all a matter of time with this crew. The team and the fanbase all need to be patient, because it can and will be special.

Actually, I was pretty impressed with this young team for the 1st game. Played exceptional defense for most of the game, played with a lot of energy for most of the game, turned it up a notch when they had to, for most of the game.
As with any young team, they seemed to lose focus with the big lead, and we must remember "K" will bring their focus back. This is going to take time and I can assure you there will be some lumps to be taken, and I will say it again, if this team grows together as a group, and not about "I" or "me", they are going to be hard to handle come March/April.
Even though this was Sienna, it was still a learning experience for these young kids, and I think if you paid attention to "K", he was not overcome by joy toward the end of the game. This is good, because he will use the loss of focus as a teaching experience.
Oh yeah, and Thornton, don't worry about it, he will be OK in due time!
Go Duke!!

Good opening game. Grayson and Amile were outstanding. A little rusty with our shooting bur that will take care of itself. OFC

I thought the passing was actually OK. A big part of the only 9 assists was guys missing wide open, totally within the offense 3's. I liked the overall unselfishness/willingness to make the extra pass. like most have said, most or all issues tonight are fixable. Loved what Amile provided. Would like a touch more from Marshal in regard to scoring/converting down low. Just think how POed NC fans would be If Grayson winds being ACC POY!

Loving Amile tonight!

I'll say this, the freshman have bad footwork setting their shots up. They aren't getting their feet set well. Good feet, good shot.
Hopefully they are just being overly anxious rushing the shot -- particularly Ingram. He has such height and wing span and really need not worry about being blocked. But he rushed his shots (which were mostly too flat and too long), without setting his feet and fully turning his shoulder. Hopefully he will settle down. Got better towards the end of the game.

Once the rotation is set and chemistry is established, better defense and passing will come

This might sound stupid, but given that Brandon has put on that much muscle that quickly could that be affecting his shot on the early going? It's one thing to adjust in practice, but having any sort of game pressure could expose the fact you're still working on improving the jumper. I expect he'll improve over the season.

I agree here. Thought our guys were always looking for the open man and shots were just not falling tonight. Team is ladies with talent and potential. Just hope K keeps using the depth we have as I think it will be key to improving and thriving as a team.
