***DUKE VS KENTUCKY OFFICIAL GAMEDAY THREAD***

It is a long season and was not sure what to expect from this game. Of the freshmen I think Kennard has the best basketball IQ and will play a lot. Ingram looked like he was playing in a AAU game with his intensity but will improve as the year goes on. I think this team will be good but will take some time to sort out best player combinations and playing time. At least now this team will know they need work.

LOL @ ESPN trolling us by showing a 'Sheed / Maryland highlight during a timeout.

It was a very forced highlight too.. A basic dribble drive pass in a game against an unranked team.
Yeah, seeing Big Ten on the floor when it's Maryland and Georgetown just ain't right.

My mistake - especially on Jefferson who had a very good game

It was hard to tell sometimes when the team was playing so poorly, MPM. Ultimately we didn't have enough guys that showed up. This should be a wake up call. K won't let them forget.

It does seem K was developing him late this half. Your prob right I could def. see it sooner than later. We need PG play.

Really when u get down to it we lost by 11 playing the absolute worst we could possibly play with a group of YOUNG guys that really just aren't ready and a of (who will be very good and showed flashes) that's has had little time with the guys. We will be alright but I do think we will take a few lumps before ACC play. I just hope we get it together and beat them heels

Hate to admit it -- but UNC would run both Duke & UK out of the gym tonight. If Marshall & Amile went 32 and 25 against UK, what in the world would Meeks, Johnson, Hicks and even James do. As much as I love the effort of our seniors, UNC's frontcourt is a lot better and deeper.

I may be mildly concerned about this groups fire, I just never ever saw excitement for the moment or the opportunistic big play or anything close to it!

It is a long year and Duke will grow and develop, but there wasn't a lot that was done well tonight. If I told you Ingram and Allen would combine for 10 points on 3-17 shooting, and that Duke would go 14-23 from the free throw line, I think many would be surprised that the deficit was under 20.

This should be a good teaching point for Allen. This was really his first big marquee game as the focal point, and there is no question he was forcing things and quite erratic. He was out of sorts as Bilas said. He will learn and grow from this. He still has all the tools.

Yes, UK is a nice team. But both of these squads would have gotten run out of the gym by last year's teams. Murray's good. But, with the exception of Ullis, not sure any of the guys starting tonight would have played over their counterparts from last year's team. I mean the three ancillary pieces of Duke's championship team (Jones, Plumlee, Jefferson) combined for 48 points and 25 rebounds and largely dominated the front court of UK. The game was lost b/c Allen played a shockingly bad game and the freshmen were atrocious. Aside from a few good moments for Thornton, the rest of the freshmen seemed in over their head.

Ingram's going to have better nights in the future. But got to say I'm concerned about his maturity level. Seemed to stop competing hard when things started going against him. As bad as Allen was -- and he was atrocious, at least I never felt as if he stopped trying.

Allen never stopped trying. But he needs some poise (besides skills too of course). Totally losing the shooting form and not able to make free throws showed mental weakness.

Ingram is more worrisome. Showed no heart on offense and defense. Any one can just zip right by him. Never saw him get in the proper defense stance.

To the victor go the spoils...and you can say what you like. We'll see how the rest of the season goes, and by that same token we'll take our chances with K.

That's fair enough. Good luck and hope you guys have a great season. Y'all have a great program and it was great to see the blue bloods playing each other tonight.

Glad to see its not just UK fans that melt down after a loss...LOL

I think you guys will be making another deep run this year. Hey, someone had to lose and it just happened to be you tonight. Its not the end of the season. Hope to see you again in March. Now beat the UL and UNCheats

The thing I think Allen has to learn is last year others made him better. He was a role player. Now we need Allen to make others better...he wasn't ready for that role against good competition tonight. I think he will come around.

I don't disagree at all. I actually think Carolina should be firmly number 1 now and the overwhelming fav to win it all and that hurts to say lol but what I saw tonight neither of those teams will be in the final 4

And I think Ingram was completely taken out of the game by the officiating and his foul trouble. Let's wait and see on him...

Last year, we had two rock solid ball handlers. We only have half right now in DT. Does not seem like an easy problem to solve for the rest of the season.

And I think Ingram was completely taken out of the game by the officiating and his foul trouble. Let's wait and see on him...

Maybe. But I think the bigger issue with him is that he's a 6'9 jump shooter who doesn't seem to have a particularly reliable shot. Maybe he's just struggling early in the year -- but he really has not excelled at the areas of the game that led his high school ranking to skyrocket towards the end of his high school career. If BI can't hit midrange jumpers over 6'4 players on a consistent basis -- he's not going to be all that good of a player. The reason BI kept getting charges is he's a 6'9 guy trying to drive by a 5'9-6'4 PGs. Not going to work.

And let's hookup at a game and share personal insults face to face, not on the board. And that's Mr. punk to you.

Just like UKorrupt was better last year too, right? LOL, 3 games in, and I remember a few years ago when UKorrupt fans were saying how early it was when they lost to Duke. Comical.
Funny thing is they were all saying it before this game, then when they win they're the best! Takes after slimball coach I guess

Maybe the difference is coaching.

Perhaps it is. Just like the final four last year, and 1991, and 1992, and 2001, and 2010. :)

It's great you won, but if you really came here to tell anyone Cal us the better coach, it's falling on deaf ears. The best coaches win these games at the end of the season, not the beginning. When Cal wins 4 more, let us know and we'll talk coaching. Thanks.

Looks to me like UK had simple game plan, keep Grayson from scoring and let the rest of the team beat you.

We were fortunate early that some of allens misses were rebounded for points, but barreling into the basket and ending up on the ground out of position was killing us. UK pushed the ball in those situations and got easy points.

Really loved seeing MO3 out there playing hard. Could be big year for him.

Excellent point here, I was shocked at how lackadaisical Ingram played. He's not strong with the ball and passes from his heels many times. Film session will be quite lengthy over next few days & game readiness will be hot topic.

Remember how intense last years team played during the game at Wisconsin, this team is no where close to that intensity.

Agree with Ingrams intensity. He has to step it up. I really dislike him in-bounding the ball. Someone with a quicker hand like Amile preferably. Grayson is not a PG and just cannot be treated as such any longer. I say, Thornton has to take his lumps now. I still have high hopes for him. Very proud of our Captains, Marshall and Amile really wanted it. Once Kennards timing catches up , he's gonna light it up.

It's an early season game. Yes, I was disappointed that we lost. Losing sucks. But UK was clearly the better team last night. They executed better and seemed more confident and comfortable from tip to the final horn. If had the feel of a true road game rather than a neutral site game.

We did not play well. Grayson was shut down/out of sorts/forcing the issue continuously. Ingram had foul trouble and didn't get it done. Our PG's looked like deer in the headlights the entire game. We had multiple jumpers and foul shots rattle out, especially in the second half. We shot horribly from the line. Our freshman in general struggled. Our transition defense was poor. Our ball pressure was weak.

All this, and we lost to the number 2 preseason ranked team in the country by 11 points. Amile looked good, Jones made some shots, and Marshal was a beast on both ends and even on the floor!

The sky is not falling. We will improve, and we have K on our side. There's a tough non-conference road ahead. Let's wait and see. Trust the system, trust K.

Oh yeah, and we won the 2015 National Championship, so there's that! :)

There seemed to be no rhythm to our offense, and was a bit surprised with Brandon's play. He was not agressive, lacked passion maybe it's his demeanor or maybe he has the jitters. Missed too many shots and free throws. I hope we can turn it around as we head to VCU.

In theory, Ingram is an excellent choice. Skilled 6'9 guy with long arms should be great at getting the ball in. With that said, Ingram was way too nonchalant last night on a couple of those inbound plays. He needs to play with a lot greater sense of urgency -- and that includes on those inbound passes. He just didn't really look all that alert on a couple of those plays, and then rushed something out there b/c he missed guys going through his progression. Ingram's going to have to rachet his intensity level up a lot if he wants to be anywhere near the player that I think his talent-level suggests he should be. Against high-level competition, talent alone isn't enough.

My wife was very upset with my comments to the TV last night. I had to turn it off with 10 minutes left. However to play as sorry as we did overall and only lose by 11 to the 2nd ranked team is not that bad. Intensity was terrible and we really need a point guard. I think if we learn to play together Esp: Defense we will be fine later in the year.

Well guys, let me just start out by saying that the best team won last night, period. Let me also say that the BB 101 class is in session on the Duke campus today, with a pretty good instructor heading up the class!
Since a lot of you have covered all the bad things that went wrong for Duke, I would like to give a few examples of what went right for Duke:

1. Marshall/Amile - How they played last night was huuuuuge! If they can continue that play for the rest of the year, staying healthy and out of foul trouble, Duke will be a Final Four team.

2. Duke just played the #2 team in the nation and played horrible, and only lost by 11

3. I really think we just saw the coming out of our soon to be point guard ("K" is bringing him along slowly). DT is very close to being where "K" wants him.

4. Our two (supposedly) best players had an horrific game, yes, that's Grayson & Brandon, and if you think that will be the norm for them, just sit back and watch as "K" works his magic with them.

I am still very excited about this young team, and I am also just really feeling bad for Grayson, but I also know that he will be back. Lots of lessons to be learned from this game, and imagine having an instructor like "K" to guide you. Don't have too many pity parties for Duke just yet ;).
Go Duke!!

When you say, UKorrupt, are you speaking about lance Thomas futures earnings shopping sprees and CO-RAY MUGHETTI/coach K strict liability issues?

That's just spelled NCAA favoritism, why do you call it corruption?

I'm sorry I had to please don't ban I BEG YOU:D

Excellent post, JCC! A lot of things went wrong, and Duke was still in the game almost to the very end. Better days are ahead!
