Duke MBB Media Day!

I am far from a conspiracy theorist, but one of the officials was Roger Ayers. I can't remember what exactly it was that I read but someone on another message board had some pretty compelling evidence about how he seems to have it in for Duke, particularly in certain big games.

Anyone else heard anything like that about him?

I am sure plays/calls/no-calls like that stick with guys, it's understandable.

End of the day Roach, Griffin and Keels combined 2 for 16 from 3 and lousy free throw shooting lost that game, not a missed call IMHO.

Water under the bridge though, let's get after THIS year!

Agreed it was just such a bad call. Hard to let that go…..

Bullet I have not heard anything on the record, but clearly it's true. Roger has it in for us- I still go back to the blocking call on Wendell Carter(5th foul) in the Kansas game of '18.

Ayres is just one of those guys like Jamie Lucky and Teddy Valentine you hate to see on a Duke game. Ayres had both Duke-UNC games at end of year (Durham and FF). Didn't seem right he had the FF game as well.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like Grandison is ahead of Proctor right now. Jon mentioned something about Proctor adjusting to the college game, which is quite different from Down Under. Of course I may just be imagining it, but Jon sounded very high on Grandison. Even if Grandison doesn't start I imagine he will get a lot of minutes. I like Proctor, Mitchell and Young off the bench, getting plenty of minutes. That is a well balanced bench. Schutt and Blakes occasionally.

I must have read the wrong articles because on the media day I saw where Jon said proctor has caught up with the rest of the team since arriving on campus and hasn’t missed a step and is ahead of where they thought he’d be at outside of strength and conditioning which they continue to work on .

also saw where CWell mentioned that Roach and Proctor would be the primary ball handlers with Grandison and Whitehead being secondary at initiating the offense .
I think we see Roach and Proctor start with Grandison playing in Whitehead’s spot until he’s healthy . Wasn’t much mention on Schutt and Blakes though.

Schutt and Blakes may only get time if their particular skills are needed. Blakes to defend a small guard or if there is an injury in the backcourt, Schutt against Syracuse or another team that packs in a zone against our big guys.

It's a long season with plenty of surprises and my guess is that these two will get chances to show their stuff and they will have to make the most of them.

Agree here, and I think both guys understand their roles.

If Proctor is a stud (meaning top 10 type talent) we could go back to the Final Four. He could be a difference maker. Proctor is kind of our x factor, along with Mitchell. If Proctor and Mitchell ball out then this class becomes one of our best ever. If Proctor is a good 3 point shooter that alleviates a lot of our shooting concerns. Lots of ifs in there, last year AJ and Keels were supposed to cure our shooting woes.

My one knock on Proctor since his reclass is that if you watch all his videos he utilizes the step back on all his jumpers . If he gains that separation on his step back he’s lethal . I do think teams will smother that space the difference between his Australian team and Duke. Should teams decide to cover him heavy their is an inside presence to kick into.
I actually believe having more guards on the floor allows Proctors game to flourish . This is where I think players like Schutt become valuable because how many teams can cover three true perimeter players with out doubling down on two inside players .

Jon did mention in one of his interviews that Proctor is adjusting to Div. 1 basketball. I have no doubt that Proctor will be good; it's just a question of when. I know he has played against older pros, but the pace may have been slower than high level college basketball.

I don’t think it’s the pace as much as the physicality. Proctor plays at a fast pace but can he play at the physical level of d1 athletes is he question. Also a lot more gets called in college and the NBA then FIBA ball .

I think it's a big adjustment. Which is what makes Proctor such an x factor. He could dominate or he could struggle mightily. My guess is he does well, but there will be a learning curve.

I actually don’t think there will be . I think the question is , with Roach being the clear leader on this team does Proctor do better coming off the bench as the second floor general or is he the starting combo that helps Duke thrive as usual with two pg’s on the floor .

I think Proctor will come off the bench but play a lot. I think it will always be him or Roach at the point, sometimes both. Roach is a small guy, I don't like the idea of him playing 35mpg. We should use our depth. We want Roach fresh for the stretch run.

So many people focus on who starts but that won’t mean much with this team. For example, Young may not start but he will get a lot of minutes…..probably as much as a starter on most teams.

I don't like taking much from scrimmages, but this clip makes me believe our current starting 5 is Roach, Proctor, Grandison, Flip, and Lively. I wouldn't be surprised if Whitehead isn't ready to return at the start of the season and this is the way we start for the first couple of weeks. That will give Proctor time to adjust, so I'm guessing Whitehead will eventually take Grandison's spot.

Agreed here. Think we will see that starting five to start the year and eventually Whitehead replaces Grandison.
