🚨 official game day thread game 1- Duke vs Maine 🚨

Good teams win, great teams cover.

I agree with the above posts about foster and proctor. We do pretty good with James in there as point. He can get in paint whenever he wants with his strength.

I think alot of our games will be like today's. We just wear out our opponents with our depth
I agree - in fact, I think we’re better with James in there - I’d take Proctor off the bench.

King was a top 10 player as a high school junior. He could ball. Personal issues derailed him. I agree Kon is more well rounded.

This early ? After playing against Maine and only one game ? see how he plays against Kentucky Arizona first .

My starting 5 would be Foster, Kon, Gillis, Cooper and Mal. Proctor, Sion, Brown off the bench.
That would be a good one. Proctor may show out next game so we have options and there will be a lot of games our second unit is going to look better than the starters. No other team has talent and experience of a Brown coming off the bench

Wow, you guys have soured on Proctor I guess.

He is our best individual defender. He has shut down RJ Davis at least twice.

He is a decent shooter and one of our best ballhandlers. I really like Foster, but I'm not sure he's any better of a floor leader than Proctor.

I like James too. But he's perfect to come off the bench and I suspect he was brought in with exactly that in mind.

I for one have not soured on Proctor.

But, I think he was very inconsistent last season, and he disappeared in some key games. I am hoping and perhaps even expecting that this is a breakout year for the young man! He is a gifted player, and I think he will settle in with the brightest lights being on our high profile freshmen!

I like Proctor. I just think he's a 20-25 minute guy rather than a 30 minute guy. But I'm not the coach. We have a very deep team. Other than Cooper we really don't need anyone playing 35 mpg. Jon will likely go with Proctor and Foster with Sion off the bench.

You do not need Cooper playing 35 minutes. Everyone is a 30 minute and under playing time roster. There will be games someone will get 35 minutes.

I’ll never sour on Proctor . I’m a firm supporter . I don’t think you can even think about taking him out of the starting lineup. He’s a pick and pop shooter and i would like to see him and Foster kinda switch positions. Foster can create quicker and get into the lane while I think Proctor is more of a facilitator while Foster is a scorer . Going to be an interesting season. Sion coming of the bench with Brown and Gillis helps keep both units experienced and poised .

Admittedly I’m a little biased against Proctor from the last 2 years. Seems to disappear at times, and somewhat soft. James came with a reputation for being tough and very energetic, which has been validated from the 3 times we’ve seen him play. We’ve been punked the last few years by a few teams, and i don’t see James letting that happen. Proctor, I’m not so sure.

What stood out to me
-I’m not big on proctor as a facilitator or finisher.
-Kon will be our leading scorer, reminds me of a bigger JJ redick who can do more, as another guy said
-Flagg looked like he was forcing the issue early and didn’t really jump out to me untill later when he was tenacious on defense. Hes great but besides that dunk, I wasn’t wowed. He looked to me frustrated . It’s game 1 no big deal he will be great .
-sion is as advertised and gonna be huge , especially later in the season. Great finishers, great body. Ugly looking shot though.
- foster looks like baby face nelson. He looked and played poised and confident. I like him more than proctor .
- Maluach didn’t look as dominant as advertised

Good Observation

I’ve noticed many times when maualach goes for a block that he swings wildly sort of like a spike in volleyball.

That will get him in could trouble quickly against quality competition.

Kentucky will tell a lot
They seem to think they will win over there. I think we win a close one. I am curious as to how we play when the 3's are not dropping.

Villanova loses to Columbia by 10. Ouch.
Power had 3 points in his debut. Stewart 8 points. Blakes did the best he had 12 points. Mitchell had 8 and shot poorly.

We forget he reclassed and came to Duke early . He was supposed to be in Fosters class. He also came from FIBA ball in Australia which isn’t known for its toughness. I’m just not on the boat that you start Sion over Proctor . I think Sion flourishes better coming off the bench as the main guard and first guard in .
Also trying to figure out who thought Mal would be dominant . He’s a work in progress with a lot of upside but will need to adapt just like Lively .

Mal looks further along than Lively at this point. But the next few weeks we will see. Proctor is a junior. How much time does he need? He will either take the next step or be who he is, which is decent.

I like nothing has been proven until we see our boys play Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas. Then we'll see if Kon can keep up the scoring against guys more athletic and as tall as he is, and how the other freshmen play against competition they haven't seen before. I'm guardedly optimistic, especially for Cooper who may have to adjust but will do so.

Agree Liftee. If there's a lot of attention put on Cooper and Kon, I hope others will be able to take advantage. If so, that will loosen things up for those two.

And it took Sion four years before he transferred to a blue blood . If that’s answers your question. You act like Sion didn’t play at the collegiate level for four years before coming to Duke . If he was a stud prior why was he at Tulane ? I mean seriously. Not to mention he started all four years there .
Lively was hurt at the start of the season . I don’t remember a whole lot of twenty and ten games for Lively . I simply remember Lively being a voice on the court and after games for preparation . Much like is being said about Mal. In the first three games ( two exhibition and one that counts ) how many balls were passed inside? How many lobs have been thrown ? He’s in the game for defense any offense he gives is extra .

But what’s not to say the team isn’t simply looking for those two ? Against Maine it looked like every play was going through Kon or to Flag to initiate a play .

Sion had NBA workouts last summer and is currently second round on some drafts. It's not like suggesting Proctor be our 6th man was some personal insult. Proctor will play 20-25 minutes either way. Sion can play; and has an NBA build. I think Proctor can start ahead of Sion, but he may need to improve to do that. Maybe he has. This summer I suggested Foster be our 6th man; but Foster has looked better so far. Still early of course. Kon seems to have the 3 spot locked up. To me so far only Kon and Cooper are guaranteed starters. Probably Mal as well. We have a lot of options.

I think knowing Sion is on the bench and ready to play is going to really motivate Caleb and Tyrese. And that's a great thing. Take a possession off and you may sit a while.

Same goes for Maluach. Brown brings a different dynamic and he needs to see the court for 20+ minutes a game.

And as the season goes on, Evans and Harris are going to be more ready to give valuable minutes if there's an injury, just as soon as they learn the defense.

What’s to say Sion even wants to start ? He can play alot more freely in the second unit and help keep the tone .
