I debated about starting this topic but maybe some of those that have a pulse on the program can shed a little light. I had read that Coach K was talking about gathering the needed info for guys like Carey and Stanley and their possible jump to the NBA. We have since see Tape commit and decommit from Duke. I was looking at a couple of mock drafts and it had Carey going anywhere from 26-30 and then read an article that said he has even slipped into the 2nd round of some drafts. Could we be looking at his return because of this. I know he could work on his game at the pro level but does the possibility of slipping to the 2nd round encourage him to bring that info back to Duke and work on his game there. A consistent jump shot maybe. This could move him up into more guaranteed money after next season. Has sitting at home drove me crazy, grasping at straws for his return. or is it possible that we have the beast one more year.

Anything is possible however I think Carey is gone. His game is built forvthe NBA and he can work on the things you mentioned in the league while getting paid but with that says who knows because there is no predraft workouts and the season was cut short .

I think the fear with Vernon is his conditioning. There is so much more running in the NBA and so many more minutes to fill. That and Vernon did not show that much awareness on defense this year.

I never felt for one minute Vernon would be back for a second year. I still don't. He needs to play against guys his own size and not be triple teamed all the time. I would find that very frustrating if I were he.

Reasons to go to the NBA:
-Money. though his dad played in the NFL, his family is fine.
-Achieving the dream of being an NBA player.
-This is considered the weakest draft in a while.
-To learn what it takes to be a pro: spend more time playing basketball, no schoolwork etc.

Reasons to come back to Duke:
-Never got to play in an NCAA tournament.
-Would be the favorite for National POY.
-Work on conditioning. Feel like he had an amazing year, but left so much on the table due to his poor conditioning.
-Maybe he genuinely likes being a college student.
-Improve his draft position but also losing a year being a pro meaning losing a year towards a bigger contract.

I still think he's gone. However, given the fact that Vernon is not a lottery lock or anything. Him coming back would not be nearly as insane as Jabari, Tatum, Bagley, Zion or any of our other OAD top pick studs leaving.

Only way he comes back is if Duke is paying him more than that rookie contract. He’s out of here. I wouldn’t mind second round if I were him. Shorter contract which mean if he does good that second contract comes soon.

I've seen some mock drafts that have him in the lottery. OFC

I have no expectations of him in a Duke uniform again.

Don’t get your hopes up guys.

I disagree. He's a big man that can shoot wide open threes, if anything I'd say he was built for the NBA 8 years ago but not today... most likely why he isn't projected in the lottery of most mock drafts.

Carey is gone. Anyone holding onto hope that he's coming back is delusional. Now, Hurt and Stanley....

Look he probably is gone but the fact that K said Tre was for sure gone and he didn’t say that about Vern means there’s a chance. Not a good chance but a very small possibility.

I don't think anyone knows anything. We don't even know if there will be a college basketball season next year, and if there is, it might be with no fans. No one knows when the draft will be, no one knows when the NBA season could possibly start next year.

I think anyone saying Vernon is for sure gone is probably right, but that is being said with zero evidence other than just assuming Vernon is like every other 18 year old basketball superstar who's goal is to play in the NBA.

IMO there IS a case to be made for Vernon coming back, there was never a case for any of our other OAD studs over the past 10 years.

You’re just saying studs so I’ll leave out guys like Duval, Frank Jackson and Gary who probably should have come back.

i think you could have made the case though for both Wendell and Cam- to your point though, those guys were both guaranteed lottery, so all you’re really saying to them is, come back, get better and be the man (Wendell would not have, Cam would) and increase your stock. Increasing your position in the lottery could have exponential gains on your contract. Either way, i think you’re right bc Vern isn’t considered by anyone right now a lottery pick.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but how does Ole Roy convince these guys to stay who are in a similar situation as our OAD's? Is it because Coach K is much stricter and tougher on players than Roy? It can't be just Roy's golden tongue. And I don't believe Roy pays them to stay.

He’s gotten a few of the elite talents in the last few seasons. Little and White, now Anthony.
He wasn’t getting the “top shelf” talent a few seasons ago.

But, NO other team gets the exposure that Duke gets. So we’re fortunate and cursed, to an extent.

We get all three back

I think that’s right. Blessing and a curse. No one gets our exposure like you said both publicity and opportunities. Kentucky is close but they don’t get the same press duke does. UNC next year will have more OAD talents, will be interesting to see the back tracking their fans do. Roy always recruited them, he just didn’t land them.

Vernon coming back seems like a long shot so i don't want to get my hopes up. Hurt and Stanley back and we should be preseason number one or darn close.

I would put Vernon in the top class of our freshman that were immediate All-ACC or All-American guys. Kyrie, Jabari, Jahlil, Ingram, Tatum, Bagley, Carter, Zion, and RJ. Of those guys, Vernon is the only one that is not a guaranteed lottery pick. It seems like Vernon isn't even a guaranteed first-rounder.

Vernon has to feel like he left some of his talents on the table when it came to showcasing his game this year. Not only referring to the missed tournaments, but just the limited minutes he played due to conditioning/defense.
Again, I think he's gone, but his situation going into decision time is much different than any other of our best freshman.

Yeah i agree. Think of what he did in 24-25mpg. Pretty impressive and despite it, somehow i still feel like he is flying under the radar. You’d think if he came back he’d be the hands down (Elton Brand) lock for preseason POTY.

we'll see soon enough, but maybe vern and the others wanted their shots at the acct and march madness....we'll see....

If I were Hurt I'd come back. I mean, if he's a borderline 2nd round pick this is not a good time for that. Worst case scenario and no basketball is played this winter he'd still be at Duke and have options. If he leaves and this happens....yikes. Vernon will likely go in the first round so if I were him I'd go.

Carey and Stanley coming back would be amazing. I'd start to worry about the season actually being played then ha.

I wanna say every single person said the same thing about TJ last year....except me lmao
Every one said it about Tre last year and every one said it about Grayson after his sophomore and junior years. I mean yes it’s very unlikely but it’s annoying when people act like it’s not a possibility. I’ve fine with people saying that about for sure lottery picks but Vern, Cassius, and Hurt aren’t even for sure 1st rounders. Again, I’m not saying it’s likely but there’s a small chance.

I sure hope we somehow get Vernon back. Especially now since Garrison Brooks announced he was coming back. UNC is going to have the best frontcourt in the country next year. Bacot, Brooks, Sharpe, Kessler, and Manley. We might not get a rebound against them lol

Have we ever had a One & Done player that could realistically go anywhere from late lottery to mid 2nd round?

Vern could be like Nas Little was last draft.. last one in the lottery seating.. he should come back just to avoid that uncomfortable possibility lol.

But.. I say 98% chance he’s gone.. and the 2% is really only because his Dad made almost $37 million in the NFL.. so he probably doesn’t need the money right now.

He wasnt getting a lot of the "top shelf talent" because the cheating factory was being investigated. (Brandon Ingram is an excellent example). Once the allegations were WRONGFULLY DISMISSED, the storm clouds lifted and he's pulled in several of the elite talents. Won him what 10-11 games this year??? Lol....OFC

I think Roy is the classic BS'er, and its helped him keep some talent....For instance after the freshman year of James Michael McAdoo, the young man returned to campus to tell 'ol Roy he was headed to The League.JMM had talked to his parents and the decision had been made. After a final talk w/Huckleberry, McAdoo called his parents and told them he would be staying at UNC...

Roy of course arranged a $100,000 a year "JOB" for Tami Hansbrough to help keep her son at UNC 4 years. I put nothing past the man, and revel in the pitiful outcome karma dealt him this season. OFC

Getting back OT, I cant imagine Vernon returning, think Stanley is 50-50, but see Hurt as a bulked up Blue Devil next season... OFC
