Ummm….GTHC GTH!!!

Read some of the Carolina board. They seem to think the reason they are ahead of us is we were paying players and they weren't, so we had a smoother transition. They actually think they run a clean program, which is hilarious. They seem to think we have been playing players since 99. I read the same things repeatedly on other boards. I don't think that is true, but several things have bothered me over the years.
1. The Lance Thomas jewelry loan. While a senior, he was loaned how much? 30 thousand (actually 100k) for jewelry from a jewelry store in NYC. This seems insane considering he was a borderline NBA pick at that time. It just seemed sketchy. If he was declared ineligible our title could have been stripped like USC.
2. The Zion's parents house. Any other program does this and I would suspect they are dirty. USC got slammed for doing this with Reggie Bush.
Sorry to bring this up but these two things and maybe some Bagley being paid rumors have always bothered me. I give us the benefit of the doubt; but if I were not a Duke fan I wouldn't. I guess it doesn't matter now with NIL, but it does make me wonder sometimes. Any thoughts? Is it just opposing fans jealousy? I've never really gotten any answers other than the NCAA looked into it and dismissed it.

In regards to the Lance Thomas thing, I live in an area where there are alot of IU/UK/Louisville fans and they always bring that up. I don't know what's true, but what I do know is Lance Thomas was a role player (an amazing role player in 2010) but still just a role player, why would K risk everything for a role player???
It is fact that Zions family went from a 150K home to a 900K home when he played at Duke, but guess what? They stayed at that home after Zion left Duke too. Loans exist, no different than Lebrons mom taking out a car loan to get a H2 back in the day. When you know millions are on the horizon, why should you wait??

None of this bothers me. What would bother me is if we didn't land Zion or Bagley or any of the other top recruits we were battling for.

To sum everything up. I think this is a combo of opposing fans jealousy and also Duke/K doing whatever it takes to win at the highest level, but still doing things within the "rules." And those "rules" were outdated once basketball players became celebrities, so like 1980?????

Also every school has accusations like this. Ask any Kentucky fan about how their players for 30+ years always had a brand new Lexus driving around campus, and most of those kids came from families that could never afford one.

Chris,

I don’t think Coach K would do anything “dirty” to tarnish his reputation of being THE GOAT of Coaching Men’s College Basketball. It’s just jealousy from Unc and Kentucky fans. Coach K led the 2009-2010 Duke Team to become National Champions.

Lance Thomas played his way to getting drafted in the 2nd round with his play his Senior Year. Before Lance’s Senior Season he was not sniffing the nba.

I meant no disrespect. Maybe I just frequent rival boards too much. It's not something I usually think about unless it gets brought up.

the second page of this forum is elite. Gary getting called out for calling literally everything "thug ball," including Duke.

I can agree with you here Chris. My beef is Duke fans thinking we are the only clean program, and everyone else is the dirty ones. The game has changed so much over the last 10-15 years, that is it possible a coach finds ways to get players to their school, that never were thoughts before?

So we’re dirty but Will Graves literally rented a house from Roy Williams ? With what money especially in the Chapel Hill area ? Ain’t no part time job paying that rent .
Lance Thomas loan was for 100,000 in jewelry and was investigated by the NCAA when the report came out . He had a degree from Duke and was already doing team work outs for the NBA when it was published. People give loans for stupid reasons especially when there is free advertising involved . Lance went on to make good money with the Nets and played better then many thought . This is why I don’t go to other boards . People forget the article leaked by a Kentucky player ( supposedly it was John wall) that his couch literally set up expense accounts for clothes and food and car rentals )

True but Thomas got the loan halfway through his senior year when we played at MSG. Thomas wasn't Zion guaranteed to make millions; that is like a loan for a small house in some states. I can't imagine Coach K knowing about this; it would set off red flags everywhere for a college student to spend that on jewelry.

K was brought up to speed on it . When I was 18 years old I walked into Fredman’s jewelry. Got a 20 inch cubin link with matching bracelet and a matching black onyx ring with a diamond in the middle and a 3,000 dollar Rolex all on credit . Walked out the store with it ( a course the ring had to be fitted) . I worked at a distribution center at the time selecting grocery making 45,000 a year. All with no money down. The gold was 10 carat . Trust me I also did not attend Duke university and wasn’t on tv for four years .

You can be college student and have 0 common sense.

And there is the answer. The first thing Jon did when NIL was approved was hired a gm to capitalize on the players NIL worth . Smartest move . But that still isn’t going to solve Davis’s problems.
Hubbie needs to be worrying more about if he's going to be the HC at cheat next year. LOL...

Jon was the first to hire a GM, then I believe KU followed suit not long after Jon. GREAT MOVE on Jon's part!

I agree it won’t solve Hubert’s problems, but I think it assured he will be back at least one more season.

My favorite UNC comment lately has been that Duke basketball had a 25M dollar budget while UNC basketball had a 3M dollar budget.

For the record...OSU football had the highest NIL budget this past season and that was 20M....for football.

Our players might have accumulated 25M collectively through outside collectives (Flagg with Gatorade and New Balance for example) but they didn't get anywhere close to that from the school and NIL donors.

He may not be the best coach in the business, but talent will override some of his shortcomings. The "Carolina Way" is outdated. It had a good run.

Yeah the "Carolina Way" ended when they started making them go to class.
