Tyus Jones's future

I just listened to Stones on the Offseason podcast. He is an incredibly bright young man. I've been trying to sell Tyus as a future top 5 point guard in the league here on DI, and no one has been buying. I can understand the reticence.

Now Minnesota has finally dealt Rubio and added a lockdown defender and scorer in Butler. My theory all along is that Minnesota was intentionally underusing Tyus to ensure they could resign him for pennies. His 'per 40 minutes' stats are already fantastic and he just drank his first legal beer last month. I will continue to portend the second coming of John Stockton. I think two years from now Minnesota will be starting Tyus, Butler, Wiggins, (some free agent shooter forward) and Towns.

The Wolves are looking to add Jeff Teague or even George Hill, so I don't think they're looking to thrust Tyus in in the next couple of years, but they are showing some form of confidence by getting rid of Rubio and Dunn.

Like you said, his per 40 stats are wild and he now has more scoring options around him. I'd love for him to get a decent running mate in the bench. The Wolves are about to be a problem.

But as long as Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry, Isaiah Thomas, John Wall, Dennis Schroder, Jrue Holiday and Ricky Rubio keep drawing breath in this Earth I have a hard time seeing Tyus as top 5.

I do see him, Dejonte Murray, Markelle Fultz, DeAngelo Russell, Elfrid Payton and Dante Exum as the future of the position though.

Don't count out Kyle Lowry to the Wolves either. Bottom line is that Tyus isn't in their plans (at least as a starting pg) at the moment.

True. I meant to list him too, but I can't see Toronto letting him walk without plans for a young, talented point guard in place.

I believe they are pretty high on him. We will know whether I'm correct in summer 2018, as they'll have a team option at 2.4 million for a fourth year. I believe they'll offer him another 3 or 4 year contract at ~3.5 million per year or whatever he'll draw from the market.

I'm probably in the minority on Tyus as well Duke Denver. To me he has what you can't measure, the ability to win. He can't jump the highest, he's not the quickest or the strongest, but give me Tyus in the last 5 minutes of a game and let him go to work. He just goes into another gear. Barkley and Kenny Smith even bragged about him last season. He has a set of stones that should be hauled around in a wheel barrel

Thats the dang truth. I think about him draining that 3 in front of our bench at Charlottesville (the start of 8 is enough) and I get chills.When Tyus Jones makes his mind up his team is going to win, mark it down!

Exum is in Shaun Livingston territory. Great start to his career, year ending injury, stuck behind a couple of veteran point guards in a system that may or may not tailor to his skill set. He has nice length and athleticism, plays excellent defense and is a jump shot away from being a dangerous player. His decision making is poor, but that will improve with time. This could be a pivotal year for him as I believe it's his last option year.

He's finishing the game @ San Antonio right now. Teague hasn't played in the 4th. Tyus helped them make it a game.

He is always a liability on defense in the paint, but he does keep the offense moving. I don't like him and Crawford in together.

Butler looked rough.

I love Tyus. But Teague is better. He should have played the last six minutes....and not Tyus.

Yeah, I'm not sure what was going on there. Clearly Thibby was sending a message. Tyus will have to do better next time he gets the nod. He looked nervous on offense.
 
Didn't see the game, but Tyus should always play when the game is on the line.
 
I didn't watch a second of the game either, but a cursory glance at the box score shows some very modest stats for Tyus, but his +/- was +9, while Teague's was -17 in roughly the same amount of minutes.

That obviously doesn't indicate Tyus is a better player, or even an equal, but could explain why he was on the floor at crunch time.

Teague is definitely the more athletic of the two, but in my opinion, when in the game, everyone around Tyus will be better. He is a true point guard, and he has that "it factor" that isn't measured.
If given the reigns, a team is going to be better the more he plays.

It very well could indicate that Tyus was playing against backups and Teague against starters. Either way though, happy for Tyus.

I don't really understand why everyone is penciling in the T-Wolves to make the playoffs. It was the same story last year, and they finished below 500. Understand they added Butler, which is huge because the T-Wolves downfall was defense last year. But I think they will finish right around the 500 mark and maybe grab a 7 or 8 seed. Wiggins is horrible defensively and it makes zero sense because he has all the tools.

I didn't watch the game so I have no clue. Posters above did say he played virtually all the minutes down the stretch, which I would assume would be against the first team - those "crunch time" minutes.

I think they’ll get it together. They have some serious talent and it’s talent that is only gaining experience. Thibs can teach D and if the buy on happens from Wiggs with Butler there as a locker room leader, they’ll get it and put it together.

Yep he did play those crunch time minutes. I watched the whole game, other than the 4th, Tyus mainly played with/against backups, but definitely exciting he was awarded the crunch time minutes.

I don't know how the Spurs win without Kawhi, Pop could win 60 games with some yarn and popsicle sticks.

He's definitely the more 'true' point guard. I don't think he's better than Teague, though. Tyus didn't shoot the ball well last night in crunch time which hurt him.

It's not just Butler. Both Wiggins and KAT are a year older, but still only 22 and 21, respectively....and future stars, to boot. They also added Jeff Teague, Taj Gibson and Jamal Crawford. I'd be really disappointed if they don't win 45+ games this season, minimum.

I agree that Teague is more talented, at least from an individual standpoint. I'm probably biased with Tyus, but I truly see him as a better team player, one that will look to get others going, but he also has that knack for becoming bigger and better when needed, and I think a better gauge on Tyus will be to see how the team is a month from now with him getting good minutes. Personally I think the more he plays, the better the T Wolves will be.

I know this is pointless, but I strongly think if Tyus would have stayed 3-4 years at Duke. The Blue Devils would have been in the Final 4 at least 3 Times during his time at Duke. Imagine him and Allen in the backcourt along with our good stretch 4s recently (Ingram and Tatum) also throw in Kennard, Jefferson, and MP3.

Sure. If we could have any "1 and done" stay multiple years, Tyus is a great argument for the one we would want.

With that said though, imagine other schools like UK and Davis. We definitely aren't alone here.
 
I heard Atlanta threw a party when they no long had to deal with Jeff Teague. I guess he's a strange, entitled one.

Teague didn't play defense and it pissed off Thibs. Tyus hustled. We'll see how it plays out.
