Marcus Paige? Ingram has such incredible length and is apparently quite quick. If he were given the task of shutting down Paige, could he? UNC is getting lots of publicity as being one of the top clubs in the country. But the engine that drives the Tar Heels is Paige. If he is shut down they are in trouble. Although it might be an unorthodox tactic, could Brandon Ingram pull it off if asked to?

Marcus is a good college player..... But not the type we should be losing sleep over... Especially in October. I knew of Marcus from his high school days and he is what I thought he would be. "Just" a good college player. Hopefully I continue to be right. He just doesn't scare me

I don't like him, but Paige is better than "just" a good player....even though I wish that wasn't the case.

I'm not sure he's the All-American some people thought two years ago, but he's still pretty damn good. Paige and B. Johnson kind of are what they are....for the Heels to be really good and national championship good they need Jackson and Berry to be significantly better than last season. And Jackson was already pretty decent.

Matt Jones is an incredible defender. He spent as much time guarding Sam Decker as Winslow did. He is long versatile, and he is also experienced and mature. Whoever has the misfortune of having to draw him is going to have a long game. Now he isn't as big of a liability on offense anymore now either.

Yeah, I'll go with Matt being the Paige stopper. Of course I'm sure Marcus will get his share of calls and could get Matt into foul trouble. But we've got enough bodies to throw at him to make him work.
And I firmly believe that Paige is an excellent player. His sophomore season was quite incredible. Last season he wasn't as good, but it does seem he was hampered by an injury.

He's a great 3 point shooter, and takes a ton of them. I would try to run him off the 3 point line and make him take 2's or drive to the basket and have to finish over some length. But he does make clutch shots, and he's the last player I want to take a meaningful shot for the Heels.

I'm not at all sure what to expect of Brandon on defense, so I'll say no.

Even if Matt Jones guards him, I doubt he'll be completely shut down. Though I share the sentiment that Matt would be the most likely of our players to fulfill this role.

He shut down Sam Dekker who's a much much better player and athlete. Paige is good, don't get me wrong, but Matt has shut down better players, so he'd get my nod.

I'm just curious what is considered shutting down Marcus. 15, 20, 25 or 30 points?

Whats your opinion?

I think anything under 20.

The only question I'd have is why? Brandon is going to a leading scorer. Is Matt? I don't think so. Why put the burden on Brandon to stop Marcus when it would limit the options for scoring opportunities on turnovers and fast breaks. Not the best distribution of skills on the floor.

To answer your question, I think that would play away from what you want and into what UNC wants.

I think Marcus is a bit faster than Ingram and obviously smaller. Do you really want your 6'9? guy chasing a smaller guy through multiple screens and taking him even moreso out on the perimeter against a 3 point shooter?

Just doesn't seem like an ideal situation to me.

If Paige is Carolina's best player this year, the heels don't sniff the FF. This Carolina team has a lot of "really nice players" but no one you lose sleep overcame planning for. Paige hasn't played hard for a full game in his entire 3 year tenure and Roy Williams is still their coach

Great question. In watching this group of Tarheels last year it appears that they only play as well as Paige plays as their playmaker and key scorer. If he is thwarted the Heels are in trouble as they sputter and flounder.

Definitely not the match-up Duke would prefer. Nor UNC the other way, as I would think Paige would have little hope checking the 6'9 Ingram. Its not a match-up I see coming to pass beyond some brief moments after switches.

I think it's a little deeper than that. What if he had 10 points but 8 assist? I wouldn't at all say that's shut down.

I would say 10 points or less would be a shut down.

One thing if Marcus tried to drive on Brandon, Brandon's length and athleticism can compensate for A LOT I believe. I could see him get burned off a drive but recovering to make a highlight reel block from behind. Still not an ideal situation at all.

Marcus is a hard fellow to predict. He can wow you and then he can just underwhelm you. Not sure what he will bring to the table for the Heels this year.

Nobody can shut down Marcus Paige but HOF Coach Roy Williams and Paige himself. OFC

This^. I don't believe it would even be a consideration to put Ingram on Paige, simply because of the experience and quickness of Paige. No contest and pretty positive we won't see the matchup. Matt Jones will be the first option in man defense, and a couple others will probably get a shot to relieve Jones, to both wear Paige out and make him work hard, plus a fresh body on him.
Duke had the most success on Paige when they used Quinn and denied Paige the ball. When he couldn't deny him, he made him work extra to get the ball. The same will happen this year.
Let's not underestimate the ability of Paige. We don't have to like him but it would be wise to respect his ability.
Go Duke!!

Just because you are being covered by them on the offensive side doesn't mean you are covering them on the defensive. Lol. There is 100% no way in hell they have paige every covering Ingram even if Ingram is covering him. lol
