With the caveat that I hope this doesn't come back to byte us in the butt one day (i.e., we don't have to play them next year), I'm actually happy for Izzo and the Spartans. He's too good of a coach IMO to not be getting more top-rated kids and I think it would have been a waste for Swanigan to go play in some type of weird package deal at Cal just b/c he made a couple friends on the AAU circuit (b/c I'm not sold at all on Cuonzo Martin as a coach).
And, frankly, I think Swanigan is a far better fit at MSU than he is here. When I watched him play, I think he has a long way to go to have the type of movement and athleticism we need to play our style of defense or to be an effective offensive player -- and he really doesn't bear much resemblance to any player that we've ever had here (maybe a slower, more lumbering version of Shelden Williams). However, I think he clearly fits the Derrick Nix mold of big guys that MSU has long been able to use effectively. While I'm obviously a bit concerned about our post depth, I think the kid probably made the right decision.
