Lefty Driesell was really a great coach and probably doesn't get enough credit with his Maryland teams when only 1 team from the ACC could go to the NCAA tournament. But he was the coach that started what was later known as Midnight Madness.

I always liked Lefty’s teams as a kid. I use to love to watch Len Bias play.

It was always a circus when Lefty came to Cameron. He loved the place and we loved him (but gave him a very hard time). I was at Duke during the lean years (71-75) but the epic Mongoose game came right in the middle. Lefty was not happy that day.

Gary Melchioni went wild, 30+ points and we won on the regionally telecast "ACC GAME OF THE WEEK!" Jim Thacker and Billy Packer on the call, and probably Coach Bucky Waters biggest win. Maryland came to Durham ranked in the Top Ten.
