I tried to look this up but, admittedly, didn't want to spend all day, so I figured I'd ask the experts...You Guys! Can anyone provide a complete list? Thanks in advance,

I would have liked to see Dick Groat play. I know he ended up a Pittsburgh Pirate and lettered in 3 sports at Duke. He must have been some athlete.

Here's the thing about retired numbers guys. We've had lots of great players with more to come. We can't run out of numbers. There is a standard for retired numbers and I think it's a good one to go by. Now what I would like to see is maybe for the lack of a better term is to have circle of honored numbers such as Singler, Banks, Alarie, Denton , Lewis and others who might not have been NPOY, DNPOY or other honors but still are worthy of special recognition. I'm not talking about all their jersey's being hung up in the rafters like down in Chapel Hill but just perhaps the number they wore going around CIS in a prominent place. Until they start letting more numbers being allowed to be worn then we have to keep enough for the team. OFC

I think Singler probably has the best argument for his number being retired. But even still, he didn't meet all of the required guidelines to qualify.

In a way I agree with skysdad that I think there might be something additional we can do to honor other players. Let's face it, while maybe not retirement-worthy by Duke's high standards, guys like Singler, Scheyer and Nolan belong somewhere. Two of the three are 2,000+ scorers (Nolan was mid-1900s) and all three are national champions. What Nolan has over two of them are national awards.

As much I loved our recent freshman class, I don't think this should apply to them, though. I still think certain requirements like All-ACC, maybe team captain, member of a champion of some kind, but most importantly, a Duke graduate is considered. After all, that's ultimately what this is supposed to be about.

I agree with that sentiment. I actually really like it that Duke has such high standards when it comes to retiring jerseys. It is probably the toughest place in the country to get your jersey retired, and if you do it really, really means something. That being said, I think it would be nice to have some way of formally honoring guys like Singler and Scheyer who were truly Duke greats, but were never a NPOY or record setter and thusly don't have their numbers hanging in Cameron. They could create some sort of "ring of honor" type scenario maybe.

"Though there is no ‘official’ criteria to have a jersey retired at Duke, a player must achieve at a national level — earn National Player of the Year or National Defensive Player of the Year honors, set an NCAA record, win a gold medal representing his country in the Olympics or earn All-America recognition."

This is from the Duke media guide. I think we've posted this a few times. Kyle, Jon, Duhon, Gene Banks, Jim Spanarkel and Bob Verga are probably the closest to being nominated, but all are lacking certain criterion.

I've posited for a while that the one thing UNC has ever done the right way is their honoring of jerseys. A lot of people love pointing out that there was no Duke before K, but there is clearly a storied history of Duke basketball and one easy way to acknowledge that are banners in the rafters. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the basketball museum, but for the casual observer, some of the guys we remember get lost.

I'd love to see a Duke National DPOY again. It's been a while.

Good post and thanks for mentioning Spanarkel and Verga. OFC

Duke might be the only school in the country where a player has won NPOY and doesn't have his jersey retired (Brand - did not graduate). But, there is nothing wrong with standards.

On a side note, I wonder if Brand will finish his Duke degree now that he has retired. I know he doesn't necessarily need it financially or otherwise, but his jersey would be retired once he did and that (along with having his Duke degree) is a pretty cool thing.

elton brand #42 if he comes back and finishes his degree since he just retired
