Off-season thoughts

The sad reality is if a school wants to have a chance to compete at a high level, they're going to have to open their checkbook. It's that simple. Coaching plays a role, but really only when they're playing another high payroll program. NC State brought in the best guy they think fits the times we are in.

Sounds like I'm describing the NBA.

My thing is that is almost Cooper Flagg money, which was believed to be 4.8 million NIL earnings last year. He was the best player in college basketball and most of it came from endorsements.

I'll keep watching because I am invested in seeing Jon win Natty's and prove all the naysayers wrong, and I love Duke. Plus, we still get good kids. This was the most fun I have had watching college basketball in a long time, and I think we see the blueprint of what Jon is trying to do, so I am not ready to pack up my bags and say the hell with it yet. All that being said, it is very frustrating to watch what has happened and continues to happen with college basketball.

I’ll watch. I love college basketball.. it’s my sports passion and it’s not even close. I don’t like the nil and money games but I also believe it was going on before just behind the scenes and to a lesser extent

I see Mac's point about this affecting his enjoyment of the game. I was at that point this year as we had almost an entirely new team. I did start buying in about halfway through the season, mainly due to the way the team playing so unselfishly and locked in on D. Plus they were really, really good. But I also remember last year, a team that did not seem to like each other or play team ball at times. That team did manage to make an elite eight run but it came very close to imploding. It was frustrating to put that much energy into cheering for a team only to have most of them hit the portal. It's hard to say if this past year is the new norm or if we caught lightning in a bottle. 4 or 5 guys back seems like a good goal, and some portal players for experience. We did have great luck in the portal, with Brown and Sion being better than expected. That does not always happen, portal guys seem to be hit and miss.

I can’t blame Evans at all if he leaves for 4 million dollars. NIL is way out of control, I know I would take the money and run if I was 19 years old. The future is an unknown and one bird in the hand is better than two in the bushes.
I understand, but I hope he understands the risk of leaving a program like Duke too. Does it hurt him in the long run. It’s about getting to the NBA and having a long career.

I do want Evans back, but I also am wondering if Ament would be a better fit. Evans is a gunner, which is nice when you come off the bench but if he is taking 15 plus shots a game it may affect team chemistry.

I want Evans as well but everything is saying is either Evans or ament which I don’t get becuase you can Isaiah at the 2. I think it comes down to defense which Jon is obsessed with. Maybe he doesn’t want two guys on the court that look 90lbs soaking wet

I agree dukesince91. Yes, it's completely out of control, but $4M is a lot of money. I don't know all these players' family or financial backgrounds, but $4M could go a long way in setting a young man and his family up. Indeed the future is uncertain.

Still stinks though if it happens. :(

Not sure much guarding would be going on.

4 million is a lot and I don’t and wouldn’t think bad of the kid for taking it . Right now I’m blaming the NCAA and wish theyed figure something out . 4 million is right at what Bronny got for a four year contract with the Lakers .

That's what I don't get either.

Proctor or Foster PG
Evans SG
Ament SF
Boozer PF
Pat or Maliq C

Only other reason I'm seeing is both Proctor and Foster returning which pushes Evans to SF which he may not want to play that position or he thinks he may get bumped to the bench again by Ament if we get him.
