Off-season thoughts

Wright is 6-2 and averaged 11.5 points and 4 steals in 29 minutes. The statement from Baylor sounds like his decision caught them off guard and they thought he was staying. He had 24 points and 6 assists against Kansas. I say hell yeah. Not if it drives Proctor out the door but that decision may already be made.
too small

Heartbreaking conversation between me and my 83 year old dad. He is going on and on about how good we looked. He says there is no way Duke loses to Florida. He does not go online much and is still fixing up his house. I am like dad Duke lost. He turned the game off when were up 9. Ugh.
So sorry Chris. 🙏🏻

My guess.
Flagg, Kon, Mal and Proctor turn pro .
Foster leaves for the portal. Cayden is a combo guard and I do think Jon brings in a pg with upperclassman leadership.
I think Cameron plays mainly at the 4 next year.
One of Big Pat or Brown might hit the portal, just my opinion.
Harris -gone for the portal
Evans returns as Dukes starting sg.
Khamenia power forward off the bench and Henderson could start at the sf spot .
Have to think that the staff addresses rebounding and defense again this off season .
I’m not sure Khamenia is a power forward, at least yet. Watching the McDonalds game, he seemed clearly overmatched inside, both on O and D. If Harris couldn’t get PT this year, he sure won’t. Unless he has a killer outside shot, which you couldn’t tell from that game.

I’m hoping for 6. Proctor, Evans, Foster, Brown, Big Pat and Harris. Fingers crossed
A crushing loss can unite a team or tear it apart. Guess we see which this week. I am hoping for 5 guys back.
I'm hoping for 5... Coop, Kon, Proctor, Pat and Maliq 😇🤞

Edit...make it 6.. Forgot about Maluach

He’s a hybrid 4 (sf/pf) but I believe he played pf in high school. Not sure he had the lateral quickness to play SF for lengths of time .
Thought his shot looked good on the three point challenge and in the skills or whatever they call it now challenge. He beat out Cayden .

He’s 100% gone. Spoke with his family on the plane flight back from SA yesterday. They’d all love to come back but with where they’re going to be drafted they don’t really have a choice.
Always love the line "we don't have a choice". Actually, you have more choices available to you than most people. I've got zero prob with anyone going pro, but "we don't have a choice" is right up there with "it's not about the money". It's always about the money and only about the money.

Again, no prob with the choice to go pro, but very disingenuous to say you don't have a choice{s}.

Definitely need Malik, Ngongba and Evans back. But who knows what offers they get.

The Boozer bros are starters so you can pencil them in.

Will Ngongba come back if he thinks John will go with Cam Boozer at C? Or would John use Ngongba and Boozer both? That seems a bit of a challenge given the way Duke plays. and if Ngongba is a sub where does that leave Malik?

Will Malik accept another reserve role? Will Ngongba with Malik and Boozer?

Jon is going to have to be willing to play a different game with essentially two big men if he is going to retain Ngongba and Brown. So, to say both are 100% would be a misnomer. And he has to sell that vision to those two if we are to retain them. But Boozer and Ngongba could be quite a duo if we play them together. And rotate Malik.

Proctor is an enigma at this point. If he goes pro he doesn’t get a guaranteed deal. His shooting is suspect or “fragile” at best in college and the NBA line is even further out. Plus he shoots from his chin. If he goes pro he is looking at G league or #13 on the bench and unlikely to make as much as in college.

I would like Caleb back. But both he and Proctor need serious shooting work. Caleb can handle the ball. And he played his guts out the last few games he got a chance.

But we really need a 2 guard / swing 3 who can shoot the rock and play physical defense. I don’t see either Proctor or Caleb doing that. So we need to hit the portal for that.

Evans can shoot and he played hard. But he’s kind of out of control on the floor and needs to get a lot stronger and more physical if he wants to go further. In 4 years he could be a killer NBA 3 point man but still has a ways to go physically. Can he had 10 lbs of muscle in 4-5 months?

I don’t think anyone knows what we have in Harris.

Next play unfortunately. Three thoughts

1. Who returns?

2. Who comes in?

3. Who takes Jai seat on the bench?

My guesses-
1. Evans, Pat, Brown come back 100%
Proctor comes back or goes pro- 60/40 return/leave
Foster- 80% tramsfer
Everyone else 100% gone

2. No clue

3. Jay Williams

It’s been written in stone for some time. He’s going to be top 8-15. No way does he pass up being a lottery pick in the NBA. Even with NIL the money is bigger in the NBA and you can add endorsement deals on top of that.

Maluach, Flagg, and Knueppel are locks for the NBA. All 3 have contributed excellent ball at Duke and I wish them grand success. Will be rooting for all 3 big time in the NBA

Not sure why everyone is calling for a PG.

Cayden Boozer is a PG and is the likely starter. If we got Foster back that would be ideal as a backup ball handler.

We need a 2 G who can shoot. Ideal if he can also handle the rock as well and play physical D. Preferably an upper class man with physical toughness and mental maturity. Akin to Sion but more consistent from 3.

This is from 247:

Boozer is a lead guard with terrific size and an extremely advanced ability to read and think the game. He has very advanced instincts and feel for the game. He sees the floor, feeds the post, dictates his own pace, and almost never gets sped-up. He’s as reliable as it gets in high school basketball with the ball in his hands, continuously posting better than 3:1 assist-to-turnover ratios. This year in the EYBL it was 6.6 assists against 2.1 turnovers. Earlier this summer it was 6.3 assists vs. 1.7 turnovers with the 17-and-under national team in FIBA play. Last year, it was 6.7 assists vs. 1.4 turnovers on the Nike E16 circuit.

Physically, Boozer doesn’t distinguish himself with his length or explosiveness, but with his positional size and strength, measuring at just under 6-foot-5 and 210-pounds this summer. He leverages his size well, understands how to use his body, and benefits from his ability to see over top of smaller defenders as a passer. He’s also a very good perimeter rebounder.

Defensively, he lacks ideal footspeed in certain match-ups, particularly when extended away from his help against smaller and quicker guards, but he has versatility up the line-up and a good understanding of where to be on the floor. He understands rotations, shows good anticipation (2.6 steals per game in FIBA player), and is opportunistic with his hands.

Offensively, in addition to his ability to run the show, he reads ball-screens well, has an instinct for how to cut away from the ball, and is crafty in the lane with a full assortment of finishing tricks. His shooting, while improved, remains an important long-term variable. He tends to push his release from his shoulder a bit. He made 40% of his threes and 75% of his free-throws last year in E16 play, but saw that dip to 29% and 75% this year in the EYBL.

What can’t be quantified with measurements or stats, at last at this stage, is the extreme impact on winning and the true love for the game. Boozer’s legitimate passion for the game comes in correlation to his aptitude for it. His history of winning, alongside his brother, is also undeniable with three straight state championships in Florida as well as three straight Nike EYB championships in the E15, E16, and EYBL divisions.

I’m not sure of the fit but wondering if we have any interest in Eddie Lampkin.

Good size, pretty good game.
How does he have any eligibility left? This was his 5th season. I thought this was the last year for extra Covid years.

This year's roster construction was brilliant. Jon knew we had several freshmen in key roles and focused on portal players who would complement them on the court with their skill sets & team-first mindsets, and off the court with their maturity. He also emphasized size.

We had good size 10 deep this year. If we get Pat back and any one of Proctor, Foster, or Evans, we have good foundational size at 2 positions, and all 4 current recruits also have good positional size. It will be rare that we will have 2 guys as versatile and big as Coop & Kon, but we stand to have good size next year regardless. I like our chances for some quality portal players this year and trust Jon's eye for who will be a good fit. It's hard to imagine having a roster as well constructed as this year's, though.
