I guess this means no year two of Kyle haha. He should improve a lot as the year goes on. Mitchell has looked better so far, but it is early. Looking forward to seeing him play.

I'm open to this analysis. We shall see. It's good to have this report about a Dukie. I would still like for Flip and Lively to become good friends with the weight room.

Yea but it's really hard to put on good weight fast. Both guys will eventually put on 20 or so pounds but it most likely will be after already being in the pros for a couple of years. The best strategy this year might be to try to draw bulky 5s like Bacot away from the board when playing offence. Both Flip and Lively are reputed to be decent outside shooters so maybe some 5 out? This is also where Young can be valuable. He is big enough so that he can make a player like Bacot work some to get position.

I have high hopes for Filipowski. Once he makes the adjustment to the speed and size of college ball, his unusual talents will really shine. If anything I think we have been downplaying him since we saw those very short scrimmage videos.

The way I look at it is, how would Lively and Flip match up with Banchero and Williams. Granted these guys may improve a lot during their one season here. I do think Young/Mitchell is better than Theo/Bates Jones, but it's still a mismatch. Obv. they would never play each other but that is a final four frontcourt we had last year. I think we need to give Mitchell and Young 15 minutes each, at least.

That OP opinion piece was written like something I’d read in a middle school newspaper.

I think Flip will be here a couple years. Famous last words I know. He has some skills that will become very valuable for us in time but I do think it’ll take him a bit to get there. I think the comparisons to Josh McRoberts are accurate, Josh had a lot less to work with his sophomore year though. We should be patient with Flip and i think having Young here is going to do wonders for his development.

If he is a legit 6-10, 6-11 that will make a big difference to the NBA.

We'll see. I certainly don't trust anything we saw on the edited scrimmages, but I do think he may struggle a bit defensively. Still, I think he will be good and likely one and done.

I think that I agree with you on him staying a couple of years. It's a plausible explanation for the about face on the Estrella recruitment (Flip told the staff his plans theory) and I believe I read somewhere that he stated that it was his intention to play in college for more than one year. I don't know if his NBA stock will rise after a year, but I do believe that a year in the weight room and playing at the collegiate level would make a sophomore Flip very valuable for Duke.

Lively with a reputation as a decent outside shooter? That's funny! Bombs away big fella.

Josh was ready as a freshman playing with the 'Landlord'. Josh's issue was a lack of leadership. If Flip is Josh talent, then you won't hear me say a thing. It's going to be an interesting team.

Just going on the scouting reports that I have read. It can be summarized as very good rim protector, good defender away from the basket and decent outside shooter for a big man. A back to the basket traditional center he is not.
I think of the freshmen he will have the biggest learning curve. We kind of know what to expect from the others. They’ll all (hopefully) get better as the year progresses, but I think we know what they are. Right now with Flip, I have no clue what to expect of him.

To add, I do think a sophomore Flip could be one of the best players in the country. I just think he needs a full year here under his belt.

Flip will just need to be comfortable at the collegiate level. He needs no pressure.

This is why I love the Young pickup. There are enough big bodies DUKE will run up on that will require the help of Young.

I guess it would depend on how outside is defined, decent is generous. As an opponent, I'd give him a wide open 3 every trip down the court, I'd probably give him a wide open 12 footer every time down and take my chances. Very good rim protector is an understatement, that's where he is at his best, he is outstanding in that regard. He can score no doubt and plays above the rim, but his motor is very much in question. Filipowski on the other hand, I agree that if you have him as a sophomore, he may be one of the best players in the country. I'm hoping he goes pro after a year.

Are you a UNC fan 2DD?
Yes, but I mean no harm. I get out of line occasionally when I’m in the bottle but I like to be civil. I like exchanging info & I’m friends with some Duke fans who are pretty plugged in. For example I knew Cassius Stanley was OAD no matter what any Duke fan wants to believe, one of my Iron Duke buddies gave me the tip. For the record, I don’t know Gary but I’m a fan of his posts more than most on our board.

Are you really gary-7? OFC

Skysdad, I don't think that he is guru gary. However, the guru has several aliases. By the way, I take issue with letting Lively open for open 12 footers every time as a strategy. In my opinion, that would be a mistake with any collegiate player at any level.

He could be guru gary-7 though. The guru has been every where and knows every thing. He very well could be a poster here. 2DD is a fan of the guru and the guru is definately a fan of himself. Will have to follow 2DD and see if he gives himself away. 😊 OFC

Nah, Gary is much more abrasive than I am.

Don't be so modest 2DD. The guru can be deceptive, convincing and adaptable and like 9dukejames says has many aliases. But with that sooner or later analias is exposed. I see you joined here in 2015. That's about the time the old guru got really rolling. OFC

It would certainly be refreshing if Kyle sees himself as a two year guy, and a nice change from some our guys NBA or bust attitudes of late. Of course, he could blow up and go anyway.

Agree but the Guru has a fatal flaw which trips him up, the need for adulation. It was laughably obvious that he created at least one of those aliases to serve as his personal cheering section.

Before I was sent to outer darkness and tombstoned by the thr mods L actually followed the guru. Very entertaining and was still able to follow him here on dj's thread about the favorite thr threads and pist. Of course eventually just about every DI posters were banned and that thread is no more. I do have a source to thr but have made a choice of not asking him to lurk there anymore. It's just not exciting anymore but I do miss the ever entertaining insight of the one and only guru gary -7 . guru when you read this don't let the attention go to your head. You are a baffoon and your avatar is a selfie . 😂 OFC

Interesting that both here and DBR are wondering whether we get a year two out of Flip today. He does seem like a possible candidate. Hurt and Mark Williams and Moore did return, but they were not top 10 guys. Hurt was close, one ranking had him at 9 if I remember. Williams and Moore were more in the 20-30 range.

It’s going to depend how Flips season goes. No one knows for sure and even if they say they do a lot can change between now and March. I’d lean more towards him going then staying at this moment but it all depends on his season and where he sees himself .

Cassius wasn't a surprise. He was 20.

The article from the OP is a bit premature because Kyle could be the best player in college basketball if he stays a few years, not gonna happen this year. Not sure he will start for us, but that's mainly because I love what Mitchell brings to the table

Mitchell isn’t starting over Flip. If Scheyer want to mix it up. You bring young and Mitchell off the bench together and have teams defending two different styles of play .

I agree, but his decision was maybe not a surprise, but a disappointment, to many who were hopeful he would return.
He was never returning. Like stated, he was 20 and never really showed true pg skills and was small for a combo .
