Duke Wants 2016 5-Star PG Derryck Thornton Next Season

Interesting article I read on Derryck Thornton possibly reclassifying to the 2015 Class. I have some thoughts on this: 1) Duke wanting him to move up a class must say how Coach K feels on Tyus going to the NBA. 2) This could be huge with Derryck coming next year and then being able to have Dennis Smith come in 2016 if Thornton is good enough to be a one and done. Think about having Tyus, Thornton, and Dennis Smith in three consecutive years running the point. 3) How easy is it to reclassify? I feel like players can just choose to move up a class nowadays. When I was in high school I never heard of students graduating a year early. I guess this is an athlete thing. I see Thon Maker is moving up and now Thornton might as well.

Derryck Thornton

I would say that thought #1 is the biggest for me. If he does reclassify and come to Duke, I would think that means the staff is convinced that Tyus is gone.

I could mean we just want to play 2 PGs like this year, and even have him another year if Smith comes or not, but I think if it happens it would say more about Tyus.

I honestly don't want him next season. Tyus or not, I want this kid with the '16 guys. I don't think Thornton makes a big impact on the ending to our season next year. But in '16 with presumably who is coming, Thornton (much like Tyus this season) brings all of that together. I think a year where Grayson and Luke and maybe a grad transfer handles next year's squad makes them better player for the coming storm. I'm telling, I've been excited for the '16 class since 2013 and for good reason. This is not hyperbole.

I say wait a year and let Derryck have the Jordan Brand and McDonald's games. Be a kid. Go to prom and all of that. 2016 is his year.

If Thornton does not reclassify do not be surprised when Luke Kennard holds down the PG for one season.

Reminds me of when Dawkins and Murphy moved up a class. Didn't work well...

If K wants him next year, and if Thornton is willing to reclassify & come to Duke in '15...then I want him too.

As far as reclassifying, you have to understand that their not really moving up they are moving back to the class they were originally supposed to be in. It is highly commom for players these days to he held back a year or to lose a year due to transferriing high schools. This is one reason we see so many 23-25 year old college seniors.

If a player is re-classifying all it means is that he was supposed to be in that class in the first place. A player would not be able to reclassify if they did not have the necessary high school credits which it sounds like Thornton does.

we don't have a true pg next season. We do need him. Duke teams don't do well in march with guys who "can play the point if needed". The only one that did was scheyer but he was different.

Any problems caused by Andre coming a year earlier are from the tragedy involving his sister's death...something he'll never forget, but is learning to cope with. We wouldn't have won our national championship in '10 without his contributions imo. He still had a nice career at Duke.

Don't know what Murphy and Dawkins have to do with this. Murphy was redshirted a year anyways, he would have been a bench player at Duke even if he hadn't reclassified. We all know Dawkins had unfortunate circumstances. There have been successful players who reclassified, Wiggins being one of them.

Again, the 2015 class is what Thornton was a part of in the first place. It's just like any other player who spends exactly 4 years of high school at the same school then enters college. It's no different than us bringing in Tyus Jones.

How so? If Dawkins doesn't reclassify, there's a good chance we don't win the national championship. And with Murphy it would appear that he just was overrated.

Based on the article I read about Thornton reclassifying, it said he only needs one more credit to graduate.

DH, I'm wondering, is he seen as a certainty for one and done? I certainly see your concern if he's working on a group of guys, but if he stays around then they could all end up at Duke regardless of the class.

And, not to mention, it didn't really work well with Scheyer until his senior year. Paulus's flaws and our inability to find a replacement for him was a constant issue between 06-08.

I don't care when we get Thornton, but I sure want him here. Kids got more handles than a five loop roller coaster. And for you guys saying next year is a bad season....LMAO.

He certainly has one and done potential based on how watered down things have become in the draft, but I could see him staying for two. I say let him stay in his class because that is what he wants to do. HE wants to stay.

And no, he is not originally a part of the 2015 class. He just has enough credits to move up with a summer class. One indicator of this if you want one is that if he were a part of the '15 class he wouldn't be eligible for McDonald's based on grade and age. He never classed down.

I love the kid. I just think that if Duke is going to reach max potential next season, they're going to have to do it with great team ball, a la '12-'13 Duke (more than the team/talent dynamic of this season). I just really think Thornton's skills are better suited for the '16 class and I don't want him in next year with a bunch of pressure and feeling like he was perused into coming early. He wants to stay with his class.

Thanks for that information. I didn't know that he wants to stay in that class. If he wants to be there, then I agree with your opinions about letting him stay.

He is a thoughtful ad mature kid. If he truly changes his mind and says "I want to come", obviously we take him with open arms. His talent is top notch. As of today, I want him in '16 with that monster that's on the way.

Couple of things...one I'd much rather have Tyus come back next year. I think he does. I can't see him being one and done if he's projected in the 20-30 range nor do I see him being very productive in the NBA. Two, I'm not a big fan of having three consecutive one and dones at the point. It'd be a nice problem to have but I'd rather have a guy we can develop over three or four years. Just my opinion.

Signals Tyus is seriously considering leaving after the year. Still don't think its a good decision for him (basketball-wise), but not my business, I guess.

I have no doubt he is. I just like to hear more of the background on things like this. I know that you and a few others seem to really have your fingers on the pulse of recruiting and I know you cannot reveal much, but it's nice to receive some context.

Absolutely love Tyus game and I'm all for guys getting paid but I think he needs to stay. PG is the deepest position in the league and he is not a jump off the page athlete. Two comparable guys from last year in Ennis and Shabazz cannot get off the bench. Mudiay, Russel, Grant and the kid from utah all go before him and then you fall into that later half of the 1st round which has become purgatory. Good teams have so few spots and cap space available that the preference is to store you in the D-league.

We might not be a 1 seed, but c'mon man. So many teams would kill to have what we've got, even if they all bolt. Plus, every season with K is priceless at this point.

Not surprising they want to leave as a package just as they came in..... I guess the only thing we can do is when it all this year!!!

Simple enough ;)

I'm hoping next year turns out like 2010 did when we didn't really have a true PG.. buuuut next years team doesn't have 2 senior All-American combo guards to take over the PG duties... or a Jr. Kyle Singler that can do pretty much anything the team needs.

Tyus may very well be gone after this year but Duke wanting this kid doesn't mean it's a given. Anything wrong with having two true PG's on a team these days? That should be a must imo.

If he wants to come for 2015, then I would love it, because we really, really could use it. There is no dancing around it, PG is a need.

I think there's a good chance Okafor, Tyus, and Justise will all go early after this season, especially if we make a deep run. If that happens, and we dont get Thornton or another PG, we lose 4 starters, and it could be a tough year:

PG: Allen? -Kinnard?
SG: Jones
SF: Kinnard
PF: Jefferson/Jeter
C: Obi/Jeter/Plumlee

As I stated earlier, don't be surprised to see 6' 6" Luke Kennard holding down PG for one season.

More like this IMO:

PG Kennard
SG Allen
SF Jones
PF Jefferson
C Obi, Jeter, Plumlee

DT will be 18 in may and 19 when he finishes at findlay...he may have reclassified at some point for basketball reasons???...if he only needs one class...what is he going to do all of next year playing for findlay prep???...he might as well come on to college....findlay preps is only the basketball players right?...so he isn't missing out on prom or anything like that...when kids choose these basketball routes, they miss out on traditional high school anyway, so findlay prep and one class or getting a year of college and the coach 1k????....also the keys to the bentley

Yeah we won't be a 1 seed, but unless someone stays and we pick up a recruit or transfer it could be similar to the season where we lost to VCU in the tournament. I know we are spoiled as Duke fans because I see the season Wojo is having in my backyard at Marquette, but it's not easy thinking about the team we will have next year if everyone bolts.

While Ingram is good, no doubt, he is not a total answer to Duke's needs for next year. He will need to get a whole lot stronger to compete in the tough ACC. OFC
