Duke v. UVA Football

I don't guess this was the biggest game after all. OFC

I quit watching our game and started watching VT game. The both got too conservative depending on the field goal

I didn't see it of course but I heard the heels really got shafted bybthe officials again. If not poor officiating they would be undefeated and probably ranked in the top five in the country. I'm surprised that an investigation has not been started. It's the same thing like their basketball games. Always getting the short end of poor officiating. OFC

so i wanted to get a nights sleep in before i weighed in. i think we are in trouble as a program. we dont seem to have the capability to adjust our play calling during games or the desire to do so. that is on Cut and has been an ongoing issue. the last few years it was the bubble screen again and again and again. now it is the wr sweep to calhoun. after a few games other teams catch on to our tendencies and we dont adjust. we only run our backs up the middle. not one rb averaged over 4 yds per carry. only the qb did. everybody knows what is coming. the announcers yesterday called several plays before they happened by looking at our offensive allignment. other teams defensive coordinators and players have been saying we have an easy offense to defend. we cant beat most teams on a talent level. we must scheme better and then the players must execute better.
i am just frustrated that ONCE again we laid an egg in a big game. i am so tired of that.

I feel your pain Surf.

Whole lot of questions about this program going forward.

Heard someone (former college and pro qb) yesterday make and observation about Harris. They noted that when he played against a decent defense he struggled mightily. Said staff needed to have a serious conversation with him about this issue.

What is our qb situation for next season? The most important position on the team and I don’t see anyone in the program currently prepared to step into that position.

Have a lot of other questions but that is enough for now.

I'm not as negative as you guys. I am proud of our coach and our players who seem to be good guys and trying their best.

I feel like our recruiting hasn't improved at all and if anything is not as good as it was 3-5 years ago. Mostly 3 star players and there's only so much that Coach Cut can coach them up.

There is better coaching now in the ACC than 5 years ago (UNX for example) and Duke is finding it hard to compete on a regular basis.

Our offensive line is routinely not strong or athletic enough to support a running game which throws off the entire offense. I don't know if the play calling is good or bad--I just see an overwhelmed offensive line. Trick plays will only go so far when the defense blows everything up.

Remember Daniel Jones was a diamond in the rough, not a highly recruited player. We have not gotten a highly rated quarterback and I can't guess why, other than QBs want to play in front of 70-100,000 people, not 15,000.

I think Duke football has peaked and if this is the best we can do, it's a lot better than 10 years ago but is disappointing to those of us who care deeply about the program. I suspect we are not in the majority of Duke fans who really only care about basketball.

We are not physical enough in the defensive backfield. It's all we can do to get someone on the ground

At 75 years old, I am old enough to remember when Duke was really good. I really think academics will always keep Duke from being like that again. I know , I know, ND, Stanford , and some other schools are able to do it, but, as much as I would like to see it happen, I doubt it ever does again. That does not mean that I won't still pull for them, it just means that I don't expect them to be in the FCS.

Deja vue all over again, except worse. Just like last year's UVA game, we had no answer for their offense and were overpowered and out-schemed by UVA's defense. Seems like they had our game plan before the start of the game. Our offensive line was manhandled, and our defensive line was pushed around. This one hurts in so many different ways.

You are absolutely right. Duke has a tough job specific to football recruiting. The two schools you mention are definitely two of the closest comps, but they have some big advantages Duke does not. ND is a national brand in football, and can recruit nationally as a result. Stanford has a significantly more fertile recruiting area in their home state than Duke does, and they are also more of a national football brand than Duke.

Looked like a team not playing for 1st place, and an especially lack of preparation offensively. Cut's now 0-10 vs Pitt/UVA last five years. No way you slice it, thats embarrassing and there are no excuses for it.

so bronco in his post game interview was saying that since they lost Hall the weekend before that they really simplified their d for this game. that is really not good to hear because they beat the hell out of our offense. i think this is one of cuts biggest issues. he settles down on our play book and really never adjusts or tweaks it. to many of our opponents say that we are easy to defend because we never change our patterns. the level of acc football is rising and i hope that Cut can adapt. i respect him for bringing us back to descent but can we go farther with him at the helm?
conference records under Cut last 10 years
2009 3-5
2010 1-7
2011 1-7
2012 3-5
2013 6-2
2014 5-3
2015 4-4
2016 1-7
2017 3-5
2018 3-5
2019 2-2 so far
like i said, we need to get better. 2 winning and 1 .500 season in 10 years. we are so much better with Cut but will we ever compete for a conference title again?

Cut announced today that duke has hired jim collins as a football analyst. interesting to me. just a day after he publicly states we dont have a schematic issue he hires a specialist.

Well, if he hired Collins to vet Duke's offensive scheme, I am all for it. Remember, Duke does not have an experienced OC, just a former special teams coordinator. I don't know anything about Collins' background, but I am encouraged that Cut is seeking help. Obviously, the current OC is not really adding anything of substance.

Collins has always been involved on the defensive side of the ball, primarily working with linebackers. I would be greatly surprised if his role would be of any benefit to our offense.

Surf's right as usual- I heard Cut say in post game Saturday, "no schematic issues" were the cause of the 34 point loss. He referenced poor "blocking and tackling," basically blaming the players. OFC

Boy Cut likes to stay with people he knows well, doesn't he? Well this hiring can't hurt.

I guess it would have been to much to ask that a certain "Head Ball Coach" would be available for the position of "football analyst".

the thing i am curious and interested in is Cuts comment ''perfect fit into our system as we expand our staff'' in his introduction speech. maybe more to come? i thought he was pathetic (sorry, my opinion) for quitting in mid season at south carolina but Spurrier coming back as an offensive analyst kinda makes sense with his grandson being on the team as a walk-on. would definitely liven up our playbook i would think.

Open Letter To Cut:
Dear Coach:
It seems like only a natural thing for the "ol ball coach" to make a return to the Methodist Flats with two grandsons at Duke, including qb Gavin, a walk-on.Steve Spurrier truly believes in the value of a Duke education and always thanks the Blue Devils for giving him his start in coaching.Hes got roots at Duke!

I am sorry, I just dont think an ex-linebackers coach ( this Collins guy) as an analyst is going to make much difference for Duke. Hes a defensive guy, and we've needed more diversification on OFFENSE for years, no secret.

Coach its time to swallow your pride and go after Spurrier as your OC. If you want to beat the UVA's,Pitt's (0-10 last five years) and get back in the thick of the COASTAL, at least reach out for the most dynamic and cerebral OFFENSIVE mind PERHAPS EVER in football- Steve Spurrier!!!!

Passionate Duke FB FAN For 55 Years!
