5 Point Play reacts to the loss

Shocking that playing more guys will make your team less tired. I will listen to the podcast this weekend. Wr all thought there was no way Evans would not play, and yet here we are. I imagine that changes. Jon is taking some hits on social media for that second half.

I could understand if Kon was having great game but hard to hit shots tired. Kentucky played 10 players. I think talent wise Duke at least 10 points better. Hope to play them again. For his 3rd game at Duke Cooper was awesome and only going to get better

Yes, however we lost Sion to an illegal screen with 13 min to go. Khaman goes out with cramps. That’s two guys and I think it’s tough to insert Isaiah or Darren at that juncture after sitting. You could argue that both could have gotten in the first half but where? Certainly not when we were cooking them. And when we were down by a bucket or two maybe. The shooting wasn’t bad in the first half it was horrible in the second.

Evans should be in the rotation. I heard all week that Kentucky's plan was to throw a lot of bodies at us and wear us down. He played 8, and they did. Next play I guess. Our late game execution has become sadly predictable. Plenty of stuff to work on, but it is frustrating to see the same mistakes over and over. Maybe we work it out. Beat Arizona and we are back in track.

I think Evans needs to be part of the gameplan going forward for sure.

RR has been giddy ever since. Not even noticing the obvious flaws in their team. Of course their cuppity cupcake preseason schedule will have them on top until conference starts. Then they will take some losses.

RR should be giddy. They’ve had years of misery and with a new coach who’s very good they have a reason for legit optimism. But I don’t care about UK, I care about us. We took a loss in a game where we were clearly better and everyone has pointed out legit reasons. Good news it’s game 3, and we can look at certain areas we need to clean up, whether that be personnel, scheming some things through the post, end of game sets etc. I’m confident in the staff’s ability to figure this out and I’m confident there won’t be many games we go 4-23 from deep.

I originally said I liked Foster and Sion starting, but unless Foster makes a big jump I like Proctor and Sion, with Foster playing good minutes off the bench. Foster may still figure it out, but he looks a little lost at the moment. He did miss a lot of time last year.

Great listen while trying to stay awake at work.

Really liked the perspective that P Cong took on the ISO stuff that Scheyer is getting blasted for at the end of the game. Didn't even realize how effective all the ISO's were throughout the game for Coop and how easy he was getting to his spots. Carr went ISO near the end and is a small part as to Pope is being hailed for his brilliant coaching. One worked, the other didn't. You could still argue we could have ran some movement before getting Coop the ball but yeah.

Pope did call a nice game, he truly deserves some credit there. I really liked how he used that Garrison kid and Oweh is a stud. But it is interesting how much things are getting blown out of proportion as he had some questionable moments as well. Full court baseball pass up 2 with 5 seconds left to a high 60% FT shooter (even if it is somewhat unexpected, is it really worth the risk?). Brea was absolutely getting lit up and they did literally no in-game adjustments. 8 points over a roughly 8 min span in the 1st half. 5 points in roughly 5 min to start the 2nd half. They really just took off after the injury/cramping.

I think the point is the entire building knew we were going to run Cooper iso the last minute.
No doubt and that is a fair point. But on the flipside....I really don't know what else you run unless it's a set play that eventually goes to Coop anyways? Kon is 5/20, Foster having a bad game, I don't even know where Tyrese was on the floor in the 2nd half. Imagine Foster trying to run some type of set play and Cooper is denied the ball and him not touching it for the last shot(s). Khaman still has that fracture in his hand and can't create.

I get that you want the ball in your best players hands. Duke just seems to get in funks when they go ISO, or heavily dependent on a player. And it's awfully ironic that when we lose games like this, we don't have many assists.

I for one hope we see more balance going forward.

Definitely in the camp of having the ball in your best player's hands for the final shot/possession. Can't disagree though that the offense can just stand around when that happens and I think when you couple that with fatigue, it doesn't end well.

My point was moreso on the last two plays vice the entire 2nd half. A Cooper ISO on Carr I can live with all day everyday and I realize I'm in the minority, but here's why. He was absolutely destroying Carr the entire game. Go back and watch the highlights. Even though the whole world knew that Coop was going to get the ball, I was shocked Pope stuck Carr on Cooper and was content allowing it to play out...that's just odd...I guess Pope was banking on Coop losing the ball for his 2nd TO of the game or whatever number it was? Did he really plan for Oweh to provide help defense off of an eliter shooter (Kon) if he went mid, even though Coop already lost the ball before he came over? Nah, I'm not buying it. That was just one of those scenarios where we were consistently winning that matchup, UK coaching staff didn't adjust for it, and we came away unfortunate. His very last ISO I think Duke had NO reason to come provide a screen for Coop...he could have just took it right on Carr.

I get it, i'm overanalyzing it but i think Jon is getting an unfair shake for the last two possessions. BBN and most of CBB can't see it, but Carr is a below average defender. If you wanna ping him for not calling a TO when Kon hit the floor the last few minutes, good with that. If you have a 90% success rate in something....you keep that s**t going.

I don't have an issue with Cooper having the ball the last few possessions or so. The vibe I got though the last several minutes were it's Cooper working really hard to make something happen, or bust. Duke didn't lose the game because of the last couple of possessions either, imo. We lost because we went stagnant, only scoring 26 points in the 2nd half. So when that happens, coupled with the heavy minutes by several of the starters, two who went 7-30, that's where 2nd guessing comes in.
All of this while two solid scoring options never got off the bench.

Got some good points Friction biggest complaint for me was not getting Evans and Harris in. He will probably play them 15 minutes in the Wafford game to make up for it. A loss is OK but don't coach different against better competition. Like coaching not to lose

Good job with the podcast but I disagree with a few things. One the "if we hit a few more shots we would have won." If Kentucky hit a few more shots they would have won by more. I also don't get feeling that we will improve and they won't. They had a new coach with an entirely new team. They could improve as much as us.
Anyway good job guys! Long season and plenty of upside for our team. Tough stretch coming up though. Trial by fire. If we go 1-3 in that stretch that could hurt our seeding so getting 2 wins is important.

I’ve got to say that the reason for the ,” won’t improve !” Is because there is a lot of footage on the Kentucky players . Sure they can come together as a team more but Duke does have the higher ceiling . It’s three games in and Duke is still figuring a lot out with their freshman and lineups . Early on it favored Kentucky but play the game ten times and I would wager the outcome is in Duke’s favor .

With limited hindsight, I’m not sure Arizona is better than Kentucky.

It’ll be another tough game though, Love will play his a$$ off.
