I've been binge watching the title games today after seeing the "I Hate Christian Laettner" 30 for 30. 1991 then 1992 and just am finishing up 2001 when I noticed this play.

Duke is up 5, with under 2 to play and the ball. Jay Will bringing the ball up, takes a ball screen top of the key pulls up and drains it to give Duke the 8 point lead and all but seal the win.

Sound familiar? Wait until you see it. It's almost eerie!

Go to the 1:11:0 mark of the video of the 2001 game.

There isn't time marked on the March Madness website, but 1:50 in the game.

Thought you all may enjoy the little connection of two greats with two great shots leading to two of five (!) great titles.

I don't even have to watch it to know which shot you're talking about. That was one of my favorite shots in Duke history and when Tyus hit it I was screaming "Just like Jason, just like Jason!" Excellent observation!

You don't "have to" but damn is it fun to. Watched that entire 2001 game and what a freaking talented group that was in 2001. Averaged shooting 30 threes that tourney going into that game!?!?!? That team had a lot of freedom to let it fly, but deservingly so as there were just studs at all 5 positions and off the bench.

That let it fly mentality is what made that team so great. People always say Duke started shooting when they lost Boozer. They were shooting like that before he went down. It's just that teams in the end of that tourney didn't have him high on their scouting reports. What a great team.

Just watched the end of the 2001 game, and wow what an uneventful final minute! I think Arizona got maybe one shot off. But man, I loved Duhon. That was an amazing team.

I was in Cameron for that 2001 game. Place went bananas on that Jay Will strike. I got hammered at the Down under that night. I was 18. Good times.

They showed a live shot of Cameron at least one time during the broadcast. I was watching it last night and thought, I bet there was a member or two of the Duke Forum in that crowd. ha and you confirmed my suspicions.

I was a Jr. in high school watching at home, as my dad was one of the "suits" at the game schmoozing rather than cheering. But he was cheering some for Duke as he had me fill out his office pool bracket, and obviously I picked Duke for him...also obviously he ended up winning it. I did at least get to "get out of" school the day of the Final Four open practice at the Metrodome though.

I remember that shot like it was yesterday. Definitely appreciate you posting. That team was so special and so clutch. It's funny in the championship game to me 5 points in the last 3 min feels like a mountain of a lead just because its 2 possessions. In the regular season it feels like nothing. I might be alone in that thinking, but i just kept saying Monday night, just get it to a 2 possession game and we're good, just get it to a two possession game b/c we're shooting 2 the rest of the way and we can burn as much clock as possible.

While you're talking about comparisons....you might as well mention the fact the Dunleavy had three straight 3 pointers for 9 points. Much like Grayson Allen had his stretch of 8 points. Both were in critical points of the game.

Yeah, I thought that same thing. Packer and Nantz were saying almost the same things as Raff/Hill/Nantz were saying about Allen this year. "Big performance today from Dunleavy, but he's shown flashes all year, had 23 vs. ...blah blah"

Another likeness, best player struggled with foul trouble all game and was off all game, but hit big shot(s) down the stretch. Jah and JWill. Jah had the big and 1 and dunk after the Winslow tippy toes pass.

Another likeness, a big man mismatch on the other team that we couldn't match up with well and the other team likely should have taken more of an advantage of. Loren Woods was killing us, Packer said repeatedly they need to pound it inside to him more, just like Raff/Hill/EVERYONE said of Kaminsky needing the ball more/be more aggressive.

Fans hating the foul calls favoring Duke. Minneapolis crowd booing like crazy most of the game on every call for Duke, announcers mentioning it like this year.

There are probably even more...

Tyus's three (actually two late threes) will be added to the list of great Duke threes, like Jay Williams, the Dunleavy explosion on 2001, Bobby Hurley's in 1991 to cut UNLV's lead to 2, Nolan Smith banging one against Baylor then slapping hands with K during live action, JJ's second half against NC St. in the 03 ACC Championship, Scheyer against GT in the 10 ACC Championship, and on and on.

Austin Rivers beating the Holes, Tyler Thornton in Maui and Dockery beating the Hokies, just to round that out.

The ones Jay Williams hit done the stretch to create the "Miracle Minute" in 01. I remember Dan Ewing had a big one in Cameron to beat Maryland his junior year. Of course Capel's bomb against the Heels in 95 (though Duke lost that game).

I had a flashback comparison as well though its maybe a bit more of a reach. I'd compare the 3 Grayson hit when we were down 9 to the 3 Hurley hit vs UNLV when we were down 5 in 1991. Little different circumstances but both were ballsy shots that kept us alive when things were looking bleak.
