Official game day thread- THE final four- Duke vs Houston

One of the reasons the ACC is down is because my understanding is lack of NIL money at least compared to the SEC.
As a football- centric conference, the SEC is awash in NIL funds. The SEC donors also want to compete in the NCAAT. The ACC has not reached that the breadth and depth of the SEC's level, except in a few cases- such as Duke's NIL payments to Cooper Flagg.

The SEC has perfected the model, because they were doing it anyway, before the NIL and direct payments to players became popular.

The SEC network helps as well. Players and families want to be on tv every game. Even before nil the Sec was emerging past the Acc when they got their own network. The Accn is not available in a lot of areas from my understanding
Great breakdown -

Looks like the SEC leads...I do recall Ohio St football's roster had $20M in NIL last year....

Off-season thoughts

Never know what players are thinking, but I do think Coach Scheyer is wanting to construct his teams moving forward the same way he constructed the 2024-2025 team. Efficient Defensive and Efficient Offensive Teams, with some veteran program players, talented freshmen, with 1-2 transfers, all the players being unselfish.

This is my hope for next season’s team:

PG - Foster
SG - Proctor (plays best off the ball)
SF - Evans
PF - Cameron Boozer
C - Ngongba

Bench:

Brown - PF/C
Harris - SG
Khamenia - SF/PF
Cayden Boozer - PG/SG
Henderson - SF/PF
Shot Blocker/Lob Threat (from transfer portal) - C

Postmortem/aftermath of the season

I wanted to open up a thread for any venting, frustrations, commiserating, etc. about the way Duke's season ended.

Any questions you want to fire off, any additional analysis you need, any regrets ... yall have the floor.

I'll chime in over the next few days with notes and thoughts. For now, I've got one:

U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio announced yesterday afternoon that the U.S. is revoking all visas held by South Sudanese people -- which includes Khaman Maluach. Here's the link to the AP story.

Maluach was the worst player on the court last night, minus-20 in 21 minutes, 0 rebounds, minimal defensive impact. I'm not saying the situation is completely to blame for his play; if he played well and Duke won, we'd be talking about how great it was that he was able to shove aside the outside noise. But I've gotta think his mind was at least somewhat divided last night.

2024-2025 Duke Blue Devils

I think the turning point was when Gillis got the tech. That ended up being a 6 point trip for them which gave them life.

On another note and don't know if this is accurate but I saw on Twitter that Maliq was a +10, Foster+10 and Pat +7 and Mal -20. If true, I just don't get why we went away from them in the second half? At least give our guys a minute before a possible TV timeout for them to catch a break. With it, they probably would get close to 5 minutes rest.

Blue and Hart,

Solid points the two of you bring up and I wholeheartedly agree with them. Duke’s bread and butter all season and what we praised Coach Scheyer for this season was the construction and distribution of minutes. Coach Scheyer had 10 capable players and in the 1st half last night he used them. For some reason he went away from that in the 2nd half playing only 7 players and thus the starters were exhausted in crunch time. Maluach, Proctor, and Gillis didn’t have it last night, I wish Scheyer would have used the depth he had on the bench like he had been all season prior to last night.

The defensive rebounding and 3 point defense was poor on Duke’s part, credit to Houston for taking advantage of Duke’s lack of attention to detail. Hart is spot on, if Duke doesn’t allow Houston to make 3 straight 3 pointers to close the 1st half then Duke has a 15 point lead at halftime.

I read we were 1-4 in games decided in the last min...the win being the lane violation vs the Cheats....if thats true i think we have found where we need a lot more work....
That is all on Jon. You just can't roll the ball out of timeouts and just have your best player go one on one. It happened earlier in the season and Jon did the same thing last night. I counted 3 times in the last few minutes where we came out of timeouts and twice it was a one on one with Coop and the other was a one on one with Kon where he got his shot blocked.

And that sums up my feel song on Tatum. Not a fan. Never have been. Feels so disrespectful when people name the greatest Duke players and he’s on the list
Tatum is a Duke lifer however. He has a presence in Durham in the off season, he gifted the women's hoops team shoes this March. He even was behind the scenes recruiting Coop, and during the season telling him to treasure these moments. I think for the one and dones he's been great. That being said, if we didn't need one and dones and had a roster full of 2-3 year players, I would be ecstatic. Florida nor Houston will be playing any prized frosh tomorrow.

Make our late free throws and inbound the ball and we are playing Monday. If you can't win the last 2 minutes it doesn't matter what you did before that, unless you are up 20.

This is from a guy who built his program while in the gritty American Athletic Conference. Isn’t it their first year in the Big 12?
At some point this week, someone may have been christophero, called him a crybaby and I thought that’s a little harsh. After watching him on the Sideline and post game Spot On.
I don't remember saying this, but thanks for the shout out.

He had great looks last night that didn't go down early, and I think that got in his head. I love the kid and hope he comes back. The kid was a warrior in the program for 3 years. Nothing will ever change that. Plus, 3 ACC titles, a winning record against the cheats, two elite eights, and a final four is pretty damn good.
